‘Bully us, wishful thinking!’ China preps for ‘people’s war’ as trade tensions mount

‘The Chinese economy is a sea, not a small pond’
Negotiate, sure! Fight, anytime! Bully us, wishful thinking!’

That’s the message the China’s Communist Party sent out across the country on Tuesday in an effort to boost its citizens’ morale amid rising trade tensions with the United States, according to a CNBC translation.

Here’s the graphic from the People’s Daily, which was posted on its WeChat account with the headline, “This is the attitude of China!”:

Up to this point, Chinese state media has apparently been reluctant to fire up the propaganda machine over the trade war, but that’s no longer the case this week in the wake of President Trump’s latest push for increased tariffs, as you can see by this Bloomberg chart of “trade war” mentions:

One editorial published by the Xinhua News Agency and the People’s Daily accused the U.S. of “greed and arrogance,” explaining this is a “people’s war” — a phrase introduced by Mao Zedong to describe China’s fight the Japanese.

The piece didn’t call out Trump by name but did say “the trade war in the United States is strongly advocated by one person and one team.”

The rhetoric has also been amplified across state TV, where CCTV anchor Kang Hui, according to CNN, said China would “fight for a new world,” and that “there’s nothing we haven’t seen before.”

Kang, in a clip that has gone viral across Chinese social media, said “the Chinese economy is a sea, not a small pond. A rainstorm can destroy a small pond, but it cannot harm the sea. After numerous storms, the sea is still there.”

The U.S. stock market has been getting hammered with each development on the trade front in the past few sessions, though the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.82% and S&P 500 index SPX, +0.80% are bouncing back in Tuesday’s session. Meanwhile, the Hang Seng Index HSI, +0.52% and the Shanghai Composite SHCOMP, +1.91% both took losses.

It's always before the government says or does anything, social media starts a war first.

CN economy getting worse under 25+++% tariff and Xi will go broke when he has to spend more money to fight against hundred million Cnese "rebels" got huge support from US.

See wat happened to Lybia, Syria etc after their economy get worse ?? The "rebels" support by US turn those countries into civil wars

CN people's war mean "human wave" attack

The human wave will be entering Vietnam for a repeat of 1979, but this time with much higher technology.

If tariffs cause China to enter into a great depression, all those millions of unemployed men will be drafted into the army for WW3. Be careful what you wish for.

Trade war is not beneficial for anyone. China has a huge reserve and economy, it will survive a trade war with US but it will be severely wounded.

Trump is an an idiot and near illiterate. Rationality will not work with him. I see the Chinese approach as fighting fire wth fire atleast as far as rhetoric goes.

Fully expecting however china to cave in and ride out trump presidency. This guy do not care about the US economy he is willing to take any pain as it won't effect him personally.

China with all its size is reliant on trade and any trade war will impact the entire global order. No country will be immune from it. In this case China has to see some of the US points on intellectual property rights and rebalance the current situation and open up its economy just as US has opened up its economy to china. It can not be argued that China has not been a beneficiary of US trade.

Dude. Right now China is barely responding to tariffs. In response to American tariffs on 200 bn USD, China responded with tariffs on 60 bn USD.

Why is China not touching American companies in China?

Companies like GM, Ford, Tesla should be relatively easy.

China's response is more tactical, rather than the-elephant-in-the-china- shop way.

Check out the 5000 items China has placed tariffs on; each targets specific segments of US society.

The point is to hurt them, not to hurt ourselves. We do not trade war being paid by us.

So far, US seems to have let their own consumers pay for the tax on imports.
