A podded infrared search and tracking system demonstrator developed by Air Weapons Complex (AWC) has been shown mounted under the wing of A Pakistan Air Force Mirage III fighter. Design of the air-to-air IRST, now in production, began in 1992 and was first tested in 1994. The 2.4m long installation , including a stabilizer head in a 210mm diameter supersonic housing, weighs 80kg and draws its power from the host aircraft. It has an RS-422 interface , the output being presented on a 3.5 kg electroluminescent display in the cockpit. For post mission analysis, the pod can also be connected to a 14kg mission recorder installed in the nose of the aircraft. The system is designed to be used against airborne threats, and has a multi-target search capability. The pilot can choose from three scan patterns, including spiral (26x26), horizontal (9.6x100), and vertical (100x9.6) scans. A target tracking function is also avilable, and the IRST's modular design allows for deployment on various platforms, including rotary-wing types. (06/11/98)

This development is very old and there have been no updates on this project.

I would like to know that why hasn't PAC been able to integrate an IRST in JF-17 when the technology already exists and can be improved ???

Both are old pics and i had posted them years back in the forum.

The one recently got reported of being build under a JV witha european firm is different and we so far have no picture of that yet

Read my post again bro.. i said a new pod.. not the same one..

Both pods have the exact same specs so either the news is false and they are the same or we got ToT and produced them at home or we reversed engineered it !!!

Read the news cutting... tech/system demonstrator.. photo by AWC.

Not everything needs to be updated.
No current need for IRST on JF-17 till PAF achieve 100 aircraft. The purpose is not to lose the basic requirement for this project i.e. replacement of Mirage/F-7s. Such systems are not so difficult to integrate these days, especially when various options and resources are on the table for integration.

Why waste an extra hardpoint when we can get do a JV on something like Selex Raven ES-05 ???

@Najam Khan

When we are already doing a JV with the same company then why not so it for something like that ^^^^ ?

Sir i think the moral of the story is tht we had the capability in the 90s... so i guess the recent news about a new pod developed with assistance from some "european firm" does hold water..

Sir on one hand you guys talk about just meeting the local requirement and on the other you talk about aggressive marketing.

The Market for single engine 4th++ Generation has lately been dominated by Gripen which clearly disproves PAC's idea that a low cost aircraft will attract customers so i think that it is time that we start equipping the Thunder's with such systems so that it can challenge Gripen at it's full capacity !!!

It's not necessary that we equip our Aircrafts with such systems but we certainly need to offer an export variant with these systems.

I was there to see and touch this plane in Le Bourget. But one has to remember that what was shown was not the product PAF got. They (Sagem) showed options that other customers could buy. We did not buy everything clearly.
