Navy Gets First Kolkata-class Destroyer Today, Commissioning Soon

The IN is looking for some commonality in its fitments so it shouldn't come as a surprise if they settle on the RAN sensor across various platforms. Don't worry about the OEM or its affiliations, money is money.
I absolutely agree- the EL/M-2248 MF-STAR and RAN-40L combo were set to be the common main sensors across the larger warships of the IN from 2016/17 onwards- P-15B, P-17A, IAC-1, probably IAC-2 etc etc. I would very much be pleased if yet another vital deal wasn't upset due to this nonsensical blacklisting process the UPA went mad with, it is a concern I have but would love to be proven wrong.

Agreed, the look out of place and an eyesore on that P-17A render.

Not only by looks, but also for the intend to reduce the RCS. As we all know, shaping of the frame / hull is one part, reducing external parts is the other one.

Don't they have the Elta radars already?

Country s most potent indigenous warship joins service this month - SP's Naval Forces
The ship's heart, its primary sensor is the IAI EL/M-2248 MF-STAR AESA multi-function radar, in addition to being fitted with the IAI EL/M-2238 L-band STAR surveillance radar, BEL HUMSA-NG bow sonar, BEL Nagin active towed array sonar, BEL Electronic Modular Command & Control Applications (EMCCA Mk4) combat management system and the Thales LW-08 D-band air search radar.
This doesn't make much sense as the EL/M-2238 STAR and Thales LW-08 are both fulfilling the same role on a warship, from the pictures it is obvious that the P-15As have the LW-08 whilst the Shivlaik class has the EL/M-2238.

Not only by looks, but also for the intend to reduce the RCS. As we all know, shaping of the frame / hull is one part, reducing external parts is the other one.
Indeed, the IN need to look into this, there must be a way to recess the RBUs into the deck and they can be brought up only when needed.

A lethal combination of stealth and strength

Arunkumar Bhatt

INS Kolkata is the most complex multi-role destroyer

MUMBAI: Armed with supersonic BrahMos cruise missiles, INS Kolkata is the l argest and most lethal multi-role destroyer of the Indian Navy. It will be the first of Project 15 Alpha. Though of the Delhi class, it has been modified extensively to add stealth.

As Roopa Byce, wife of Vice-Admiral Sangram Singh Byce, Flag Officer Commanding-In-Chief of the Western Naval Command, pressed a button on Thursday, the warship slid down the slipway of the Mazagon Dock into the Arabian Sea to the tune of Sare jehan se achchha.

Ms. Byce named the destroyer, resplendent in colourful buntings, Kolkata.

The destroyer's keel was laid in September 2003. It is likely to be commissioned in the Navy in 2010. Two more Kolkata class vessels will be inducted in the subsequent two years. The Kolkata has 16 BrahMos launchers — eight on each side.

The destroyer is likely to get long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM). The Mazagon Dock has not named the missile but indicated that it is being "co-developed" by the Defence Research and Development Organisation.

Vertical launch system

A defence source said the destroyer might have a 24-cell vertical launch system for SAMs in its forward and aft areas, making it a total of 48. Four AK-630 rapid-fire guns would back the missiles. The ship will have a gun for surface targets. There are also twin-tube torpedo launchers and anti-submarine rocket launchers.
Besides a multi-function radar system, the destroyer has the Humsa-NG hull mounted sonar and a Nagin active towed array sonar.

Like the Delhi class, Kolkata will be able to operate two multi-role helicopters.

All sensors and weapons are integrated in a state-of-the-art system; the networking of the weapons and censors will enable the warship to combat multi-threats in different dimensions simultaneously.

INS Kolkata's sides are covered and rounded, making detection difficult. All missile launchers and bases of the superstructure are covered for the same reason. A four reversible gas turbine propulsion system will afford the warship to cruise in excess of 30 knots.

Chief of the Army Staff Gen. J.J. Singh, who was the chief guest, stressed the need for an advanced and strong navy in the emerging geo-political scenario.

PS ; I asked MDL officials at defence expo 2014 about VLS cells, they said 48 Barak 8 VLS and 16 Brahmos. No. of VLS cells are same as Chinese TYPE 052D if you don't count their pathetic excuse of SAM missiles for point defence against supersonic missile FL3000N 24 cell pack which compensates for HHQ 9's inability to intercept sea skimming supersonic missiles.

This doesn't make much sense as the EL/M-2238 STAR and Thales LW-08 are both fulfilling the same role on a warship, from the pictures it is obvious that the P-15As have the LW-08 whilst the Shivlaik class has the EL/M-2238.
That's what is confusing me. Other websites also say the same thing:
Kolkata Class Guided Missile Destroyers - Naval Technology

Kolkata Class is equipped with Thales LW-08 long range volume search radar, EL/M-2248 MF-STAR multimission radar and EL/M-2238 L-band STAR surveillance radar from Israel Aerospace Industries.

@Penguin : Do you have any idea how this ship compares with other newly built destroyers from around the world? In terms of armament and firepower and sensors?

It is principally an AAW vessel, which will also have standard 8 AShM and probably 8 LAM, it has a dual purpose medium gun and a couple of dual purpose close in guns, 2 large ASW helicompters (with secondairy anti surface roles) ASW tubes, ASW rockets. Pretty much comparable.

As for the electronics, modern and capable though perhaps not quite Type 45 and such. But I'ld take it in a heartbeat (just as I would take P17)

@sancho @Abingdonboy Another interesting development will be the P-15 SLEP upgrade. This would
add MF-STAR radars, BrahMos & Barak-8 missiles to the 3 x Delhi-class DDGs.

A naval version of Maitri SR-SAM (called Point Defense Missile System or PDMS) was shown in posters in
previous defence expos, this should be the replacement of Barak-1 in future and could find it's way onto such
frigates and corvettes as P-16A and P-28 Kamorta.

dosen't look that stealthy.......i find type 052d better looking

MBDA-DRDO Maitri SRSAM system (VL-Mica inteceptor + Upgraded back end of abandoned Trishul SAM system) If like MICA, then it is a good 1m longer than Barak 1....

P15A Kolkata next to a pair of P15. The lineage is clear. As for SLEP, the Delhi's, Talwar's and Shivalik's all have Russian Shtil SAM from single rail launchers. Installing a VL for Shtil could be an interesting upgrade, as the base system and radars remain unchanged while ability to deal with multi-axis attacks from multiple missiles would improve. Alternatively, one could install an 8-cell VLU for Brahmos and a pair of 8-cell VLU for Barak 8 in place of each SRL and fix up the sensors fit accordingly. THat's a matter of investing.
