Chinese forces deployed to the hotly contested South China Sea ordered a US Navy reconnaissance aircraft to "leave immediately" six times Friday, but the pilot stayed the course, refusing to back down.

A US Navy P-8A Poseidon reconnaissance plane flew past China's garrisons in the Spratly Islands, giving CNN reporters aboard the aircraft a view of Chinese militarization in the region.

Flying over Chinese strongholds on Mischief Reef, Johnson Reef, Fiery Cross Reef, and Subi Reef, CNN spotted "large radar installations, power plants, and runways sturdy enough to carry large military aircraft." At one outpost, onboard sensors detected 86 vessels, including Chinese Coast Guard ships, which China has been known to use to strong-arm countries with competing claims in the South China Sea.

Lt. Lauren Callen, who led the US Navy crew, said it was "surprising to see airports in the middle of the ocean."

The Chinese stationed in the area were not exactly kind hosts to the uninvited guests.

Warning the aircraft that it was in Chinese territory — an argument an international arbitration tribunal ruled against two years ago — the Chinese military ordered the US Navy plane to "leave immediately and keep out to avoid any misunderstanding."

Six warnings were issued, according to CNN, and the US Navy responded the same every time.

"I am a sovereign immune US naval aircraft conducting lawful military activities beyond the national airspace of any coastal state," the crew replied, adding, "In exercising these rights guaranteed by international law, I am operating with due regard for the rights and duties of all states."

What if Chinese netizens want Beijing to start flying its fleet of reconnaissance planes and drones over Guam, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico on a regular basis? Tit for tat? And will the PLA Navy start patrolling near the Gulf of Mexico?

No need to go there yet. if the airplane violated China's airspace , China has the right to shoot it down.

China is a master of issuing warning. They issued us 3warning everyday for almost 50 days in doklam. When we didn't backtrack, they decided to backtrack. So in this case, if US Navy don't go back, it will be china who will stop issuing warning.

china will never shoot down u.s aircraft because they know they are not capable of defending against u.s massive response which may lead to their embarrasment .china has no trust on reliability of its weapon

Not until the PLA Navy is much bigger and fully moderately modernized by the year 2025/2035. At least then, they will fire warning shots.

It too obvious. china has no problem shooting Vietnamese fishing boats operating around the paracels island. however, when the U.S navy sailed within 12 nm of the paracels, the Chinese completely backed down. the u.s navy sailed within 12nm of the spratly, the Chinese backed down. the u.s flew bombers into the adiz of east china sea, the Chinese backed down. the u.s flew bombers ahead of the Chinese garrison in the spratly, the Chinese backed down. LOL

The moral of the story is that the u.s can bring an armada right to the Chinese coast while the Chinese do not have the capability to do the same to the u.s

Do it.

did they just republished same old story from 2013 again before china placed missiles on those islands?

are they running out of money to do another flyover or too scared?

the US propaganda media in need of something new to write. c'mon, it's that time of the year where we 'muricans go to do parade and gloating on the news of how stronk we are and disappear again

What Chinese netizens want is irrelevant to the Chinese government leadership.

But for the sake of discussion, what you asked for is nothing new. During the Cold War, the Soviets done similar things and nothing happened. When I was active duty and stationed at MacDill AFB in Tampa, we flew training sorties over the Gulf of Mexico on a daily basis. Chinese ships are more than welcome there for us to practice our combat tactics. :enjoy:

Since the airplane did not violate any air space, China has no rights to do anything about it.
China can of course violate international law and shoot it down, in which case the US Navy would probably blockade China, including stopping oil tankers destined to China.

He have said if the USA airplane violate our airspace, don't show how strong USA are, China also not weak. International law, what's it?

Want you want to say ? USA is more military strong
Yes!

So what can you achieve? Nothing
Stop input Iran oil?stop island building?don’t crash down the aircraft?follow your order?

Time is on our side
If you just act like a naughty boy, burn some oil with ship sailing, go on
If you invite military collisions, you will go to Stone Age together with the whole world

Grow up, cow boy
if you want to show off, you can ask Eu&India&ME ,china is not the place
