Pakistan Air Force prepares for arrival of final Block II JF-17 and JF-17B fighter aircraft
Alan Warnes, Kamra - Jane's Defence Weekly
The final three Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) JF-17 Thunder Block II multirole combat aircraft are set to be delivered to the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) by late June, the service has told Jane's .

The aircraft are part of an order placed by the PAF in late 2017 for an additional 12 platforms that are currently on the Aircraft Manufacturing Factory (AMF) final assembly line at PAC Kamra. AMF has built more than 100 JF-17s since the first JF-17 (serialled 09-111) was rolled out in November 2009.

Production of the Block III variant is expected to begin later this year PAF Air Chief Marshal Mujahid Anwar Khan told Jane's, adding that the service "will make a decision on one of the two new Chinese AESA [airborne electronically scanned-array] radars we are currently evaluating for these aircraft". He noted that, although supportability and cost will be factors in the decision, the service hopes to have the aircraft operating with the new radar by March 2020.

The Nanjing Research Institute of Electronics Technology's KLJ-7A radar is being marketed by China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC) with air-cooling and liquid-cooling options. The second contender is Leihua Electronic Technology Research Institute (LETRI), which offers an air-cooling AESA radar known as the LKF601E.

Meanwhile, the Aircraft Repair Factory (ARF) at PAC Kamra recently completed its first 1,000th hour inspection on the first JF-17. This comes after PAC Kamra and China's Chengdu Aircraft Industry Corporation (CAC), which co-developed the fighter, worked on two JF-17s each to develop the working procedures.

On May 15, the British "Jane's Defense Weekly" reported that Pakistani Air Force sources revealed that Pakistan Aviation Industry Corporation (PAC) is about to deliver the last JF-17 Block 2 (second batch) multi-role fighter.

According to reports, the Pakistan Air Force added an order for 12 aircraft at the end of 2017, and these aircraft are currently undergoing final assembly work on the Pakistan Airways assembly line in Kamala. Since the launch of the first JF-17 fighter (No. 09-111) in November 2009, the Pakistani aviation industry has completed the production of more than 100 JF-17 fighters.

Pakistani Air Force Commander Mujahadi Anwar Khan told Jane's Weekly that the third batch of JF-17 fighters will begin production later this year. He said the Air Force "will have two new Chinese models. The source phased array radar makes a choice, and we are currently evaluating them.” He said that although there may be some support and cost issues, the Air Force hopes to start operating equipment before March 2020. A new type of radar aircraft.

The two types of radar currently participating in the competition are the KLJ-7A radar of the Nanjing Research Institute of the China National Electric Power Group (CETC), which has a liquid-cooled/air-cooled optional mode. The other is the air-cooled LKF601E active phased array radar that the Aviation Industry Group's Leihua Electronic Technology Research Institute (LETRI) has withdrawn.

In addition, the Pakistan Aviation Repair Shop recently completed a 1000-hour inspection of the first JF-17, and the Chinese aviation industry and the Pakistan Aviation Industry completed the workflow design with two JF-17s.

Observer network military commentator said that according to previous reports, in 2017, the first JF-17 fighter jet was sent back to China, and the overhaul operation was carried out at AVIC Changfei (Changsha Aircraft Maintenance Plant), in accordance with the contract between China and Pakistan. After completing the overhaul workflow design, China transferred the relevant technology to Pakistan and helped it build its own overhaul capabilities. Overhaul is an important step in the life of the aircraft. Pakistan will have the ability to maintain the JF-17 fleet on its own. Of course, the relevant key parts and supplies still need to be provided by China.

In 2017, Changsha Aircraft Maintenance Plant began the design and construction of the JF-17 overhaul line and the first aircraft overhaul work.

According to previous public reports, Chengfei began the preliminary design work of the “Beilong Blcok 3” fighter in 2017 and completed the design within 2018. Since the "Banlong BLCOK 3" does not significantly modify the aerodynamics of the aircraft, the trial production and flight test hours of the aircraft can be shorter. It is no problem to complete the trial flight test within this year and deliver the first BLCOK 3 in 2019.

"Zilong Blcok 3" is still competitive in both types of radars, and the detection range is doubled compared with the previous generation model, and it has strong anti-interference ability, and AN/APG-83 with American F-16V fighter. Agile beam radar is at the same level, and its performance is higher than that of the Israeli model EL/M-2052. After equipped with the new radar, the radar detection range of the Snapdragon BLOCK3 will exceed the radar of the Indian Su-30MKI fighter. The detection range is sufficient to ensure the effective range of the 霹雳-15 air-to-air missile with an effective range of more than 100 kilometers. Previous photos have shown that Pakistan is trialing. This kind of missile.

If Pakistan’s JF-17 BLOCK 3 acquires the J-15 missile, it will also be the first missile to appear on the international military market. The United States has not yet begun to sell AIM-120D missiles with similar performance to the J-15, due to India. The Su-30MKI's radar is relatively old. Even if Russia's R-77-1 missiles like the AIM-120D and the 霹雳-15 are purchased, it is impossible to guarantee that it will play its full range. In addition, Pakistan may also get the LOCK with the BLOCK3 fighter. 10 fighting missiles, this kind of missile is a revolution for close air combat, the fighter can hardly escape its attack with its own mobility - it is difficult for India to obtain the advanced weapons needed to fight against the Snapdragon BLOCK3 through the international market. Since the number of Pakistan Air Forces is absolutely inferior to that of the Indian Air Force, the technical advantage of purchasing new fighters has become the main method for the Pakistan Air Force to offset the quantitative advantage of the Indian Air Force. This may also be the main consideration for China to provide these new weapons to Pakistan.

""On 14 November 2011, at Kamra air base, one PAF JF-17 crashed, killing the pilot. On 27 September 2016, one PAF JF-17 crashed into the Arabian sea, the pilot ejecting safely.""
These are 2 incidents. Someone please share the details of 3rd incident (if happened)
What 3rd incident??

Sq. L. Mohammad Hussain's JF-17.
A bird hit, he ejected but the seat didn't work and parachute didn't open.
(Sadly) he embraced shahadat.

What is the Range of J15 missile? Is it export name of PL15 or its a new missile?

Cannot wait till the block 3 prototype appears. We have been waiting for a very long time for a 4.5th generation plane to be added to the Pakistan airforce. I am praying the planes wing area is increased like the gripen and a new powerful engine is added and composite materials to make the plane lighter. AESA radar. New systems, IRST, HOBS is expected.

Finger crossed on the prototype first flight later this year. Then production in 2020 and by 23rd March 2021 they would be flying in our skies ready to defend.

It's a badly translated article but this bit would answer your question. (Also the pic with the PL15 is photoshop iirc)

"Since the "Banlong BLCOK 3" does not significantly modify the aerodynamics of the aircraft, the trial production and flight test hours of the aircraft can be shorter"

does not significantly modify the aerodynamics of the aircraft
In other thread aerodynamics of suspected Block-3 is quite change, especially nose of the jet and block-3 is based on JF-17B as per various senior/professional members on PDF, which clearly have a different nose then standard JF-17 @Keysersoze

The nose being slightly altered is not the same as a major aerodynamic alteration. Look at the J10B nose and compare it to a J10A. People need to chill out a bit. It will look like a JF17 but everything that will be improved will likely not be visible.

as i said block-3 is based on JF-17B, nose is one thing, vertical tail is swept back, more wing area, spine is also different etc etc @Keysersoze
