In a snub to US, India to go ahead with S-400 missile deal with Russia

India is looking after its interest, fair play to them. I think Russia will appreciate this gesture greatly.
But I believe it's the end for US arms sales, apart from a few things.
India can afford to snub US in short term but dealing with allies like Saudi, britain, Singapore and Japan is very important and how they see this. India might have support of Israel and pentagon on this which can make sure our smooth sailing in near term. Indian foreign office already bought the idea of wait for orange to go rather then get into quid pro quo with state dept.

India is starting to pick and choose. Cancelled PAKFA and ordered S400.

I wouldn't be surprised if we get the predator drones from the US too.

Not after this.
Russia needed India's support here. This will annoy the US to know end make no mistake about that. You shouldn't be looking to them now.
You also have Israel and France as fallbacks which are both on pretty good terms with you.

nah you're mistaking the US for a country of single standards and frankness. they'll still support india to counter big bad china and pakistan.

Take a look at the steel tariffs fiasco, you don't tow the line then its bye bye.

That's actually a very good point, can't believe I stupidly forgot about that. Fair point, though the US knows it won't lose its European allies and Canada by increasing tariffs but they might lose India. European countries will almost certainly still be hostile to Russia but India may grow closer to China and definitely to Russia. They want Indian influence in Afghanistan which they might get but that influence may not be in their favour but in Russia's

We have never purchased super critical military equipment from the US even when the going was good. India pays cash and wants to stick to its non alignment and it's own agenda. This will worry US in two ways -One: Military deals worth billions between India-US could be affected. 2: This will of course please Russia but China as well. Although India follows its own policy of non alignment, any sugary exchanges between Russia-India-China will create a great deal of discomfort.

So to summarize, India will have it's way. US will chose to ignore the matter and India may opt to close the deal with Russia in hushed tones.

They couldn't give a toss about India. Yes it would have been better to have them on board against China and sort of push them in front and use them as a buffer, but the Indians are not stupid. Although China remains a rival India knows that to throw their lot in will be a mistake they couldn't afford to make. Look at what happened with Pakistan in the 90's.... The US will look elsewhere and carry on.

this whole steel thing is part of bigger game. Mainly USA and EU. One hand EU is putting Large punitive measures on google, FB & MS on data privacy and USA is retaliating this with Steel Tariffs. If it had been against Chinese Steel then Australia should feel the heat rather than EU. There is no tariffs on Indian, Japanes and korean steel yet.
Orange just looking for political Mileage from EU and China by showing them he is/can pick fight with them. Once he get 2nd term this all will vanquish.

Absolutely right, it will Annoy US to no end. But they had it coming. Sanctioning countries left and right. They proved themselves to be unreliable to sell their assets to India. But they cannot ignore the one country they are comfortable with, in Asia. Not counting Japan.

Take away India and Indo Pacific command would be jobless with only Japan and Australia toeing their line.

Though India is appearing neutral, I feel we owe Russians massively for what they have given and supported us.

Sir , the only thing is we cant make China as an enemy for sake of US .... We have a massive trade with China , Iran and Russia , yes US is important but they cant dictate their terms ...

It will be suicide for a govt which will compromise India's sovereignty .... Its a hard lesson learned after years of foreign rule :) We cant afford to repeat the mistakes of our forefathers

i'm not saying india will align with america completely or make the same mistakes as pakistan but the US views china as a bigger threat than russia and it is not hard to see why. they know just as well as anyone else what a crucial ally india could be to counter chinese influence not just in south asia but in east asia as well. india is strengthening its alliances with countries that have disputes with china especially with regard to the south china sea. just like the US, india cannot afford full scale animosity with china but can push back against their growing influence.

unlike pakistan, india has a lot more power in the region to offer the US while the US has much to offer a developing india that russia nor china will be able to or be willing to provide.

few years ago, a wise man said that there are few things which US has to do and as soon as US complete those things US will not be a Super Power as it is today.

True regarding the EU, but you have to remember when Canada and the UK are put in the same bracket this means everyone else is for worse.
By the way Japan had tariffs put on from March dude, they are not exempt.

I wouldn't say comfortable but one they can do business with. How the US reacts on this annoyance will interesting, but one thing is for sure they don't go back on threats i.e. sanctions. If they are seen to do so then it will be interpreted as hot air.
As for Russia you indeed have a good friend there.
