Saab Targets Smaller Gripen Orders After Losing Bid for India​

Saab AB (SAABB), the Swedish maker of the Gripen jet fighter, is focusing on winning smaller orders from as many as nine countries after being excluded from India’s military program, Chief Executive Officer Hakan Buskhe said.

Saab sees potential for Gripen orders in Brazil, Romania, Croatia, Denmark, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Hungary and the Czech Republic, Buskhe said in an interview today. Hungary and the Czech Republic are existing customers that may expand their orders, he said.

“We feel good about the Gripen program, it has lots of potential,” Buskhe said, adding that it “remains a profitable business.”

India’s defense ministry informed Saab April 27 that the Gripen hadn’t been shortlisted for its plan to buy 126 jets.

India is focusing on France’s Dassault Aviation SA (AM) and the European Aeronautic, Defence & Space Co. after also turning down Boeing Co. (BA) and Lockheed Martin Corp. (LMT), Buskhe said

Saab still has a “good chance” to win an order from Brazil, which initially plans to buy 36 planes, Buskhe said. The Stockholm-based company has “not received any negative signals” from Brazil, and hopes for a decision “within months,” the CEO said.

They know.. but the competition was notoriously famous and everybody knows the analysis was on technical basis.

The mainstream Media is not reporting any such BS. If the decision had been political then US had to there. But Defense Ministry made sure that IAF gets the best and debrief has been given to all other contenders who were ousted. Moreover Italy does not matter much in India's Strategic circles and that is why they work in collaboration with Pak on many issues including UN permanent seat as well as providing pak with military equipments.

Says who? They are some of the greatest fighters ever built. It is just that they did not suit our requirements, especially with all the strings attached. There were better options available without the strings and we went for them. That does not change the fact that they are really formidable and battle proven fighters.

Neither of the two personalities you named had anything to do with the down selection. The MOD had total freedom of action and they went with the recommendations of the IAF. The Rafale and the EFT were the IAF's choice. Take care what you read in the media. In a free media environment, every loony and crack head idiot can say what he feels like, it is the audience which has to judge its credibility and worth.
