America is mostly a great place. There are concentrations of ghettos in the big cities and this is where the vast majority of violent crime occurs. If you remove those small congested areas the US is one of the safest countries in the world. It doesn't help that many politicians encourage criminal behavior in certain demographics and make it worse. I think this is done on purpose so those same politicians can then say "see how bad it is, you need to give me more power and money to fix it."

A lot of prisons here are "for profit". They make money by keeping people in jail and every now and then a judge is caught sentencing people to jail and getting bribes of cash in return.
