What's new

$3 billion from Saudi Arabia to the Lebanese National Army

I wasn't speaking about the interests of Lebanon.

And KSA isn't perfect, I wonder what this 'extensive research' was made up of?

Probably the USA did it for them? A plan to destroy another Arabic country?

Interesting logic :)
Suffice to say we STRONGLY NO(ed) the invasion of Iraq, while others begged and cooperated with the so-called great Satan of theirs.

Off you go....

Off you go....

Has nothing to do with Iraq big guy.

Okay that's better.

Sample of the Iraqi Mugahideen fighting infidels in Syria

Look at the Gaza Strip, a government without much funding yet security and law and order is so organized there.

The solution is not just money and equipment.

Palestinian security forces in Gaza are ill equipped yet know how to deal with security matters better than their Arabic neighbors.

You don't Lebanon well and Saudi Arabia isn't playing for the benefit of Lebanon it's to lash out at Iran.

Gaza is filled with terrorists " ones attacking Sinai " , drug dealers and thieves , what the hell are you talking about . Most of stolen cars in Sinai , Suez and Ismaelia end up in your beloved Gaza until the tunnels were destroyed recently car theft in Sinai surprisingly went down .

Leclerc tanks maneuvering in Lebanon on behalf of UNIFIL
Michel Cabirol | 31/12/2013, 7:30 - 891 words
Saudi Arabia has decided to contribute to Lebanon with three billion dollars to strengthen his army with French equipment. A boon or a poisoned chalice for Paris, which must find a delicate balance in a volatile region.
Certainly a gift, but a poisoned chalice. Arm because Lebanon is not easy as the region is a powder keg. And all Lebanon, a small multi-confessional country of 10,450 km ², equivalent to the largest French metropolitan department, Gironde, is wedged between two hereditary enemy states, Israel and Syria, which monitor very closely happens in their small neighbor.

The Israelis, who regularly violate Lebanese airspace in flagrant violation of resolution 1701 of the UN, generally oppose the provision of arms to Lebanon lest these materials falling into the hands of Hezbollah, which would bring more than ten thousand militiamen. In addition, a Lebanese army better equipped complicate a little new Israeli military intervention in Lebanon if by chance this was the case.

Saudi Arabia has decided to contribute to Lebanon with three billion dollars (2.18 billion euros) to strengthen his army, which could thus acquire the equipment from France , said Sunday the Lebanese President Michel Suleiman . "(The King) suggested that these weapons be acquired from France, and quickly" , he has said. France is ready to respond to all requests for supply of military equipment to the Lebanese army.

A bad precedent
France does not have the easy part so even if François Hollande has promised to answer all Lebanese demands. " I have relationships with President Sleiman (...) and if there are requests made to us, we will satisfy " , said François Hollande after his meeting Sunday with King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia during his visit to the Kingdom.

But there is still one year France was reluctant to honor a promise made in 2010 Nicolas Sarkozy to the Lebanese , who asked HOT antitank missiles (MBDA) to arm the eight Gazelle attack helicopters (Eurocopter). Israeli authorities had repeatedly asked France to cancel the delivery, considering that these missiles could fall into the hands of Hezbollah.

As Tel Aviv had lobbied with success to prevent the supply of ten Russian MiG-29 in Beirut, which has no fleet of fighter jets to deter Israel from its incursions into Lebanese airspace.Syria also opposed to the acquisition of French missiles taken from stocks of the French army, the only manufacturer MBDA most. HOT missiles had their heyday in the French army ... during the first Gulf War in 1991.

What traffic equipment for the Lebanese army?
Clearly, the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), which have 75,000 men, including 45,000 to 60,000 in the ground forces need everything. Everything must be rebuilt. Their annual budget amounting to 412 million euros, 80% spent on operating expenses, does not allow them to afford the latest equipment. However, "no question of selling them Rafale" , says one in Paris at "La Tribune" .

France could thus provide Leclerc used modernized tanks thus would return to Lebanon after serving in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). In September 2006, France had sent Leclerc but also guns, armored infantry fighting vehicles (VBCIs) Nexter, a lighting and investigation squadron, equipped LAV, anti-aircraft missiles very Mistral short range (MBDA) and Cobra radar (EADS, Thales, Lockheed Martin).

All this equipment fitted to the Force Commander Reserve (FCR), the French troops majority able to act in less than three hours for the benefit of all troops deployed throughout the action area of UNIFIL. Equipment that could be a good basis to equip the Lebanese army. Why not also tactical missiles MMP (medium range missile) MBDA? Finally, Renault Trucks Defense, which is modernizing more than 80 VAB could strengthen the Lebanese park. "All this shopping list is consistent," says one to the Ministry of Defence.

Adroit patrol in the Lebanese Navy
Lebanon also needs transport helicopters and attack. Eurocopter could provide Caracal (EC225) or NH90, which Paris is seeking to reduce the target. As for the Tiger. The France does grant an export authorization (CIEEMG) for this type of material or she merely sell Fennec, a lightweight and versatile military aircraft based on the AS350 Ecureuil AS355 Ecureuil 2 and (Twin )?

In the Lebanese navy, the Germans are very present, DCNS, which has already submitted its patrol l'Adroit, is the sale of three vessels of this type to defend offshore oil installations Lebanese face appetite Israel , Cyprus and Turkey . Or more with the help of Saudi Arabia. Why not a military corvette Gowind kind. Lebanon also needs radar station along the coast to communicate with platforms offshore.
3 milliards de dollars d'armes au Liban : une aubaine ou un cadeau empoisonné pour la France ?

It is the French who will benefit first aid announced 3 billion provided by the Saudis to the Lebanese army. According to President Michel Suleiman, the country will spend this aid in the purchase of heavy weapons in France, according to the will of the monarch. " The King of the United fraternal 'sSaudi Arabia offers this generous support and valued $ 3 billion to build the capacity of the Lebanese army " , he has said, adding that " His Highness suggested that weapons are bought in France and quickly. "Frequent visits to France the Minister of Foreign Affairs Saud al-Faisal and the Chief IntelligenceBandar Bin Sultan left already provide such a reconciliation of France with this new " partner of choice " Middle East.

At the same time, on 29 and 30 December, the French President François Hollande met King Abdullah in Riyadh and confirmed by signing the agreement with Saudi partners, the announcement of the Lebanese president. An exceptional sign arms deal was actually the first priority of the French President in this visit. France wants to capitalize on the current cooling of relations between Riyadh and Washington to take some of the arms market hitherto dominated by Americans. In the last decade, more than 70 billion dollars, in fact, been invested in the purchase of weapons by the various oil emirates and kingdoms.

For François Hollande who, in France, the greatest difficulties to fulfill the promise made to the French coast and whose credibility needs to be boosted gradually supplant the Americans in this market is all the more important in view of a disengagement Washington crises in the Middle East and Central Asia-they are primarily responsible - and an agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue.

Regarding Lebanon, the French President and King Abdullah also discussed more specifically the "protection and stability" in Lebanon - François Hollande has called for " respect for the constitutional deadlines , "referring to the presidential election scheduled for May 2014 - and support the informal group " Friends of Lebanon "French initiative at the last General Assembly of the UN in September. International support group in Lebanon is supposed to be structured around the P5 +1 (U.S., Russia, China, United Kingdom and France, plus Germany, which since 2006 are in charge of negotiating the nuclear issue with Iran) , the EU and the Arab League to lobby for Lebanon in the areas of refugee assistance and it is not a coincidence, support the armed forces.

So after ingested in the Syrian conflict by supporting the rebels and mercenaries Islamist Wahhabi trend, determined to overthrow the secular regime of Bashar al-Assad and impose their law, and opposing any negotiated solution, the France led by the French Socialist Party, an ally of Saudi Arabia and "unwavering ally" of Israel - evidenced by the recent visit of French President - continues its reactionary international strategy now interfering in Lebanon via Saudi Arabia, which is placed in a strong position relative to the Lebanese army face Shiite Iran and Hezbollah, also allies of Syria.

The growing jihadist now extends from Afghanistan to Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, North Africa and the Sahara with Mali and Chad. So irresponsible, and without consulting the French Socialists to power in France does not intend to sell on Syria and Saudi Arabia share with the conviction that "there is no political solution "if President Bashar al-Assad will not leave power, as reiterated by the French president publicly on several occasions during his visit to Saudi Arabia.

Attempts to sabotage the Geneva Conference on the Iranian nuclear by the French socialist government are only a means to gain time to impose "the" Syrian leader credible, capable of unanimity among all parties, the Russians particularly. According to Laurent Fabius, French Minister of Foreign Affairs, the French president will require, at the opening of negotiations in Geneva 2, which should open on January 22, the Syrian opposition participating in the negotiations, including his protégé Ahmed Jarba, head of the National Coalition of opposition and revolution (CNFOR) since July 2013.

Who is Ahmed Jarba?

Hitherto unknown to the majority of Syrians, Ahmed Jarba comes from a Bedouin tribe in the province of Hassaké, belonging to the powerful Shammar confederation which extends in Iraq, Saudi Arabia - King Abdullah's mother is Chammar - and Syria. Particularly conservative although himself claims to be a "secularist" (sic) tribe. After two stays in Syrian prisons for non-political reasons, he lives in Saudi Arabia, where he maintains close relations with the secret services of the kingdom. He uses his special relationship with the Saudi regime to negotiate the purchase of weapons in the Croatian stock and the Balkans in particular. It is close to General Salim Idriss, head of the Free Syrian Army, is said today fleeing jihadist groups close to al-Qaeda, who accompanied him on his travels Paris. Received with great pomp in the French capital last July, Ahmed Jarba is a Knight of the French Legion of Honor, nothing less! He benefit of French arms sales "emergency" in Lebanon to arm his rebel comrades? One can imagine.

As for Iran, at the center of discussions between Francois Hollande and King Abdullah, the negotiations on the Iranian nuclear disturb the two capitals. Paris is committed to informing King Abdullah on the progress of discussions between the P5 +1 and Iran, a role played by Washington so far. It is true that the secret negotiations for eight months between the U.S. and Iran to the nose and beard Riyadh in Oman neighbor were particularly angered the Saudi monarch. François Hollande is now regarded by the Saudis as the best Western ally in the face of "Shiite axis" formed by Iran, Syria and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

France will she rewarded his loyal services rendered to the Saudi kingdom? King Abdullah, in fact, given instructions even before the arrival of French President on economic agreements representing a value of over $ 550 billion over the next ten years, including the delivery of nuclear reactors to weapons and infrastructure. Although they are slow to ratify an agreement already concluded (the MK3 agreement) but not yet signed by the king, the Saudis should buy new Rattlesnake missiles worth € 2.4 millliards and sign an agreement for a value of € 2.4 billion for maintenance and renovation of air defense structures.

The contract on the sale of heavy weapons in Lebanon paid by Saudi Arabia, where will the French Thales group out of its crisis, is in the context of a possible confrontation with Iran and Hezbollah. More than ever, the French Socialist leaders play the sorcerer's apprentice without worrying about the consequences and without the lessons of previous conflicts in the region and they are among the main actors from the Gulf War against Iraq in 1991.

France proposed, they won the contract.

That is the thing;
I have seen the french work, and I have seen them work in Saudi.
I know no one wins any business "Fairly" ; there is some behind the scene maneuvering involved.
But the french take it to another level altogether.

Yes, let us waste billions on conflicts that does not concern us. Let others fight their own wars. Seriously.

Anyway who cares? Let them "rule" tiny Southern Lebanon for 1000 more years. Like we should care.

What do we gain from this?

We should look for our immediate region first let alone home.

I ask again:
When was the last time a country donated anything to KSA?

WE HAVE NO OBLIGATIONS TO ANYONE.
ksa is going about things wrongly. a better way will be to build a fund and invest in these countries..that way you will gain money and get diplomatic strength too

Smart move by Salman. A yamen like raid on Hezb isnt possible in Lebnon. But the key to strenght of Hezb is the weakness of Labnonese army. A stronger state force would mean lesser space for militia like hezb. If hezb tries to resist that would mean similar to what happened in Yamen and open the door for yamen like strike against Hezb.

They are much more an natural ally and vital country than tiny Lebanon which is not even a neighbor. I don't think I need to talk about the ancient historical ties, cultural ties, religious ties, ancestral (first of all) etc. Basically half of all Saudi Arabians have ancestral ties to Yemen.

The current government is an ally. The Houthi cult not who form a tiny part of the "powers" in Yemen. Anyway this was just an example of those failed donations.

The money, far too many times, have been misspent wrongly.

In this instance as well since this will matter very little.

Syria is burning and are those that need it the most if the government wants to act like Santa Claus to non-neigbhors.
well if thats true than saudis did a terrible job there. one of the poorest and neglected counties in gulf.
all the saudis need was to invest 5-10 billion dollars there and job done. they would have gotten back there money in coming year too

3 billions simply trying to remove Hezbollah or start a war again in within lebanon that is the main deal here
it is all politics and powerplay
