Japan NHK report: Clear photos of China building artificial islands in SCS

impressive pictures indeed. but all of this does not alter the status quo. you just build structures on your reefs.
don´t complain when we begin to build on ours. note, we possess the largest holding of islands and reefs, the potential of building is huge.

Potential is huge, but you should first have the ability to develop......Actually we're building the islands with money filling in them like sand. What's more, what if you finish your building? Do you have enough combat aircraft or warships? Or just for the convenience of US?

I'm curious about how they may make use of those islands if they finish the building.

What these structure and artificial islands will be useful for:

If China decides to drill near the area, then the drilling rigs will need to be guarded by a big fleet of CCG and CMS ships (as shown in the skirmishes during the previous SCS drilling). This Spratly area is very far from Hainan but the CCG fleet will now have the option to resupply at these nearby artifical Islands.

Chinese "Diego Garcia" islands.

Chinese "Diego Garcia" island.

Disagree. If it is for military purposes, then for which enemy? VietNam and the Philippines? China already has enough firepower to deal with VN and PH without the need for these structures.

Is it for against the US? Doesn't make sense. Any military installation on these structures will be more of a burden than an asset. They will need to be supplied from the mainland and be protected from the US 7th fleet (+ allies), a difficult task. Doable perhaps, but a very difficult task. Imagine that long supply line and the need to secure that line. It might become more of a burden than an asset.

Diego Garcia is in the middle of nowhere, with potential enemies much further away than what these structures would need to face if an armed conflict breaks out. They cannot be compared to Diego Garcia.

It is much more useful to be used as a resupply base for the CCG fleet if China decides to drill there.

If u don't like Diego Garcia ... Okay, it's more like Guam island =).

1. SCS islands far aways from China including HaiNan island, YES ! China lack effective air-defense capacity to protect our interests ... Hence ↓
2. Build the long runway & hangars on artificial islands to deploy PLAAF fighters, to protect ships in SCS.
3. Build the deep seaport on artificial islands to deck PLAN FFGs even C.V & Nuclear-subs, to protect ships in SCS.
4. Set HQ-xx anti-aircraft missiles to provide air-defense capacity, to protect ships in SCS.
5. Yes, a resupply base for ships in SCS.
6. Those artificial islands much better & useful for China than deploying a C.V group in SCS, they will be "Super Aircraft Carrier" ... can do much more things in future.

Why not the Maldive of China?

Difference is that Maldive is making money..
Guam/Hawaii is making money and costing money
Diego Garcia is only costing money..
It is not wise to spend so much money in SCS without profit..

OKay, Whatever Maldive/Guam/Diego Garcia/Hawaii etc ... Once Chinese start to work, they can be anything.:D

Right, under protection of China..

Another Caribbean should be the common goal of SCS surrounding countries.
We all know Caribbean had a violent history and now the target of global tourists.

@cirr
Thank you for this picture. There are not many pics of Eldad or Anda.

All these six storey buildings are very similar. This "standardization" will save money, gain some economy of scale. The learning gained from one could be applied to others. This will speed up the buildings too.Expand on what works and discard those that don't work.

This is a very smart strategy!

Also, if I may add, the original outposts in some of these islands are also very similar. I have difficulty telling them apart.

Oh OK brother, now I understand. Thank you.

- Nuclear subs has such a short endurance, they can't reach Hainan and must resupply from these islands. Got it.

- These artificial islands act as a "Super aircraft carrier". And they are there to protect ships in the SCS. I couldn't figure out this before because I always thought escort ships are used to protect the aircraft carrier and not the other way around. But I was wrong. Now I know that the US aircraft carriers are used to escort the Aegis destroyers, nuke subs, etc.

- Or were you saying these super aircraft carriers are needed to protect civilian ships? Makes sense too. We all know the US constantly go around sinking civilians ship. Not to mention all the small-fry pirates in their little fishing boats, a super aircraft carrier is needed to defeat them.

Now I understand. Thank you.

Why not the Maldive of China?

I never knew the US occupies the Maldives and has a military base there. Now I know. Thank you.

Both of you brothers have too much knowledge for me, I'm overwhelmed and must leave now. Hans and cnleio, thanks for enlightening me.

A big island in the Sea can do much more things than a "Super Aircraft Carrier", much more low cost than the fleet and it's unsink ! U r right, after building artificial islands China might send our oil rigs to dig oil under these islands protection.
