Rescue ops in Japan affected Indo-Russian naval exercise

New Delhi, May 31 (PTI) The annual naval exercise between India and Russia took a hit last month after the Russian side cited engagement of their ships in rescue operations in the Tsunami-hit Japan.
"Russian Navy had deployed some of its warships for rescue efforts in Japan. They had already informed us that they will not able to pledge any warship for the exercise due to their engagement in Japan," Navy spokesperson Commander P V S Satish said.
He said that following the communication from Russian Navy, a decision was taken to dispatch the Indian warships only for a port call at the Russian port Vladivostok.
Excluding the sea phase, the two navies carried out all other joint drills, he added.
"For the three days there were exchange of officers from both the sides and we performed all the harbor drills together," the spokesperson said.
Three Indian warships INS Delhi, INS Ranvijay and INS Ranvir went to Russia last month to participate in the annual exercises there.
Indian Navy further denied lodging any complaint with the Russian Navy.
"We have a very old relationship with Russia. All other activities between the two navies are right on schedule," the officer said.

In a big snub to India, Russia has cancelled two bilateral war games with the Indian Armed Forces after months of planning and a well-established arrangement. The move has left the Indian Navy furious over the "unprofessional manner" in which the decision was taken.

Russia first called off the Indra series of exercises with the navy late in April. Later, it cancelled another planned war game with the army in June.

The cancellation of the naval war game came as a rude shock as the cancellation came after five Indian warships reached Vladivostok. The ships were allowed to dock at Vladivostok as a port of call and then they had to sail back to India.

Russia apparently stated that their warships were not available as they were deployed in Fukushima to help Japan in relief work in the wake of a massive earthquake followed by a tsunami and a major nuclear crisis.

However the latest insult to injury was the calling off of the army exercise. Moscow said that it would not be able to host the exercise as there was little time to prepare.

Apparently, the Russian moves come in the wake of India choosing two European fighter jets as the top contenders for a $10.4 billion fighter jet contract.

Russia's decision irks Indian Navy

Angry over the way Russia treated Indian warships that sailed to Vladivostok, the Indian Navy, in a report sent to the ministry of external affairs (MEA), expressed its displeasure with the cancellation of the drill.

Sources told Headlines Today that the navy said in its report that it was upset with the "highly unprofessional manner" in which the Russian Navy decision was dispensed.

The navy recommended that a government decision be taken on how to respond to Russia's snub. The tone of the navy's report says that Russia was a "fair-weather friend", a country on its best behaviour only when it gets big defence contracts for India.

It has also recommended that the idea of Russia being looked at as a "long-time strategic partner" be given a re-look since "close strategic partners do not treat each other this way".

I thought russian and indian are best of friend?

I don't think the Indians can complain too much after their actions over the MiG-35 and other occasions.

oh dear. denial sets in.

I just love the way crowd starts jumping up and down at the very thought of a crack in India-Russian ties... and then subsequent suggestions of how Pakistan will benefit from it... It's nice entertainment!

One MIG-35 deal not happening will not kill a half century old partnership... call it denial, the fact is you know it that it is a fact! From friendship, economic or strategic context, not working with India just does not make sense for Russians or Indians and both sides know it... BTW, with FGFA on and so many other contracts in pipeline are still alive... So, don't count on the death knells of this relationship as yet...

and yes, as buyers we still need to shake our suppliers to get their house in order if they want more business... Thats just business!
