"Basically, what we have done is create a microorganism that does with carbon dioxide exactly what plants do—absorb it and generate something useful," said Michael Adams, member of UGA's Bioenergy Systems Research Institute, Georgia Power professor of biotechnology and Distinguished Research Professor of biochemistry and molecular biology in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences.

The process is made possible by a unique microorganism called Pyrococcus furiosus, or "rushing fireball," which thrives by feeding on carbohydrates in the super-heated ocean waters near geothermal vents. By manipulating the organism's genetic material, Adams and his colleagues created a kind of P. furiosus that is capable of feeding at much lower temperatures on carbon dioxide. The research team then used hydrogen gas to create a chemical reaction in the microorganism that incorporates carbon dioxide into 3-hydroxypropionic acid, a common industrial chemical used to make acrylics and many other products.

"This is an important first step that has great promise as an efficient and cost-effective method of producing fuels," Adams said. "In the future we will refine the process and begin testing it on larger scales."

New discovery may allow scientists to make fuel from CO2 in the atmosphere

Kinda sceptical about this, what happens if it gets out of hand and these organisms start multiplying uncontrollably and remove too much CO2.

This microorganism is similar to cyanobacteria, an ancient primitive unicellular microorganism which first performed photosynthesis leading to the Oxygen Revolution and they released Oxygen as a waste product into the atmosphere oxidizing the Earth's atmosphere for the first time. This artificial microorganism absorbs CO2 which it uses to create sugars for energy, these microbiologist want to use that sugar to convert to energy, very good step and advancement in microbiology.

Unlikely to happen because humanities CO2 output is growing rapidly and will continue to do so, this microorganism even if it multiplies won't be able to absorb too much CO2 but may help to cause a small reduction in atmosphere CO2 if enough exist and other circumstances.

Also CO2 only makes up .03% of the Earth's atmosphere so most likely the CO2 this microorganism will be absorbing is CO2 in lower atmosphere.

good for humanity.

You know what else would be good for humanity if you guys would control your cows which are contributing heavy green house gas like methane. Methane gas traps ~20 times the heat CO2 does in the atmosphere...

by you, do you mean indians???

kia mutlub?

dude it has alredy happend...thy hav discovered it....hav u read da news in da post?

Im not talking about the discovery! They say it will help scientists develop fuel from CO2 in the atmosphere, and that will require a lot of research before they could actually make fuel!

yes dat will require lot of time n work...not happenin so soon!

but hav u read Audio's question in da end?

@Kinda sceptical about this, what happens if it gets out of hand and these organisms start multiplying uncontrollably and remove too much CO2.

there was a movie too where disease/virus spread afta da chemical/liquid wz spread accidently n multiplied n then killd lots of ppl...

Not happening very soon...They are still trying to characterize the gene and its stability...But good progress

And also trying to stabilize the process because the process does not occur in nature...it occurs due to modification...anything modified from nature is hard to produce and stabilize...but good start

:agree: @Marshmallow thats why I said it will take time to stabilize :D
