Russia testfires intercontinental ballistic missile

MOSCOW: A Russian submarine on Monday successfully test-fired a new ballistic missile from the Barents Sea to the far east of the country, a navy spokesman said.

The Sineva missile was launched from the submerged submarine "towards the Kura test ground in Kamchatka," navy spokesman Igor Dygalo was quoted as saying.

"The head section of the missile reached the test ground on time," he said.

Russian television showed the missile thrusting out of the sea at the start of its trajectory.

The Sineva, which has the NATO classification Skiff SS-N-23 and a range of 8,900 kilometres (5,500 miles), was brought into service by Russia's navy this July.

It is designed to carry four individually targeted warheads, according to a local news agency.

Russia is our potential adversary as they are India's ally. Politically we should not support their moves.

Its about balance of Power in the world, Bi Polar world is Good for all humanity, Only one Superpower is destructive for the world. Russia is organizing in every acpect of Economy and Military Power. Once it is united again (as Putin isbelieved to be focusing at) it will be the best deterrent for the countries under pressure from US. Doesnt necessary mean that Russian's hate Pakistan. They have no reason for that other than what happened in Afghanistan but they know it was US and not Pakistan. Whatever may be the future but if the world is to survive against the baisism of US they are to unite under Russia and create a Balance of Power.

Russian nuclear submarine launches intercontinental ballistic missile
25.12.2007, 16.22

MOSCOW, December 25 (Itar-Tass) - Nuclear submarine Tula of the Russian North Fleet has performed a combat training launch of the RSM-55 intercontinental ballistic missile, North Fleet’s press service told Itar-Tass.

“The missile was launched from a submerged position when the submarine was in the Barents Sea and its warhead arrived at a destination point at Kura testing range in Kamchatka on time,” an official at the press service said.

The submarine Tula performed a similar task December 17, when an RSM-54 missiles, the brainchild and product of the Makeyev State Missile Center, successfully hit targets on Kamchatka.

RSM-54’s were commissioned for combat duty 18 years ago. At this moment, their replacement for Sineva missiles is underway.

“July 9, 2007, President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on adding the Sinevas to the tables of naval equipment,” a source at the Makeyev Center said.

“The Sineva compound has a big enough and durable technological potential, which will help us to react promptly to defense challenges of the 21st century through to 2030,” the source said.

The submarine Tula falls into the family of Delfin 667BDRM submerging ships /Delta IV submarines under NATO classification/. Each ship of the family is equipped with 16 missiles.

A total of seven subs of this class have been built since 1981.

The Delfins have a length of 167 meters and the maximum effective depth of submersion of 650 meters. They are serviced by 140-strong crews.

At this moment, the Delfins make up the backbone of Russia’s sea-based strategic nuclear forces.

A special testing was organized at one of the submarines in 1990, when the crew launched all the sixteen missiles in a single salvo, which was an imitation of real combat launches

IT SEEMS THAT RUSSIAN FORCES ARE REGAINING THEIR PREVIOUS STRENGTH AND GLORY. FURTHER, THEY HAVE ALSO RE STARTED THE PATROLING OF STRATEGIC BOMBERS LIKE TU-160 BLACK JACK AND TU-22M BACK FIRE DUE TO WHICH THE NATO HAS SHOWED ITS CONCERNS.

AFTER ALL, GOOD MOVE BY RUSSIANS.

Russian bombers flew over US aircraft carrier in western Pacific

Updated at: 0600 PST, Tuesday, February 12, 2008

WASHINGTON: A pair of Russian TU-95 Bear bombers overflew a US aircraft carrier in the western Pacific at an altitude of 2,000 feet (660 meters) over the weekend, prompting US fighter jets to scramble, a US defense official said.

Four F-18 fighters jets intercepted the Russian bombers Saturday morning, but not before they had overflown the USS Nimitz, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Japanese F-15 fighters had earlier scrambled to intercept another pair of Bear bombers, and escorted them out of the area, said a US military official who asked not to be identified.

The official said one of the Russian bombers flew directly over the US carrier at an altitude of 2,000 feet, while the second bomber flew at its side at the same altitude.

The Nimitz, which was on a routine patrol in the western Pacific at the time of the incident, was back Monday in port in Sasebo, Japan, the official said.

It was not immediately known whether the United States issued any protests with the Russians.

two things i dont really get

1) Why russia tested the Sineva ICBM when they already have a world-class, top of the range Bulava ICBM. i think testing the bulava from the borei class would have been a much better warning.

2) Why they are using the bear bombers for patrol instead of Tu-22M or Tu-160. The bear is so noisy it can be picked up by sonar!
