Govt, TNSM agree on Nizam-e-Adl in Malakand

* Taliban declare 10-day ceasefire in Swat
* NWFP government to announce implementation of Shari Nizam-e-Adl Regulations today

By Daud Khattak

PESHAWAR: The NWFP government and Tehreek-e-Nifaz-e-Shariat Muhammadi (TNSM) leader Sufi Muhammad have agreed on the implementation of Shari Nizam-e-Adl Regulations in Malakand, an official source told Daily Times on Sunday.

The decision was taken after a meeting between the government and Sufi Muhammad in Dir district. A member of the Swat Qaumi Jirga told Daily Times the two sides had signed an agreement whose key points were peace in Malakand division and implementation of sharia. Another key point was the formation of a committee to work towards freeing captured Taliban, Aaj Kal added.

Ceasefire: Hours after the meeting, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) leader Mullah Fazlullah announced a 10-day ceasefire in Swat through his illegal FM channel. “The Swat chapter of Taliban agrees with talks between the provincial government and TNSM chief Sufi Muhammad, and ceases hostilities for a temporary period of 10 days,” locals quoted Fazlullah’s broadcast. They said he had elaborated the Taliban would review the progress of sharia implementation after 10 days and decide their future course of action. He said the TTP fully respected the TNSM chief’s decisions.

The Taliban on Sunday also released a Chinese hostage kidnapped over five months ago, terming it a goodwill gesture in response to the government’s actions.

Implementation: According to official sources, NWFP Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti would announce the implementation of Shari Nizam-e-Adl Regulations in Malakand during a meeting at the Chief Minister’s House today (Monday).

Deaths in 20th Century Wars, Conflicts and Repressions

Dear PDF reader,
Below is a list of the deaths in the 20th Century due to international wars, civil wars, repressions by governments, etc. I compiled this summary list from this source: Twentieth Century Atlas - Death Tolls

This source has a lot more detail about each conflict as well as the various death estimates that have been published for each. My list below is the "median" or "consensus" number for the particular "event". I compiled it on a spreadsheet and then ordered in descending order of the number of deaths. I thought it was useful to gain some perspective on the magnitude of similar events going on today, in the context of what has been human behavior and experience in the last 100 years. Conflicts causing less than 30,000 deaths were not included in my list but may be found at the source above. -- TS

Slugger:

Shariah based Nizam-e-Adl was practiced in Swat, Dir, and Bajaur till 1968 when these princely States were absorbed in Pakistan. There is nothing wierd or draconian about it.

Shariah based laws ensure rapid and affordable justice to the people.

Similar judicial systems with localized flavor are practiced in India too:
1. A vast swath of territory comprising of parts of Jharkand, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and Talangana (Karnatka) are governed by the Naxalite Marxists. Naxalite Peoples Courts are a lot more efficient than the Indian Judicial system.
2. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and parts of Arunchal Pradesh are governed by the local groups. They have a relatively fair system of internal governance.

Shariah system will apply to only about 5 Million people in Swat / Malakand divisions. By comparison the “unconventional system of governance” in India applies to more than 100 Million people!

Dear TruthSeeker

The “Twentieth Century Death Toll Atlas” appears to be a bogus and biased document.

It conveniently ignored the estimated 600,000 deaths caused by the USA in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Most of the deaths during Stalinist purges (repression) were as a result of internal displacement, hunger, crops failure.

The US caused an estimated 1 Million deaths of Iraqi infants and children through denial of baby formula and medicines imports during the sanctions era. This perpetuating tragedy was later corrected through Madeline Albright’s ‘Oil for Food” program.

The 1.70 Million deaths during the Vietnam war are skewed on the low side. It does not take into account deaths caused by US actions in Laos and Cambodia.

Also conveniently ignored is the "virtual death" caused by Israel through wasting about 5 Million Palestinian lives since 1948.

Ever heard about Biafra? why is it not even mentioned in the score card?

How about Rawanda?

How about the 250,000 deaths in Bosnia?

I have a basic problem with yr line of argument..There r ills in our system n there r ills in the indian syatemm..I fail to see how faults in indian system can be pointed out to defnd faults in our system..OFFENCE IS NOT THE DEFENCE WHEN WE IN A FORUM N DISCUSSING A SOLUTION..ITS PLAIN SKULLDUGGERY.
The indians r evil but how does that make us good

Is there any independent criticism of these systems??!!
How can u say they ve relativey fair system of governance or r more efficient..Is there a system of checks n balances in the system to ensure its fair n doesnt punish the innocent.
I wish our desire to bring the indians one peg down all the time doesnt make us condone things that are not right either.

Does Sharia system has checks n balances..wat kind of Sharia will be implemented..Will there be the inhuman penalties like stoning to death n chopping of hands..I thin these r more relevant questions..If they r implemented properly n humanly most importantly with common sense than i m not sure anyone got ay problems with that..N how they r going to be implemented ought to be te debate issue.

Dear Bloodniron:

I never said there is anything wrong with having a localized favor of judiciary in accordance with the wishes of the people.

There is nothing wrong with 100 million people in India having their preferred system, or 5-6 million people in Pakistan having their own.

Shariah laws should not invoke images of stoning or hand chops; there is nothing inherently draconian about them. Shariah / Fiqah has its due processes, which appear to work far better than our standard judicial processes that favor the rich and powerful.

Exactly my point..Thanks..
But are u sure thats the kind of Law that s gonna be implemented there..I am not sure..With experience from Saudi Arabia i ve reasons to be scared..N Those cruel images come to the minf for that exact reason -because thay r cruel..If they getting implemented properly, i dont think anyone s got a problem..Just we need to be sure wat we implementing there..

As fo Mr Wahraich i suggest u read some books..N u r v sensitive to religious matters..loosen up a bit please..:hitwall:
