Not every missile needs to hit the target aircraft. An exploding projectile in proximity of the target can cause sufficient damage to the aircraft and write it off.

Actually, research into key technologies required of a weapons systems is usually indicative of the state's interest therein; where else would the research get all the funding from if India wasn't looking to develop it?

The Chinese HQ-26/19/29 were first unveiled in research papers, as were the AESA radars of the J-10C, J-16, and J-20.
