Mahatma Gandhi cannot be accorded the 'Father of the Nation' title by government as the Constitution does not permit any titles except educational and military ones, the home ministry has said.

In an RTI response to Lucknow-based student Aishwarya Parashar, the home ministry has told her that no action was taken on her plea to the President to declare Mahatma Gandhi as 'Father of the Nation' because Article 18 (1) of the Constitution does not permit any titles except education and military ones.

Aishwarya had filed number of RTI petitions seeking details about Gandhi and the reasons of referring him as Father of the Nation. In response, she was told that no such title has been accorded to Gandhi.

Driven by a patriot zeal, Class VI student Aishwarya wrote to the then President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to issue a notification declaring Mahatma Gandhi as 'Father of the Nation'.

Aishwarya had filed an RTI petition seeking to know the action taken on her plea by the President and the Prime Minister.

The application was transferred to the Home Ministry with instructions to explain the action taken on her plea. In its response, the Home Ministry told Aishwarya the above mentioned reason why the title of 'Father of the Nation' cannot be accorded to Gandhi.

sorry to say but Bhagat Singh and Netaji were not people's men rather they were on their own individual pursuits.Gandhi moved the nation, the poor and gave India an identity on the world stage, an identity of peace and tolerance, while Bhagat Singh and Netaji were too short lived to make a mark, not only them but other freedom figters like LALA lajpat rai, chandrshekar azad(the mentor of bhagat singh), dadabhai naoroji...why freedom fighters why not buddha,ashoka,chandragupta...why not Krishna and Rama...??

Nice explanation !
I myself dont like M. K. Gandhi & am a great fan of Subhash Chandra Bose.

Bhagat Singh & Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose were great & legend in their own way but Gandhiji united the nation like no other person did. His living his teaching & his philosophy was designed for unity of masses. He was a more a leader than a freedom fighter while Bhagat Singh & Subhashji were great warriors/freedom fighter but less of leader.

Yaar, there are much important issues to solve. Gandhiji is people's Father of nation. We really dont need to worry bout official status. Wont get us nowhere.

Mujhe to takla waise bhi pasand nahi....:fie:

But he did wonders in his life no one can ignore that...

takla......... :rofl::rofl::rofl:

Afterall he was a politician. Infact, during independence, almost 50%+ indian population was SC/ST and their leader was Dr. Ambedkar.

So its always a matter of retrospection that was Gandhiji really Maximum Indian's Leader?

PS : By da way, I reached my Millenium after 2 long yrs. :)

Bhagat Singh shot lived because of Gandhi.... He could have stopped his hanging but he signed.

Netaji was the founder of INA.... I am not asking for removal of Pics but other too deserve this position.

They all fought for Independence in their own way.

Its really sad to see such remarks from some very sane posters.

Mahatma Gandhi was a inspiration for Bhagat Singh, Subhash Chandra Bose & Chandra Shekhar Azad too.

You must read what Bhagat Singh wrote about Gandhiji before making such comments.

He was a man who seeded nationalism in minds of many freedom fighters be it extremist or moderates.

Yeah Dr. B. R. Ambedkar was much popular in the masses but he was a social reformer or great humanist who wanted justice to the opressed classes, swaraj/independence of India was not his top priority.
So Gandhi remains popular leader than Dr.Ambedkar in political scenerio.

Congratulations !

Well - Gandhi of course deserves to be on the currency. As do Bose, Bhagat Singh and Sardar Patel. Infact - India's size is due to the untiring efforts of Patel - remember in August '47 1/3rd of India was ruled by some 500 odd princely states and it was Patel as Home Minister who assimilated them into India.

Yes Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel ...
The unsung hero also stands tall with Bhagat Singh, Subhashji & Chandra Shekhar Azad.

Chill Bro. No disrespect intended to anyone. For me he was just a politician with a very unique style of politics. ie. Satyagraha. Whether Satyagraha brought us Independence is always debatable but seriously, No disrespect to any individual. I was just reacting to the comments of another Indian and frankly speaking I take things with a pinch of salt. Dont believe in emotional breakdown or getting hurt at every other stuff.

No doubt he did all that but thats not 100%. Do read Ambedkar after reading Bhagat singh and Azad. :) . There are some issues which always kept Ambedkar at bay from Gandhiji and those issues are definitely not some 'Greed for Power' by Ambedkar. Rite?

Do talk to Shudras or SC/STs bout this. :)

Congratulations !

Thanks Bro. I appreciate.

Gandhi is a great person but he gifted the idea of secularism,Congress and Nehru family to my nation...And our nation ....and I am still feeling the impact of it....He is not a visionary...rather a good leader without much option at that point of time to take mass movement.....I may be little bit harsh...but he is presented in a too much divine type personality that undermined the contribution of strong and powerful leader like Bose and Patel...Above all he has sacrificed the Hindu people for his aspiration of a secular nation....

Patel was God. The strategy he used to bring all 1200 princely states in matter of months is a matter of Case Study at IIMs and HBS, etc.

Today, I can see the same fire in Modi (Now plz dont being communal side of Modi). We need to understand the Hindu - Muslim stuff in India is a more fascist policy rather than communal. Not bringing religious aspect into this at all which we are always accused of.

Hitler was racist but so were British and other countries. But the genocide he commited was result of his fascist nature rather than racist.

RSS is a fascist organization just like Jamat ud dawa, etc. Dont term it as a religious organization,

As someone who loves Jinnah Sahib more than my own parents, I have to say that this is 'shallow' ! Mr. Gandhi, whatever our differences with him, was a Great Man & a Great Humanist.
