Should Turkey remove millitary conscription ?

I saw a Turkish unit in a mock action, last year. I though I was a fit person who could hold his own, but these guys wrestled me to the ground easy.

Even though those guys were conscripts they took their job seriously. I talked with them after the exercise, though they didnt like the conscript system, they agreed that it promoted unity, nationalism, and offered them better knowledge for what to do as a caree

The job of a Soldier isnt to die for his country. Its to make the enemy soldier die for his.

Clearly you have not read about the Finnish-Soviet War.

Clearly you have not read about the Finnish-Soviet War.

I actually have knowledge of the Winter war.

Am I missing something other than:
1) Stalin putting his nose into how to carry out the invasion
2) Fins knowing they were going to lose and deciding to kill as many Soviets just to feel better about themselves
3) Fins having superior tactics and strategy in every battle fought

Am I missing something?

Conscription armies are useless. Look at what happened to Argentinian soldiers in Falklands... Turkey should have a specialist commando forcelike the SAS but bigger..

or saddam's 4th largest army back in 1990. we saw what happened to that in the 1st gulf war...powder.
killing is a business and not everyone is cut out for it. definitely, quality beats quantity. not only today, also back in ottoman times.
in ottoman empire there was no conscription until 1850. it largely consisted of devşirme and tımarlı sipahi units, which received salaries. same with yeniçeri units.
conscription defies logic.

It's too deeply institutionalized at present so the short answer is "no they can't"

George S. Patton in clean version :D
Also if you train me for 2 months i still would be useless since all my life i live in a city and even walking for 1 km is long distance for me. How can i fight in mountains with only 2 months training. It is waste of both my time and governments money.

But when some day like independence war of turkey, my country needs people to fight for survival of the nation, this time i will gladly serve for my country. But in peace time, conscription is useless.
I've come to accept the fact that not every man is a special forces material from the birth. But I can't accept a man who says he can't fight at all.

Conscripts don't necessarily study the art of war, there are enlisted officers for that. The thing is, we have to keep our population trained to a level so that they can stand for their country in "rainy" days. This ain't Europe, we are surrounded by hostile nations.

Si vis pacem para bellum.

There were zillions of other factors that led to the outcome

You'd be surprised with what difficulties a person can endure to survive. Killing is just takes a little getting used to. In the end it always beats getting killed.

Total BS, Janissaries and Sipahis were the elite forces, how do you think a man could earn a fief and become a Sipahi without fighting? Ottomans had very large units of irregulars especially during the first couple of centuries you could see the good old Seljuk light cavalry charges :)

To me it's a bit like the difference between a State run business as opposed to a Private business. The State run one will be full of compromise, slow and wasteful. A Private business will always be concentrated, sharp, cunning and a a bit of a bastard, will also be more successful...

Depending on which State Run department your talking about. Nothing runs better than the Military Department.

I think there should be a 1 year compulsory military training for all males 17-18, but if they do not want to carry on after this, then they should have an option to leave. Forcing youths to join the army against their will is kind of dictatorial.

Also, people who join the army willingly will naturally be better than those who were conscripted.

It has nothin to do with dicta. Military is something inside every Turkish people. We also have a say "Her Türk Asker Doğar" which means Every Turk borns as a soldier. But nowaday nobody would wanna send it's son to the army because of politics. Let's keep politics out.

I get that you Turks are serious about your military, but why force people to join the army? it will put them off, they won't have much motivation and will fail the military, eventually even disliking the military. A voluntary soldier will not be like this.
