PLAAF stages 'Red Flag' exercise in northwest China

China's People's Liberation Army Air Force has for the first time in its history released news regarding aerial training exercises after combat drills were staged over China's arid northwest, Hong Kong's South China Morning Post reports.

About 100 elite pilots from 14 different brigades took part in the exercises using nearly 100 different types of aircraft. The drill was apparently modeled on the United States Air Force's aerial war games, or "Red Flag" exercises. To train Nato, US and other and other allied nations to fight in real combat situations, the US Air Force's 414th Combat Training Squadron holds the two week-long exercise every year either at Nellis Air Force bBase, Nevada or Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska. During the drills, F-16 and F-15 fighters from the 64th and 65th Aggressor Squadrons serve as the adversary "Red Forces" against US and allied units.

StrategyPage, a US-based website which reports on military affairs, stated three "Blue Force" regiments were established by the PLA Air Force which play a very similar role to the "Red Forces" in American exercises. Equipped with advanced fighters such as FC-1, J-10 and Su-27, Blue Forces flew missions against the regular PLA Air Force units during the exercise. These kinds of drills not only pilots to gain combat experience, but also to give tacticians and strategists new insights into the future of air warfare.

Since the establishment of modern China, the development of an advanced air force has been long ignored by PLA leaders. During the Cultural Revolution air force personnel were purged under the order of Mao Zedong because they were considered a tool of the bourgeoisies.

After learning that 80% of aircraft lost in the war were shot down by just 20% of the enemy pilots, Chinese leaders began focusing attentions on how to increase the survivability of the their air forces in the event of a war against the United States and Taiwan. For this reason, the Blue Force regiments were established. Pilots who excel during these forerunner exercises were awarded the "Golden Helmet" the highest honor for a Chinese fighter pilot.

To monitor and refine PLA pilots' flying skills, the air combat maneuvering instrumentation system used by the US Air Force during the Red Flag exercises has been adopted by the PLA Air Force.
