US to veto Palestinian bid for statehood at UN

Washington will veto any Palestinian effort to seek a statehood at the UN Security Council (UNSC), said the US government on Thursday.

"It should not come as a shock to anyone in this room that the US opposes a move in New York by the Palestinians to try to establish a state that can only be achieved through negotiations," Xinhua quoted US state department spokesperson Victoria Nuland as saying during a news briefing.

"So, yes, if something comes to a vote in the UN Security Council, the US will veto," she said.

On Thursday, the Palestinians announced that they decided to go to the UN later in September to request the recognition of a full membership of the state of Palestine established on the territories occupied by Israel in 1967 with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The decision by the Palestinians means that the effort by the Obama administration to convince them not to seek a vote at UN, had failed.

What the shame,seriously !

It is not funny. It is tragic.

I found it a stupid move, made me laugh. Hence the icon.

Anyway this is why giving UNSC members veto power isn't the best practice. For such issues, UN needs to have a general assembly vote where all nations of the world are in a democratic process, where the decisions are made based on the choice of majority.

I agree.

UNSC seems like it was created to appease the big 5 only.

Ever hear of a US lobbying group called AIPAC?

The American pro-Israel lobby group? Heard of it well too many times.

But isn't it dumb, that nations that have nothing to do with the region, are allowed to approve or veto a decision that will affect lifes in far away lands? If any decision is made, it should be made by the Israels and Palestinians, the ones who are directly affected by this conflict.

Nothing to do with the region? Oh there is something. It's called Oil. The Americans need a foothold into the region to meet their energy demands. They are also, by request, are acting on behalf of the Israelis via AIPAC. Right now, Palestinians don't have that trump card (someone on the UNSC to act on their behalf).

The UN is turning into a joke right now. First the Libyan episode, now this. They could not prevent wars, could not settle the Kashmir issue. They are mum about Syria.

Why have big 5 nations with veto power? It is not the 80's anymore. Are we not in a democratic world then?

I agree the UN desperately needs to be reformed. However, no large power (UNSC members) will want a nobody to dictate their affairs.

there should be no veto power ........... that only benefits interests of big powers.
shame on USA.................UN is a puppet organization
