Sri Lanka offers military training to India

Following the successful military operations against the dreaded Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in May, Sri Lanka has offered training in counter-insurgency military operations to several countries including India, Army Commander Lt. Gen. Jagath Jayasuriya, said.
BBC quoted Gen Jayasuriya saying that Sri Lanka had offered, through diplomatic channels, training to India, the United States, Bangladesh and the Philippines.
“Pakistan has already asked if it could send its military cadets to train in counter- insurgency operations. We’ll give a favourable response,” he said.
But the Pakistanis would not be trained in the newly captured areas in north Sri Lanka but in the south east of the country, he added. Sri Lanka’s south east has a strong Muslim presence.
Express learns that small groups of eight soldiers had played a decisive role in the operations against the LTTE.
These groups had replicated the techniques and tactics of the insurgents to beat them in their own game.
In an innovative step, the Sri Lankan Army began to train officers and other ranks together, so that there could be better rapport and communication between the leaders and the led in the battlefield.
He said that the Sri Lankan military envisaged specialist courses lasting up to six weeks, directed towards small groups.

Good to see Lankan trained Pakistani . Lankan has 30 years of experience against organized foreign backed insurgency. Pakistan can learn alot from them. Terrain still the same, thick forest and small pockets of resistance.

This must be a joke, cant be right. Sharing relevant experience is something else, Training....noway this cant be right.

don't see why it should be so shocking or arouse laughter. When it comes to counter-insurgency, Sri Lankans are amongst the best in the world.

How long have we been fighting the taleban full-fledged? Less than 3 years.

Sri Lankan Army was fighting indian-sponsored tamil tiger terrorists for a quarter of a century. Through counter-insurgency and counter-terrorist operations, they got lots of first-hand experience.

Even the Americans were sending crack commando teams to Sri Lanka to get training.

Pakistan did do some Army training. Every year Sri Lanka Army sends officers who do Officer Exchange Program @ Pakistan Military Academy. But this topic concerns COUNTER-INSURGENCY training, which we are still building on.

We are mostly training their Air Force, but we also arm the Sri Lankan army and air force with infantry weapons as well as air-defence/artillery/mortar/ mechanized armour/aircraft ammunitions.

During the recent operations where they eliminated LTTE leader, they were using Pakistan Ordnance Factory ammunitions which were being shipped to Columbo on daily emergency basis.

It is also true that Pakistani Air Force pilots were being dispatched to carry out some of the ground-attack sortie missions in tamil tiger territory.

I have been saying for almost 1 year that Pakistan should consult with Sri Lankans (and Mexico & Columbia) on counter-insurgency tactics. These countries have much more experience than we do. And even though the enemy and terrain are different, knowledge of counter-gurilla tactics and knowing what weaponology and strategies work best is the way you can get the upper hand.

i have met sri lankan officer when we were in the academy, we also met them when we underwent the various local courses within Pakistan, and we also them when we were doing courses abroad, and guess what i have yet to see Sri Officer who has not be injured in an active operation! Everyone whom i met (expect those in PMA) were war vets and they showed us their war injuries proudly. Someone had a few splinters still lurking inside him and a few others showed us holes made in their bodies by tamil bullets.

The ALL have been through it and they ALL have been part of that fight. They have lots and lots of experience in this field and i dont mind asking them a few questions and getting a few tips from them!

Kindly read the whole thread and the reasons & capacities in which training happens & are required, the training concerns COIN operations & SLs are an experienced entity, the weapons we provided were for conventional warfare, COIN strategies were developed by themselves, which needs to be shared, as they might be useful in our COIN operations. Do read the whole thread and then comment plz.

xeric i encountered the same. I met a lankan major who was once shot twice before having a wall of brick topple on him. He was covered in old scars. This guy was like a pitbull. He used to tell us about ltte tactics. Remember, it was japanese who invented kamikaze. But it was tamil tiger who invented the concept of suicide bombing. Our advantage is that US is sending us IED signal jammers for our army convoys

Brother no need to burn your blood over this. North of SL is similar to North of Pakistan so sharing tactics and counter insurgent's tactics is nothing something to be ashamed off. Rest Pak Army has shown its metal in Swat operation but we also took heavy causalities of young officers and Jawans. If some tactics shared by friendly country can bring these numbers down in any COIN ops in Pakistan in future (Allah Forbidden) PA will surely will able to use these tactics to reduce its causalities. So, what is wrong with that?

sharing is good thing ..................but i knw pak army is best in the world

learning should never be an issue, always keep learning and re-inventing.

Is this a joke. Many srilankan Army is trained by Pakistani trainers. Many of Asia's special forces come to Pakistan to get trained by SSG.
