Indian AWACS thread

Gentlemen, these are the Phalcons.

The only authoratative link I could find is from a RIANOVOSTI edition dated 12/02/2009 :-
Russia to deliver first AWACS plane to India 'soon' | Top Russian news and analysis online | 'RIA Novosti' newswire

"15:0512/02/2009
BANGALORE (India), February 12 (RIA Novosti) - Russia will deliver the first A-50 AWACS aircraft developed on the basis of Il-76MD military transport plane in the near future, a Russian aircraft industry official said on Thursday.
India ordered three A-50EI variants fitted with the Israeli-made Phalcon radar system in 2001. The first aircraft was scheduled to arrive in 2007-08 but has been delayed.

"The AWACS version of Il-76 will be soon delivered to India," Viktor Livanov, vice-president of Russia's United Aircraft Corporation, said at a news conference on the sidelines of the Aero India 2009 air show in India.

In many aspects, the A-50 is comparable to the E-3 Sentry of the U.S. Air Force. It is fitted with an aerial refueling system and electronic warfare equipment, and can detect targets up to 400 km (250 miles) away.

The existing Russian-Indian military-technical cooperation program until 2010 includes up to 200 projects worth about $18 billion.

In addition to the Russian A-50 aircraft, India has recently purchased eight Boeing P-81 long-range maritime reconnaissance (LRMR) aircraft from the United States, and signed a deal with Brazil to jointly integrate domestically developed AWACS systems onto three Brazilian-made Embraer-145 aircraft to be later commissioned with the Indian air force. "

The A-50 is based on the Ilyushin IL-76 airframe produced by the Tashkent Aircraft Plant, with PS-90A76 engines in place of the original D-30KP-2s.

So India going to have three different plateform (Israel/ Russia/ DRDO) .. seems like a mess..

Will there be a compatibility issue and if yes how we will resolve it and at what cost? can some one enlighten me,

Russia Delivers First of 3 AWACS to India

MOSCOW - Russia has delivered the first of three ordered A-50 Shmel (NATO code name Mainstay) early warning aircraft to India, Alexander Mikheyev, deputy head of the Russian arms export monopoly Rosoboronexport, said Aug. 19.

Is that part of the deal with Russia and Israel or is it a different standalone order? So 6 Phalon AWACS from Israel plus these 3 A-50s from Russia? So is it going to be total 9 IL-76 airframes? Or are these airframes going to Israel for the Phalcon radars, as part of the initial orders for 6 airframes?

looks like the country is on a shopping spree.......:toast_sign::toast_sign::toast_sign:

Where have you been?

The title is misleading, since the planes were delivered to us by Israel not by russia. Its a not separate a deal he is talking about, its phalcon only..

I think there is a confusion.

Russia delivers Il-76 planes. Israel fits PHALCON on it and delivers to India.

Never heard of India buying Russian AWACS.

So India going to have three different plateform (Israel/ Russia/ DRDO) .. seems like a mess..

Considering that this news is true I must say not exactly a mess.

PHALCON and A-50 are based on Il-76 and India has a good experience on the aircraft.

DRDO AWACS is based on Embrarer again which is a part of IAF VIP fleet.

I dont see any problems here.

^^garibnawaz - This makes sense ..thanks for clarification.

Please check my post^^^^

Yes, but I found it quite ambiguous, that's why I asked. But thanks anyway.
I think I missed something somewhere.

this is the same old phalcon...not a new one.
israeli elta el/m 2075 mounted on a russian a-50.

Oh ok. Thanks for clarifying. I thought that according to the article these were a different set of airframes apart from the Phalcon ones.

Beriv is another aircraft manufacturer of Russia/USSR.

When Russians began with their AWACS and finalized it they simply handed over Il-76 blueprints to Beriv and asked them to produce the aircraft as well as the AWACS. Hence the whole thing is called as Beriv A-50.

Thats was the time when USSR existed and all companies were owned by USSR Government.

With India the case is different.

India buys Il-76 from Russia (made at Tashkent actually) and then send the aircrafts to Israel who fit PHALCON on it.

Same way DRDO orders Embrarer from Brazil and fit AWACS in India.

Even the Il-78's of IAF are fitted with Israeli refuelling systems.

GB

IAF to display AWACS for the first time during Air Force Day

New Delhi: For the first time, the Indian Air Force (IAF) will put its newly inducted Israeli-made Phalcon Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AWACS) on display during the Air Force Day parade on October 8.

IAF officials at the Western Air Command (WAC) said in New Delhi on Friday that the AWACS, which were inducted in May this year, would be on flying display during the 77th Air Force Day parade.

The parade itself will, as in the recent years, take place at the Hindan airbase in Ghaziabad when the IAF would flying a total of 54 aircraft that would include its most potent fighters such as Su-30MKI, Mirage-2000, and MiG-29s.

The 'Surya Kiran' Aerobatics Team on Kiran MkII trainer aircraft and the 'Sarang' Helicopter Aerobatics Team on their indigenous Dhruv helicopters would also perform their stunts at the parade.

Air Chief Marshal PV Naik will take the salute and the parade would be witnessed among others by Marshal of the Air Force, Arjan Singh, Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor and Navy Chief Admiral Nirmal Verma

Hi Guys -
This is a little confusing..I just found a link in Wikipedia.
link(Beriev A-50 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). that says that this system has been sold to India and this is a full fledged AEW system and not just the aircraft. Any idea?...

Yes the A50 Shmel is a full fledged AEW system, but radar systems can be used on different platforms/aircrafts. The A50 IAF gets will be the same platform that the Russians uses, but we will get the Israeli Phalcon radar system in it. The same Phalcon radar system is also used by Israel and Singapore in a special version of the Gulfstream 550:
