General Silva had orders to destroy Goa and surrender..He didnt do that..he refused a direct order from Salazar..after the surrender when he returned to Portugal he was court martialed and jailed where he died..he may have been a foreign general but he was with honour.

This is just how Indians were reacted in 1971 war. Portugal troops in Goa were surrounded by Indians on all sides Besides that, they were thousands of kms away from Portugal. So you can't really celebrate to that.

They fell in love with Goa and who could blame them! but they had to be kicked out and we did a fine job in giving them the boot back home.

In 1961= Indian government was still young & military was in a building stage. Portugal was still a power to recon with their global presence... they could have resisted the Indian troops but they understood the futility of it & surrendered...
To be fair with them- they were away from home with few support...

But in Pakistan's case 91000 soldiers was a big number & along with support from West pakistan they had considerable amount of fire power- but still they surrendered .. which I can not term a brave act- so there lies the difference between Pakistani surrender & portugese surrender...

Portugese were outnumbered but pakistanis were not. They could have easily faught on for few days by which security council or US would have done something.

We took back out land from an imperial power. Of course we will celebrate. You seem to have the big heart syndrome.

It was the stubborness of dictator of Portugal Salazar. Had they gone French way on Pondicherry, Portuguese would had departure with dignity. But long before they knew they will be defeated but fought because of Salazar, they took away all the gold of Goa under "Banco Nacional Ultramarino" to Portugal.

Pakistan gave full support to imperialist Portugal and United States tried for unsuccessful UNSC sanctions on India.

Portugal was not a major power in 1961. The total army strength was less than 100,000. The total forces in Goa itself was less than 4000 while there was no airforce except for transport aircrafts. The Naval force was very limited.

Portugal was bound to be defeated except it was counting on US and NATO forces but US position was that it won't support India if the war was referred to the Security Council. With US taking an almost neutral stance, Portugal was fighting a losing war.

India got back Goa but Portugal lost almost all its colonies between 1961 and 1975 including the ones in Africa.

WTF portugal had land in india in 1960's , first time heard that , im learning some more history :D

The Portuguese left their mark on Goan culture that is no lie but it was done with bloodshed and the destruction of Hindu temples something which does not get much mention I bet in schools in Lisbon.

Especially the Goan inquisition which was initiated against Hindus, newly converted local catholics, Syrian Christians and Jews(Knanaya). Unfortunately the documents got destroyed at a later period else we would have known the exact brutality of the Portuguese.
