What's new

Turkish Naval Programs

-6-7 TF-2000 to replace Gabya, at least 2 will be used for Expeditionary group.
-4 Barbaros class will be upgraded, will serve 15 years more.
-4 İ-class to replace 4 Yavuz Class.
In terms of firepower the fleet is already expanding.
After TF-2000 we may expect to hear another project, a compact version with multi-role abilities.

We could acquire OPVs, simply an Ada-class sized platform with lighter sensors and arms. Private shipyards/design offices offer some good OPV designs based on earlier experiences (from 70 to 90 meters). OPV is a perfect platform to secure EEZs, an OPV costs 1/8th of a frigate (or even lower depending on its configuration). OPVs will relieve load of frigates/corvettes to escort drill ships or other economical operations in EEZs.

A ship doesn't have limited range as long as it is supplied, but its capabilities can be restricted due to sea state, the only concern would be maintenance schedule and crew's health. @Neptune could tell better if there are other matters to limit a ship's operation. But from my perspective considering naval bases on Aegean and Mediterranean seas we don't have any issues about covering our EEZ.
I think if situation in Libya is resolved, we could suppy them with patrol boats, OPVs and coast guard ships.

Any details about that multi-role ship? A Cruiser, maybe destroyer...

Some of Turkish OPV solutions:
Delta Marine (Subcontractor of Milgem Project, Also cooperates with TAIS):
84 meters, landing platform, RWS (2-3), fore 76 mm cannon.
OPV-D80_1_DM.jpg

RMK Marine (Contract builder of 80 meters coast guard ships, in collaboration with Fincantieri):
It offers two versions:
66 meters, 2xRWS, 1xFore cannon, positions for SAM (Stringer type) 2x2 SSM launchers (Multi Mission Corvette)

66 meters (It is written as such in the brochure but i belive it is either about 56-60 meters or MMC version is about 80 meters), 2xRWS, 1xFore cannon without landing deck (an OPV solution)

3-D of MMC-OPV:
MR-OPV_RMK.jpg

TAIS (Assocciation of ADIK-Sefine-Sedef):
90 meters OPV, Offspring (Modified version) of Ada-class 3xRWS, 1x Forecannon, Multiple RHIB with stern ramp for Special Forces-COIN Operations.

SEFT Design :
It is slightly overloaded with weapons but assume it as stripped of RAM and SSM launchers. Offers RHIB.

Dearsan (NTPB contractor):
Dearsan has presented some coast-guard vessels, opv and corvette designs in IDEF 19. Enlarged versions fo NTPB suits well for this, as well as 90 meters corvette offered for Turkmenistan also possess some potential. 2 of the corvettes presented below can be converted to OPV when needed. However, in my opinion when we need an OPV of +90m, Ada class (as in TCG Ufuk example) can be easily converted for such needs with light arms, Aselsan STOP-Muhafız RWS.

Final notes:
Unlike the cutting edge Fast Attack Craft requested by Navy (High speed-heavily armed-sleek) , an OPV is much easier to design and build with the current experience of multiple shipyards and design offices. We will have variety of options once Navy has published such a request. It will be a nice competition. Some of these designs have competed in tenders of foreign navies, they may possess foreign systems for convenience.

Great post...

As far as I know, there are a few more studies

Gülhan Shipyard (It has investment partnership with Dearsan)

OPV_03.jpg

Length Overall 76,80m, Displacement 1200 t, Range 3000 NM, Hull Structure AH36 Steel Sealium, 4 x Diesel Engine 2 x CPP 3 sets of Diesel Generator. Weapons are 1 x 76 mm Super Rapid Gun (sine qua non for TN :) ) 1 x 40 mm Light Gun, 2 x 12.7 mm Remote Controlled Stabilized Machine Gun System, 2 x 12.7 mm Manuel Use Machine Gun, 2 x 2 SAM SIMBAD-RC(Navalize Mistral) Anti-Air Defence

As a matter of fact, a offshore patrol corvvette equipped with Hisar-a, Por-sav on stabilized turret or on Aselsan STOP, Temren missiles and Air bust ammunition capable auxiliary/CIWS cannon like Gökdeniz : can easilly provide sufficient self-defense, also have sufficient firepower to engage other surface platforms, helicopter and most of low altidude vehicles and asymetrical targets. We are already more further on navionics side, compare to navalized weapon systems.

TN can supply many multirole corvettes quickly and cheaply with a low program cost, from the civil industry, while Naval Shipyards continue to focus heavy frigates.

I was searching for that for hours and finally given up. Thanks :).
I used to think Gulhan shipyard is Korfez installment of Dearsan. Since Tuzla industrial area doesn't have more place to expand, i assumed they have purchased a shipyard and enlarged it. Almost all of projects are common and new naval platforms are shared on Gulhan shipyard's website. Maybe Dearsan wishes to separate production for foreign market and rebrand under Gulhan, i dont have much information on this.
In my opinion, Hisar-A would be a little much for OPVs but if they manage to develop a shorter VLS for short range AA missiles it could be nice for MMCs. Por-sav can be integrated via Atılgan KMS (like Simbad-RC) pretty easily. Aselsan also offers smaller variant-single barrel version of Korkut-Gökdeniz (called Korkut-IHA) which suits perfectly for OPVs.
I am rather expecting/wishing to see Alpagu block III than weapons or missiles; optimized for naval platforms in maritime reconnaisance, retrievable and reusable (able to launch multiple times with light maintenance). A simple solution for OPVs to conduct reconnaisance in wider area instead of maneuvering the vessel, and providing intel for SOF-COIN teams. The UAV may be large as a SSM, and placed within tubes in sizes of a SSM launcher.
There are ongoing efforts for integration of Umtas on naval platforms (A few tests has been conducted) but i consider this project as an R&D for conversion of air(or land)-launched missiles (temren, TRG-122, kuzgun or Spike-NLOS equivalent) to be integrated on naval platforms.
I know Block II offers applications for naval platforms but personally i didnt fancy launchers and capabilities.

It baffles me how the Navy doesn't aquire or even has any future plans to aquire cheap Offshore Patrol Vessels, especially with how big of an area it needs to patrol and protect. Anti-Smuggling operation can easily be carried out by an OPV instead of having to appoint a frigate for it.

Is it funding, attention or just a lack of vision?
New type patrol boats are meant for that - patrolling, however they have lack of some key abilities (Verteg, SOF service, long term deployment)
Ada class is officially referred as "Offshore Patrol Vessel/ASW Ship",however ASW role is stronger*. We will slowly adapt the new concept of OPVs** and get familiar with it as situation in EEZs and economical operations in foreign EEZs (such as Libya's or more to come) are rising. OPVs are easy to procure, build, deploy and they are not strategic assets like frigates or FACs which requires long term plannings. Once the decision is made, it will take 4-5 years to deploy dozens of them.
It is neither about funding nor vision, situation has emerged in recent years and still evaluating which kind of platform is best to procure for long term needs.
*(Ada class,İ-Class, TF-2000 are products of vision from 25 years ago they fit to current needs , Ada-class comes handy as Patrol vessel, have resulted in various designs of pure OPV, however it is debatable if we need advanced sensors and weapons on it with current situation and requirements of an OPV)
**(the load was mainly on Coast Guard until recent years then it has shifted to Navy as tension increased and hot spots got farther from homeland)

Do we have enough personnelle, and officers in TN to put together OPV ops ?

I was thinking ada class covettes would be used as OPV because we didn’t have OPV. But they could do that until the entire OPV structure is up and running. Can ada class corvettes be used as escort vessels ?

I kinda hope our corvettes would have something that enables them to be useable in ASW.

Are the armaments on wiki true ?

ADA is a light frigate it is 100mt long and have personnel 90+, just needs proper air defense( G40 ).

DzKK refers to Ada Class as Patrol/Escort/ASW Vessel--Corvette.

OPVs run with small sized crew compared to Ada-class, slightly more than NTPB. We have acquired 16 NTPB.
Ada class is too expensive to be used as an OPV (as it is needed currently in EEZs) but yes, it is classified as escort/patrol and ASW vessel and also used for those missions. We could buy a new light armed compact version for just the price of RAM system by replacing CODAG propulsion with CODAD.
