Feb. 12: It is already known as the world’s biggest defence import deal in a long time. Now, it transpires, it is even bigger than that. The Indian Air Force is in the market to buy 126 Medium Multi-role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) from one of six foreign vendors bidding for the contract.
Over time, however, the IAF plans to buy 260 of them, Deccan Chronicle has learnt. That means, what has been talked about as a $10-12 billion deal will eventually fetch the winner of the contract close to $25 billion.
While the IAF floated a request for proposal (RFP) for only 126 fighters, sources privy to the armed forces’ Long-Term Integrated Perspective Plan said that that document puts the number of medium fighter jets the IAF needs at is 260. Ministry of defence officials, however, refused to confirm that there was any plan beyond the current RFP.
America’s Lockheed Martin (F-16) and Boeing (F/A-18), the 4-nation Eurofighter consortium (Typhoon), France’s Dassault (Rafale), Sweden's SAAB (Gripen) and Russia’s Mikoyan-Gureyvich (MiG-35) are locked in a high-intensity public relations as well as behind-the-scenes war to win the contract.
Air Chief P.V. Naik had on Thursday said that the Contract Negotiations Committee would achieve key milestones towards evaluating the packages offered by the various vendors in a week or two and that the contract would be ready for signing by September, except if "dissatisfied vendors put a spoke in the wheel".
That, sources said, looked almost inevitable given the size of the contract and what it could do to the fortunes of the winner. It could potentially keep alive assembly lines for some fighters from the 1970s/1980s vintage for another 30 years, ensuring that some 25,000 to 30,000 people would find employment in what are currently stricken economies in the US and Europe.
The sources also said that the eventual number of the frontline air superiority Sukhoi-30 MKIs from Russia in the IAF's fleet would also go up to 280.
The IAF would need these higher numbers of combat jets of different classes considering that it has to plan for threats coming from two fronts.

260 MMRCA (I don't see how this is going to happen with Eurofighter or Rafale)
270 MKI
Mig-29, Mirage 2k
200 LCA
AMCA & FGFA

something doesn't seem right here....

Earlier i heard that the deal is set to be bigger but not so big. i heard more 70 might be added up but not such big amount.

now this deal is bigger than complete pakistani foreign exchange reserve

and you left 300 PAK-FA
40 lca MK-1
100 LCA MK-2

Even i heard that number will be increased and maybe given to two vendors but 260 is more than double may be the amt is 216

If IAF plan 260 MRCA means its plan is clear, MMRCA for replacing Jaguars+Mig-27s and will be used as striker aircraft, which does not need fighter escort. Whereas primary air superiority will be done by MKI+FGFA + (LCA+MIg-29+M2k(as an interceptor/support role))

Deadly combination though, along with IN with around 100 jets too

260 then there is a huge chance it will be going to two vendors what do you guys think
may be it is done not to leave the americans

Retiring squadrons by 2022:
5 x MiG-21 M/MF
2 x MiG-21Bis
6 x MiG-21 Bison
3.5 x MiG-27 ML
2 x MiG-27 UPG
Total (retiring 2022): 18.5 squadrons

Current Squadrons (2010) still in place by 2022:
3 x MiG-29UPG
3 x Mirage 2000UPG
6 x Sukhoi-30 MKI
5 x Jaguar IS
1 x Jaguar IM
Total (remaining 2022): 18 squadrons
Note: All listed here, except MKI, will be retiring between 2022 and 2030.

Planned Squadrons in place by 2022:
2 x LCA Mk.1
5 x LCA Mk.2
9 x Sukhoi-30 MKI
7 x MRCA
2 x PAK-FA/FGFA
Total (induction 2022): 25 squadrons

This means in 2022:
Total (remaining + induction): 18 + 25 = 43 squadrons in 2022

From 2022 to 2030, there will be 12 squadrons (3 x MiG-29UPG, 3 x Mirage 2000UPG, 5 x Jaguar IS, 1 x Jaguar IM) being retired (as shown above). The production lines for the LCA, MRCA, and FGFA will be available during that period. AMCA will come online in the later half of this (closer to 2030).

So the expected squadron strength has now increased to 50+.

Even i heard that number will be increased and maybe given to two vendors but 260 is more than double may be the amt is 216

Firstly i believe this news is totally bogus
secondly if we were to buy 260 mmrca ,it would mean that we would be inducting 4th gen fighter till 2030
rather than the expected 2020-22 timeline
Let me say , there is absolutely no need to keep a 4.5 gen fighter line open beyond 2025
coz by then most of the important countries of the world would begin fielding 5th gen fighters

However there is a possibility that IAF might decide to take an option for 64/74 additional mmrca aircraft , while navy too might decide to go for the same aircraft which is being purchased by IAF , for its NMRCA contract which could mean that the winning vendor might end with 240-250 aircraft order

This could actually be a possibility since navy would want to ensure commonality with IAF
And i was also heard that IAF is planning to upgrade only 60 of its 140 Jaguar aircraft instead of the previously expected 120
Hence there is a possibility that these 60 Jaguars could be replaced by mmrca aircraft

Another possibility is that Strategic nuclear command has decided to pick he mmrca winner as its nuclear delivery platform and will order 40 of these aircrafts for itself
Since it his highly likely that India will pick a capable ground attack aircraft for its mmrca contract since the fighter is primarily meant to replace Mig27 in deep strike role
and we will already field over 500 Air Superiority platforms
