There is nothing scientific here, its an issue being politicised for demonizing the Muslim communities. First cousin marriages etc in the Muslim understanding is different from that of Hindu or Christian or other cultures. Unlike Christians or Hindus, Muslims practice multiple marriages. Unlike Catholics, divorce is normal in Muslims, you can marry after 41 days of a divorce, unlike the Hindus Muslims don't exactly restrict themselves to their own clan, tribe etc they can marry anyone, even christians and jews. First cousin marriages in their normal understanding means a marriage between the kids of two brothers. This is a Christian understanding not a Muslim understanding because its more than likely that both brothers may have different mothers from different unrelated families or the kids being married have mothers from families which are by no means related to the male parent's family. This is the reason why first cousin marriages (where relevant) in Islam is 'discouraged' but not prohibited.
