Tourists held for looking at 'terrorist' materials in China 'watched a documentary on Genghis Khan'

Tourists held in China for more than a week after being accused of looking at "terrorist" materials were detained after they viewed a documentary on Genghis Khan, a spokesman for two members of the group said.

A total of 20 visitors from South Africa, Britain and India were held at Ordos airport in China's northern Inner Mongolia region on Friday last week, sparking diplomatic concern.

Six Britons, five South Africans and one Indian have already been released, while the remaining eight tourists are expected to be deported in the coming days, officials in South Africa and at the British embassy in Beijing said.

A statement released by a British-based spokesman for two of the group, 74-year-old Hoosain and 68-year-old Tahira Jacobs — dual UK and South African citizens that travelled on South African passports — claimed all the tourists have been released without charge.

It also said the detentions may have been made after an "unfortunate misunderstanding" concerning Genghis Khan, a 13th century Mongolian warrior hero who founded an empire from eastern Europe to the South China Sea.

"They watched a documentary on Genghis Khan to further their understanding of the region they were in at the time, and this may have mistakenly been deemed as 'propaganda' material," the statement said.

"It can only be assumed that junior officials who made the initial arrest in Inner Mongolia made a mistake, due to perhaps their unfamiliarity of the English language."

The group, "a mixture of multi-faith men and women from both (sic) Islamic, Christian and Hindu religions", were on a "deluxe sight-seeing tour of China" which was expected to last 47 days, the statement said.

They were arrested 30 days into the tour following a visit to the Genghis Khan Mausoleum at Ordos, it said.

An official at Ordos's foreign affairs office said on Thursday that he understood the group "looked at and propagated something about violence and terrorism".

Local police declined to comment on the case.

Gift of the Givers, a humanitarian relief organisation based in South Africa which was assisting members of the group, had previously said in a statement that the detentions took place after claims that "someone was watching propaganda videos in the hotel".

Eleven of the tourists were deported earlier this week, while an Indian man, Rajiv Mohan Kulshrestha, was released late on Friday night and sent back to his home country early on Saturday, officials said.

China has launched a wide-ranging crackdown on what it claims is "terrorism" in its restive western Xinjiang region.

A new criminal law submitted last month to China's rubber-stamp parliament widens the list of activities which can be defined as "terrorism", state media said.

The resource-rich Inner Mongolia region sees sporadic protests by Mongols against government policies which include moving nomadic herders from grazing lands into towns, and vast coalmine development.

This is one of the reasons why even I, a very pro-China person, can't rely on China's definition of terrorism.

China tends to overuse this thing, with the government using it for very small reasons.

Just look at the mess they have created. Arresting someone for watching some documentary.

I was among the first few, who wrote a letter of protest when CNN and other International Media, used quotes, when referring to terrorists of the Kunming Massacre, for they were nothing but terrorists. But, all people that China quotes are not.

Were they planning Mummy Returns next sequel? Did they found Genghis Khan's tomb? :o:

from earlier reports they said they were watching ramadan and other praying videos, now flip flopin to genghis khan video

Is watching ramadan or praying videos a crime in China ? Don't play with our dignity ? By God we know how to live with dignity and how to die with honour.

if you watching on alqueda.com or other banned websites

Just want to make a point here. Watching does not translate into support. There are thousands of reasons for someone to visit banned sites. One reason may be to get a feel of how terrorists think and operate. I if I were to visit such sites the purpose would be to write articles against the mindset of the terrorists. For this you really have to understand them and know what their figures are saying. Iyad El Baghdadi who was deported from the UAE visited such sites often. He is a very liberal fellow with no terrorist links. Also don't confuse him with the baghdadi that runs ISIS. Type his name on google and learn about him.

Also I suspect the Indian fellow did something against the unity of China which was why he was deported but it is possible that his narrative is true. Country's today have knee jerk reactions to their people going to sites that are deemed a threat to national security. They do not ask the reasons the person goes to these sites.

a group of religious nuts going there sight-seeing for 47 days? lol. i'm sorry, i don't buy that shit at all

It is written that they were a group of elderly. And elderly retired people can have a LOT of time.
