Indian army will never carry out coup, ex-Army chief

India doesn't have a hindu army, and shiv sena is a regional (maharashtrian) political party like many others. It is not the political branch of any fictitious army. So many mistakes in such a small post - very commendable.Just because your religion keeps forming armies every now and then (lashkar-e-this and lashkar-e-that), doesn't mean that other people behave the same way. Be at ease in your mind, because there is no hindu army, no lashkar-e-Hinduism.
Indian Army which has Hindus and Sikhs in large number also protects over 150 million Muslims along with rest of the population in India and do a much better job.

When security of nation is concerned, Indian Army protect people regardless of their religion, sect, cast, creed etc.

We don't have the habit of seeing everything from religious lenses.

Indian army protects and fights for Indians. Period. Indian armymen and women are Indians. Period. Whether they are also muslims or hindus or Sikhs or anything else is their own personal affair, and I couldn't care less.

It is an army of Indians, raised and trained to protect Indians. Some idiots from across the border (like the one I was replying to) thinks that we are like them, seeing everything through the lens of religion.

That ever famous signpost at an Indian army base camp in the Himalayas:

@janon They will say why Hinduism above and Sikhism below where there is I in both names.

I remember when Armed forces refused and asked not to do any census of soldiers on basis of their religion.

These people has to be told from religious POV as they only listen to it. Talk of nationalism over religion, they can't accept it.

Just not possible in India even if they want to. There is enough system of checks & balances in the country to ensure that the power is not centralised or limited to one faction. In India, we know that the army, navy and air force are separated, they have their individual heads and they maintain their own autonomy in functioning.
To centralize all the decentralized powers within a vast country like India & act as one unit is a thinking which is too far fetched.

Why don't army personnel participate in politics?

We can always use military chaps being democratically elected. They certainly will have a greater economic and strategic vision for this country than current UPA.

No thanks sir, no need for any such intervention. We as a democracy need intervention of only one kind, that is people's mandate.

Sry all options must be on the table. When corruption goes unchecked for decades, there will be no options left.

They can be democratically elected after their retirement, or upon resignation from the military. Serving military personal cannot stand for elections, as that would violate the separation of powers that is the inherent strength of a democratic setup.

It would also be a violation of the "Office of Profit act" under Article 102 (1)(A) of the constitution.

Such measures are wisely established to prevent conflict of interest.

You must be incredible dumb if you believe that will happen. India is a democracy. The Army will defend the country from external aggressors and not intervene in politics. All our nations achievements have only be made possible thanks to our stable and democratic system.

Kiddos like you writing endless BS dont know about the life in a non democratic state. Grow up.

Apart from that, a non parliamentary system will never work in a diverse country like India. The Army itself is so diverse that something like a coup will ever happen.

Because its undemocratic! However, ex soldiers are allowed to participate AFAIK. But I dont know how an ex officer has more knowledge about politics or the economy than a diplomat or an excellent economist like MMS....

More that the reply of the former COAS, i m surprised by the question asked by the anchor of the show, He very well knew that this question will give TRP to his show so couldn't resist to ask that question as the news of sometime back on which the question was based on was a bubble which clearly burst on the face of our TRP driven media.

This has simply no BASIS whatsoever.

When we know what happened with Sam Manekshaw, we can rest assured that our Indian Army is only an organisation to DEFEND the borders of this country & not to do CHEAP politics:

Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw after the great victory of 1971 became so powerful that even former PM Indira Gandhi became afraid of him, there were rumors going around that he will soon make an attempt of a coup d'etat, hearing the rumors, Ms. Gandhi directly asked FM if he has any such plans?? FM replied, "I Don't Poke nose in Your Job, You don't poke in myne" :)

When the Great Sam Manekshaw wasn't interested in any coup, how can we expect it from any other general???

IA is a professional army, it knows it's JOB & LIMITATIONS well, so the question asked to the former COAS was SILLY at best.

It's good news for us, even Indian politicians are war mongers, if a military dictator ever comes to Delhi, we will surely see nuclear war happen.

Indian politicians are far too peaceable. Had it been anything but Indian politicians, they would have declared war on Pakistan long ago.
