Putin: Russia 'Working on' Dalai Lama Visit | Russia | RIA Novosti

President Vladimir Putin pledged on Tuesday to continue efforts to bring Tibet’s exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, to Russia.

Asked about the possibility of inviting the Dalai Lama to Russia’s Republic of Kalmykia whose residents profess Buddhism, Putin said that the government “will work in this direction.”

“For those who are not familiar with the details of this issue, I can say that this problem is related to the fact that the Dalai Lama is viewed more as a political leader than a religious one,” Putin said during the annual pro-Kremlin youth gathering at the Lake Seliger camp in Tver region.

The Dalai Lama last traveled to Russia on an informal visit in 1992. He took part in a sacred service in the Ivolga Datsan (monastery), the Buryatia-based Russian Buddhism Center, and met representatives of the republic's Buddhist community.

In December 2011, the Buddhist leader met with a 1,500-strong group of Russian pilgrims in his Indian residence in Dharamsala, the center of the Tibetan exile community.

China would likely object to any foreign leader's meeting with the Dalai Lama, whom Beijing accuses of orchestrating the March 2008 unrest in Tibet, which left 19 people dead and 623 injured.

China occupied Tibet in 1950 and claims the region has been part of its territory for centuries. No state has yet recognized the Tibetan government-in-exile.

The Dalai Lama, who fled Tibet in 1959, has repeatedly said he seeks autonomy for Tibet rather than independence from China.
Russia is feeling more and more insecure from China's rise. China and Russia worked very hard all throughout the 1990's and 2000's to normalize relations and demarcate the border. But now Putin has decided to throw away the accumulated good-will and make Russia neutral as between USA and China.

China cannot rely on diplomacy to achieve national revival anymore. The only way is to fight for our strategic goals -- talking is pointless and invites more aggression.

The weakest link that we must exploit is Vietnam. They are the closet and easiest target to strike. Simply take our navy down to the South China Sea and wipe out their island garrisons. When Vietnam reacts, attack Hanoi by land and air. Occupy their cities by force and secure the South China Sea from Cam Rahn Bay.

This simple, fail-proof strategic move would secure China's rise for another 10 years at least.

China has now successfully put together a formidable force to dominate nearby waters (within 500 km).

Our national defense strategy is two stage: first focus on our maritime periphery -- completed by 2012 this year -- and then focus on a blue water navy -- to be complete by 2020.

We can now take on any superpower in the East China Sea, South China Sea, Yellow Sea and of course around Taiwan. Not to mention crack weak countries like Vietnam and india just like toothpicks.

This re-pay for whatever China aggressive rise, not only Russia any nations neighbors with China will doing same thing too. China will make a full list of it.

Russia might not like China growing so powerful but it won't have an armed conflict with China to protect Vietnam. Even at the height of its power, and having signed a formal defense treaty, USSR simply sold out Vietnam and did nothing when China spanked you in 1979.

In today's world, China must get used to a little bit of hostility from its neighbors. This is a natural consequence of our meteoric rise. But at the same time, we must also get used to spanking our weaker neighbors more, because this is what keeps potential enemies off-balance and unwilling to risk an armed confrontation with China.

so basically china vs USA,Russia,India,Japan,South korea,Vietnam,NATO and manyyyyyy moreeeeeeee..........
There is a big difference between countries who are uneasy because China is so powerful and countries who will actually fight China to the death.

If it was so easy india will jump right out and absorb all of China nuclear warheads so USA and Russia can continue the fight ;)

This will affect their relations for sure....but how much, time will tell. Go on Putin...

so funny to see the chinese equating his systems to the western systems to make them look useful.. so cute

but equating cat to Lion doesnt make Cat any stronger.

Sino, why in every occasion, you post those pics of aircrafts and missiles???Russia still has more quality weapons(which they produced decades ago) than those you posted..do you really think Russia fear your those "Futuristic Weapons"????damn..it is SU(predecessor of Russia) from whom you got techs of those weapons and still does(though may be in lesser amount)... :hitwall: :hitwall:

Putin is actually quite PRO-China.This statement of his pretty much vidicates Chinese View of Dalai Lama.

Really did not get what Vietnam or India has to do with it ? Putin invited Dalai Lama and he is saying fire missiles on Vietnam & India. Grow up pair of balls and issue warning to Russia this time :P
By attacking Vietnam and splitting india into many smaller countries, China will enhance our power and keep a potential enemy -- Russia -- from risking an open conflict with us. No need to feel bad for Vietnam or india of course because you already openly confronted us thinking that we are so peaceful we will never spank you silly. Well, you thought wrong -- and Russia's move is forcing China to get more aggressive too!
