Why does Vietnam lag so far behind China, despite similar cultures and political systems?

Vietnam is OK to me except the sea dispute. Best wishes to our neighbor and brother! Hope there will be more serious talks and peaceful conversations on Vietnam and China issues.

The country's size and population determines the upper ceiling of their development at certain technological level. China is 30 times larger and has 15 times the population. This means under the same system, China will have a much much higher potential of development than Vietnam.

I see you are still too ashamed to show you are Vietnamese. I'm ok with that bro because I know lots of real life Vietnamese who claim to be Chinese even when the justification is not there.

Btw, what is the status regarding your creation of a non Chinese surname?

LOL your trolling attempts are so adorable.

Hung can also be Vietnamese too.

And if I was ashamed of being Vietnamese, then why do I keep telling people here that I am Vietnamese? Or is that small piece of critical thinking a bit too complex for you?

Why don't you post your flag? Hung can be vietnamese because Vietnamese use Chinese surname--which is understandable your ancestors did not invent writing.

But if you choose to be Chinese, I will embrace you like a brother like I have done to my other Vietnamese-Chinese friends in real life.

But back to topic, @Hu Songshan @waz why is this person allow not to post his flag but others have to?

Most Viets tell Westerners that they are Chinese to get jobs.

lol you were the one that trolled and derailed this thread, you even tried to make other sensible Chinese members to join you in trash talking Vietnam, which you failed.

Looking at your post record, you are just a disgrunted troll. Enough said, bye.

Depends if it's a Chinese run company in Canada. Most people in Canada get hire by your qualifications and the way you can bullshit your way through the interview.

many reasons: wars, corruptions, incompentence, imperialism/colonism/socialism/communism and everything inbetween, delusions. last but not least if Vietnam was an island, protected, we would be certainly better off.

VN doesn't have a big enough market to buffer the unprofitable initial stage of heavy industry. Given the huge size of China, China still spent several decades to let the industry and economy grow before they become competitive.

VN could do like what the Koreans and Japanese did, to hook on a few special regions of a big (Chinese/Indian/US) market. China is now thinking of outsourcing some industries and that is opportunity.

On the other hand, now no country in the World would be willing to hand out fundamental industry systems like the USSR did when they were under ideological fervor.

vietnam is no China, discounted or not.

Vietnam will always be someone's vassal.

Bro, I don't know if you been to vietnam? The vietnamese are decent workers but they ask for a lot of perks in return. If you're a manager sent from overseas, the *** kissing is so prevalent that it makes one blush.

Well, despite all its problems, between Vietnam and the other major country in the roughly same developing stage, my bet is on Vietnam. There are some fundamental differences between the two countries.

Vietnam has a larger population and equal land mass of Germany, which is in itself an industrial and economic behemoth of Europe.

Japan, too, has a similar land area as Vietnam and slightly more population, yet Japan is the 3rd largest economy in the world.

If Germany and Japan can do it, there's no reason why Viet Nam cannot. In fact one can argue that the industrial prowess of the Vietnamese and their people's hard working nature will be a catalyst for even further development.

The strength of the Vietnamese is their ethnic solidarity. As their nation is by in large homogenous. They can be another Japan. And like Japan were able to subdue the Mongols in the 13th century and were able to defend their own "keep" against regional states of mutual interest(s). I see the Vietnamese as equals in regards to Japanese martial spirit, and the will to dominate. They are survivalists and the fact that they remain ever resilient despite historical vagaries is testament to their national potentiality. :)

These are just periods in history, my friend, every nation experiences these tragic events in history in regards to domination. Why even China. In fact She was subjugated multiple times by foreigners the Mongols and Manchu, then in the century of humiliation. Yet despite being forced to accept spheres of interests by foreign forces, in the end, the Chinese were able to 'build' their figurative great wall, so to say (as per their national anthem) that states:

起來!不願做奴隸的人們!
把我們的血肉,
築成我們新的長城!
