Arundhati says Cong is double-faced on Maoists

Much to the abusive language of Indians about her or about the Maoists, the Indian Government thinks otherwise about the maoists and they dont want to initiate any operation against them.

So why dont you suggest some solution to the problem instead of shooting the messenger.

Are u suggesting that to me??

Well Maoists deserves no sympathy as they have no value for human life and are hellbound to destroy the basic infrastructures like schools, hospitals and constantly destroy trains and all. They are efficient as they operate from jungles and have good weaponry. They are no ordinary people and they terrorize people.

My suggestion is enough is enough and fight fire with fire.

I seriously wish some one affected by the Maoists puts a case against her in the courts or more simply puts a bullet in her head.

Well that's not our culture. I would rather say that we save the bullet for the Maoists. A few words from her is not gonna damage anything.

“Can we leave the bauxite in the mountain?”

Mumbai: There exists an entire spectrum of resistance, which includes the Maoist movement, asking serious questions about democracy and civilisation, not just of our government, but of our planet, author Arundhati Roy said here on Wednesday.

Ms. Roy was giving a talk on the Indian state's War on People, organised by the Committee for Protection of Democratic Rights. While stating that she was on the side of insurgency, Ms. Roy said, “I don't defend the killing of innocent people by anybody. ‘Do you believe in violence,' is a brain-dead question.”

“There is a whole biodiversity of resistance and the Maoists are at one end. While they might differ in their methods, they agree on one thing. This massive sale [of land and resources] is just not on. At the heart of this problem is land. This insurrection is asking serious questions. It's questioning the meaning of democracy and civilisation. These questions have been asked before, but in universities and seminars. But now hundreds of millions of people are asking these questions. That is the beauty of this resistance,” she said. While the Maoist movement has the strategy for resistance, it lacks the vision for a state; a vision which allows our mountains and rivers to be. The “radical question” to ask and which she wished to ask Maoists was: “Can we leave the bauxite in the mountain?” She was referring to the bauxite in Orissa, which is worth $4 trillion and its mining potential.

“They [Maoists] don't believe in privatisation, but in state capitalism. You cannot say we will do eco-friendly mining. It needs tremendous amount of water and power. There needs to be a serious conversation [in the resistance movement on this]. We can't betray the causes we are fighting for.”

The government, when it followed the neo-liberal agenda had opened “two locks.” One to the Indian market and another to the Babri Masjid, sowing the seeds of capitalism and Hindu fundamentalism, she said.

Ms. Roy said the state, through its pursuit of economic agenda, had unleashed violence in the form of “a war” upon its own citizens by displacing them in millions and stripping them of their resources.

“This economic totalitarianism can only be achieved through an armed state. The middle class and the media are fighting for an armed state,” she said.

“Why does the government need this war? The government inflates the meaning of Maoist to include anybody who is refusing to surrender their land or resources. What makes it so urgent for the government to fight this war? The media say corrupt politicians have so much money, but never expose where the money comes from.”

Answering questions on development in Adivasi areas, she said: “Policies like the NREGA [since renamed Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act] are like crumbs. You take away everything from them and then you say be happy with it.”

To a question by documentary filmmaker Anand Patwardhan on the recent Jnaneshwari train tragedy, Ms. Roy said if Maoists attacked civilians, this would indeed erode their support base. “But they have the people's support. You have to be careful of an atrocity-based analysis. All of us talk [assuming] they don't have mass support,” she said.

Referring to her article in a news magazine recently on her visit to Dantewada, Ms. Roy said she was happy when “accused” of romanticism.

“I believe in the romance of the revolution. I believe in the romanticism of the forest. We don't have a government; we only have a corporate state now,” she said.

Constitution violated

Leading democratic rights activist Gautam Navlakha also spoke at the event. “It is not the Maoists who are going against the law, it is the Government of India which is violating its own Constitution. War is directed against any resistance.” He emphasised that the Maoists were left with no real option than to take up arms. “What are we telling them? Either surrender your land or pick up arms. What do you think they will do?”

Questioning the lack of space for dissent, he said: “If I support their cause, I can be hauled up by the state under Section 39 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act [used against pro-Naxals]. So here I am, in a way challenging the state,” he said.

“The problem is we have stopped asking fundamental questions. Do we ask why are they raising this war? Why has armed revolution become acceptable among the tribals? Government reports themselves admit that the task of land reforms is still unfinished. The glass is not half full or half empty, but two-third empty. Eighty per cent population is at the receiving end,” he said.

Indian Maoists need to learn important lessons from their Nepalese counterparts. “They should first establish military power and only then bargain their position. In Nepal, 80 per cent Legislature consists of Maoists, but look at the difficulties that are created for them.”

He refuted any claim that Indians are by nature non-violent. “We are a bunch of hypocrites. When there is armed conflict going on in 235 districts out of 636, how can we say that the country is peaceful? If 47 per cent of our children are malnourished, isn't that violence? Isn't it criminal?”

“We need to look more carefully at government policies. Maoists can't be judged on the crimes that they have done, but on the background of atrocities against them. We have to say no to war against people,” he concluded.

The usual BS, the govt has already initiated operation green hunt against them, hence the spike in violence from them.

About shooting the messenger, I've read your posts on Nadeem Paracha articles, so thanks but no thanks for the double faced advice.

This clearly implies Mr Nadeem Paracha lost his grounds thats why he came up with this piece as always to defend himself. Otherwise Mr Paracha the Dawn has given equal time to you as well to continue dishing out your unchallenged monologues that too no on in front of you But too bad you were busy showing off your costly lap top too cheap man

I would have supported Mr Paracha only if every second write of his was any different than usual rhetoric which ends up every time at bashing Islam and Zaid Hamid.

This paranoid attitude of Mr Paracha has made his writing redundant and a sane person would like to notice that.

Mr Paracha you are so much sick that you even do not spare people who support views of mr Zaid.

This Paracha man has even stooped to so low that he dragged Ali Azmat and the famouse fashion Designer Maria B into his write up (which by the way was on music and not on Zaid hamid) But still this man Paracha had dragged the poor souls just because one was hosting a program on Iqbal and the other was having some praise for Mr Zaid.

Check all his write ups and you will fins each and everyone of it contain anti-Islam propaganda or anti-Zaid Hamid.

And oh i remember this man has also praised the terrorists for hijacking Pakistani plane to Kabul.

Ahemmm!! I heard someone saying about Shooting the message and not the messenger!!!
Was that by any chance yourself Miss Jana?!

I wonder why so many people take her seriously. She is as Venkaih Naidu would put it "a janda in search of an agenda". When India went nuclear, she disowned the country and made a theatrical renunciation of her citizenship in a column of a British newspaper. She, then forgetting her renunciation of her citizenship joined the Narmada andolan & began showing fascist tendencies, at one point telling Amir Khan that he could only join if he stopped advertising for Coke which is another one of her per hates. Who was she to tell anyone what to do & what was the connection between the Dam & Coke? Nobody questioned her seriously. She got a chance to stand up for her beliefs when she was sentenced to 15 days imprisonment by the Supreme court for contempt if she refused to pay a fine. She spent one day(which was compulsory),paid the fine & scampered out. So much for the strength of her convictions. She is a bit like the "Sania Mirza" of the literature circuit. Win something once & spend the rest of your life living on publicity that you keep generating with your antics. If she felt so much for the tribal way of life, why doesn't she go & live with them instead of jetsetting the world making money from her "Globalised" writing when she rants against globalisation at every available opportunity.

For all those romanticising the lives of tribals, my advice would to be to stand for elections promising people that they would get no roads, no water, no electricity, no jobs & that they could all live like nature intended. Let's see how many seats they win with that manifesto.

@Karthic Sri
Would like you to delete the remark about putting a bullet in her head. Such talk has no place in a country hoping to call itself civilised. That is more akin to the Maoist philosophy where they want to put a bullet(s) in the head of everyone who disagrees with them.

Guys we should thank AR. She is the one who is making our job easy. She should continue speaking like this and more and more people would be against this naxal/mao or any other such -ism.

Moreover these all are failed ideologies. (Though naxals/maos are not following them either). In India, more and more people are against these.

It is not 80% population at receiving end. Even by AR's admission, it is somehow 40% region. That too is flawed. As these areas does not include densely populated regions. Also India has more than 30% of middle class only. Leave upper class, even lower middle class is not giving a sh!t about it. It just a small fraction of lower class people who are taken away by these goons, that too mostly by terror tactics. One should also understand there is difference between presence and influence. If one naxal is caught from delhi it does not mean entire delhi should be added as naxal infested area.

Simply awsome !!!

We are such a hypocrites, we laud and back "navi's" in avatar against big corporations who root them out of their homelands for mineral wealth but when it comes to tribals in our own country who are in similar situation as navi's, we want them to be thrown out of their home lands or kill them if they take up arms. I am not supporting maoist movement or its ideology but did support them taking up arms when someone takes upon their land forcefully.

Please come out of hollywood.
The world is a much more complex place than seen on silver screen.
And BTW the minerals on wich the tribals are sitting on are national resources..if they(minerals) are to be exploited for the good of the country then they have to be.The forests are not the hereditary properties of the tribals.
But the important thing is Govt should give them a house somewer else, employement in the industries there, provide adequate infrastructure like current, roads, hospitals, schools etc.
If that is provided then i see no harm in taking the mineral rich lands for the good of the nation after giving a equal compensation to them(Tribals).

If everyone had thought that this is my land then hw come the National highways, dams etc could have come up.?

FYI my ancestral land was also taken for a NH constructed in my city ..does that mean i should take a AK and go abt shooting ppl.?

Maoists are terrorists much alike your own in FATA and NWFP but with a different ideology (they are not religious fanatics) and the only way to deal with them is to taking them down with gun shots.

Why didn't you advised the same to GOP and Army then directing it towards us? We already have our share of Arundhati's don't need more...

I think Miss Arundhati Roy should be invited to speak in an indoor auditorium with all the family members of those killed in maoist attack in the audience and all the exits locked.

Then she should exploit all the freedom of speech to the fullest.

What will happen then? Gurus any guesses any insights...

What moronic comments some of you make. You can't seem to counter her points and hence engage in attacking her. Sad really. Are you people 10? Or did you learn your debating skills in the BJP school of stupidity?

About what she said, one may not agree with her, but one supports her right to say it. It is important in a democracy.

PS - The article by humblehobbes was enlightening, far better than that hackjob by IBN.

“The problem is we have stopped asking fundamental questions. Do we ask why are they raising this war? Why has armed revolution become acceptable among the tribals? Government reports themselves admit that the task of land reforms is still unfinished. The glass is not half full or half empty, but two-third empty. I happen to agree with this. Anyone who doesn't want to sell their land to corporate houses is being termed a Naxal. If they protest, they are shot. What is going on in the countryside is quite despicable. People like those protesting Operation Greenhunt are required in these times.

The rest about State capitalism of the Maoists as opposed to Corporate capitalism of the government is ludicrous. Yes Bauxite is there and yes it needs to be mined, (Unlike what Arundhati Roy seems to be saying) but only for the benefit of the people of this country, especially the Tribals, and not some foreign corporation like the government seems to be planning.

Arundhati Roy is my favourite Indian woman and second to her is Pankaj Mishra, they both say things that I like to hear.

I am releived that they were not born in my country otherwise I would deeply despise them and issue a fatwa on their heads.

We have Hoodhboy, every writer of Dawn, Express Tribune and many more but they speak the truth and it hurts me.

The fact of the matter is that truth hurts. The failings of the government is cause of all problems, curse the government and not the informer.

@Nemesis

I think you are a moron.

You don't fight with the state with the gun even though the state is wrong.

You fight with the state on principles and through protests, boycotts, debates, legislation, elections etc.

The same was done my Gandhi, Nelson mandela, Martin luther king, Ang Sang Sui kee and many mores.

Miss Roy should lead the movement instead of supporting violence.

Pathetic champagne drinking smoking wannabe socialist that whats miss Roy is.
