Focus back on fate of Teesta deal

Bangladesh politicians had mixed reactions to the reelection of Mamata Banerjee as West Bengal chief minister. Bangladesh' most immediate concern with India has to do with the Teesta water sharing agreement, an issue on which Mamata Banerjee has consistently put the interests of her state above bilateral relations. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakrul Iskam Alomgir said: "The people of Bangladesh see Mamata as an obstacle to implementing the Teesta Agreement despite, despite New Delhi's intent to settle the matter."

Others, like JP Secretary General Sheikh Shahidul Islam were happy with the outcome of the Bengal polls: "Mamata is considered a friend of Bangladesh." Left wing leader Pankaj Bhattacharya was measured. In his opinion, Mamata will be different in her second term. She has had to overcome much infighting in her party to win again, and is likely to be cautious in her political relationships: she cannot afford to lose friends or make new enemies in Delhi. " She wants good relations with the Centre, so she is unlikely to oppose the agreement as stridently as she has in the past.", said Bhattacharya.

Meanwhile, the government did not immediately raise the Teesta issue, and kept its remarks limited to congratulating Mamata. Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali has conveyed the heartiest congratulations on the consecutive second victory of the ruling Trinamool Congress in the recently held West Bengal Bidhan Sabha elections, reports UNB.

"This is an apt recognition of your pro-poor and pro-development policies, and your dedication for betterment of the people of West Bengal," he said in a message to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday. As the relationship expands in depth and dimension, the Foreign Minister said, "We're confident that during your upcoming term, we would be able to further strengthen our relations."

Ali, in his message on behalf of the government and people of Bangladesh, said the relations between Bangladesh and India have reached a new height during the tenure of the respective governments in Bangladesh and India. "The strong historical ties; commonalities of language, culture and values; and warmth between the peoples of Bangladesh and West Bengal are important facilitators in this regard," he said. Wishing Mamata a greater success, the Foreign Minister also extended her an invitation to visit Bangladesh at a convenient time.

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina might not make it to the oath-taking ceremony of Mamata Banerjee, who is set to become the chief minister of West Bengal for the second consecutive term, but the former has not forgotten to send her gift to the latter.

Bangladesh has sent a special jamdani sari, 20 kgs of hilsha fish and molasses for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee which will be presented to her by a senior minister at the swearing in ceremony on Friday.

Banerjee will take oath in a star-studded occasion at Red Road in Kolkata.

Her Trinamool Congress (TMC) swept this year’s election by winning 211 of the 294 Assembly seats alone. Hasina is also sending her industries minister Amir Hossain Amu to be present at Banerjee’s oath-taking ceremony, Besides, Bangladesh’s Deputy High Commissioner in Kolkata Zokey Ahad will also be present, the ABP report said.

A gesture to take forward Bangladesh-India relations?

Diplomatic circles believe the gesture of Hasina of sending both Hilsa and an important minister to Kolkata suggests that the Bangladeshi leadership is eyeing friendship between Dhaka and Kolkata, the report added. The deputy high commissioner also hoped that Banerjee would play a positive role in strengthening the bonds between Bangladesh and India, the report said.

Banerjee has been an important player in India-Bangladesh relations

Banerjee is considered an important player in the future growth of India-Bangladesh relation for she is chief minister of the bordering state of West Bengal. In 2011, the Bangladeshi establishment was dissatisfied with the TMC chief after she refused to accompany former prime minister Manmohan Singh during his trip to Dhaka. As a result of the disharmony from the Indian side, the Teesta water-sharing pact between the two countries got stuck.

Howeever, Banerjee made up for the loss in 2015 when she went to Dhaka with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The two sides also went ahead with their historic enclave-swapping pact in August. Diplomatic experts feel by sending the Hilsas, Hasina is reminding Banerjee about the pending water issue.

What will she do with cow? She will again send it back to Hasina.

Btw, she receives hilsha from Bangladesh's deputy high commissioner today.

I am surrised to see her simple house. Shame on our politicians. They can't even think of living in such a simple house.

Esp. Khaleda Zia's residence which was demolished by Hasina's govt.

Esp. Khaleda Zia's residence which is now demolished by Hasina.

In India politicians dont want to show wealth.. this is due to our socialist past.. politicians will keep millions in hidden account but will ride ambassador or maruti.. wear simple cloths.. and pretend to be pro poor...
its only new generation politicians that dont shy away from showing wealth.

I am not a big fan of Mamata...but it is also fact that she is one of the few leaders who is corrupt to the core...Her mindset is still towards living with simple life style which i admire..

However bigoted Mamata is, regarding her lifestyle and wealth she is very simple. She singlehandedly made a party and won elections in WB, which is more than a mere achievement.

Compare her with Vasundara Raje or Jaya or Mayawati. Mamata is lot better and she is not rich. Nor she used state finances to make herself rich.

well, in Indian politics, simple lifestyle means good person, a good person means good leader.. no wonder she cornered a lot of votes from poor people.(besides left ruled for far too long)
Both these conclusion are big logical jumps but you cant operate based on logic in India.. emotion rules.
She had the congress cadre with her btw, it was not build ground up.

you mean is not? nobody knows, I am not saying she is corrupt, I am saying its good politics to be shown to have simple life if you are a politician from east India(poorest part of India).

What remains in store for Bangladesh is yet to be seen, but one thing for sure, situation is not good for West Bengal. The state is lagging behind in many aspects like education, industrial development, GDP, employment opportunity, public facilities etc. Didi, didn't really do much about these things in her last tenure. I have little hopes from this one.

Is this our dpt high commissioner? Why is he wearing his glasses on the forehead? Does he even know how to behave and maintain a state level protocols. Sometimes I wonder where we are heading or what kind of people we are hiring to represent us..

A Deputy High Commissioner posted to Kolkata is not going to be cream of the crop....

But agreed - he seems to show a lack of diplomatic finesse.
