How did the Orthodox church decide on its Christmas day? I had no idea that Russians celebrate Christmas on a different day. Do the holiday season in Russia also not coincide with end of December as it does in western countries?

It is because of Julian calender. The Orthodox church still use it. Russian winter holidays last from January 1st to January 8-10th. We call it New Year holidays not Christmas holidays.
