China keen to sign MoU with BD for road, rly links via Myanmar
China is keen to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bangladesh to establish direct road and railway links between the two countries via Myanmar to boost economic activities, reports agencies.
"China will provide support to Bangladesh to increase the tri-nation road connectivity involving Myanmar," said the visiting Governor of Yunnan Province of China Qin Guangrong when he paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her office.
They discussed wide range of bilateral issues including expansion of trade and business and enhancing cooperation in agriculture sector, said Prime Minister's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad after the meeting.
Mentioning the business prospect between the two countries, the Prime Minister said her government has decided in principle to set up a Consular Office at Kunmin in China in a bid to boost bilateral trade and business in the region.
She welcomed the Chinese leader to her office and said Bangladesh wants to enhance regional cooperation through connectivity for the mutual benefit of the people of this vast region.
In this context, Hasina sought Chinese cooperation in establishing direct highway and railway links with China via Myanmar as well as in construction of hydroelectricity plant and exploration of gas and oil in Bangladesh.
She mentioned that Bangladesh continues to uphold the "One China policy and recognises Taiwan and Tibet as integral parts of China."
The Prime Minister also sought further cooperation in the field of agriculture, education, civil aviation, tourism, power and energy between Bangladesh and China as well as Yunnan province.
The Governor arrived here on a two-day official visit at the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's invitation extended during her visit to Kunming, capital of Yunnan, in March this year.
About the much-talked about tri-nation 111 Kms-long high way connecting Bangladesh-Myanmar-China, Qin said the Chinese government will extend all necessary cooperation to establish the highway.
In reply, the Prime Minister said the proposed highway connecting Chittagong-Myanmar-Kunming would play a vital role in increasing bilateral trade and commerce.
"Bangladesh looks forward to establishing direct road and rail links with China via Myanmar," Hasina said.
Hasina thanked the Chinese authorities for existing air link between the two countries via Kunming that made Kunming-Dhaka trip easier and comfortable.
The Prime Minister reiterated Bangladesh's One China Policy saying that Bangladesh believes in friendly relations with all her neighbouring countries as its foreign policy is 'Friendship to All, Malice to None.'
In reply, the Governor thanked the Prime Minister and the people of this country for showing great hospitality to him and his delegation members since they arrived here.
Qin said the Prime Minister's visit to China last March has strengthened bilateral relation between Dhaka and Beijing to a great extent.
He observed that after the Prime Minister's visit to Kunming, trade and commerce between Bangladesh and the province has increased significantly. Now various quality Bangladeshi goods are available in the markets of Kunming, he said.
Communication Minister Syed Abul Hossain, Principal Secretary to PM MA Karim, PM's Office Secretary Mollah Waheeduzzaman and Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Zhang Xianyi were present.
