Austalian athletes 'treated like cattle' CWG

Chef de mission Steve Moneghetti says Australian athletes were "treated like cattle" when forced to wait in a tunnel in 40-plus degree conditions to march in the opening ceremony.

Normally diplomatic Moneghetti lashed out at event organisers and warned that the health of the athletes were at risk in such conditions.

"I was very, very disappointed with the way that the event staff conducted the ceremony and with total disregard for athlete welfare,'' Moneghetti said.

"So extreme, that the athletes have lost confidence with the event organisers.

"It will impact on future Australian athletes' involvement at the opening ceremony."



The big team contingent arrived to the main stadium around 4.30pm local time and waited in muggy conditions under marquees on the warm-up track.

Moneghetti said they were supplied with drinks and a meal until they were ushered into a tunnel under the stadium around 6.25pm and made to endure a horrendous wait until the team entered the official ceremony around 7.25pm.

"That's one hour in absolute cauldron conditions," he said.

"In fact, it was so bad they held us at a point that was very, very hot.

"It was unbearably hot so we pushed forward. We pushed and we pushed about 50 metres which was even hotter."

Event staff then arrived and told the athletes to remain but Moneghetti said the team defied the order.

"We revolted, rioted and moved another 50 metres forward to which we entered an area that had reverse air conditioning, so it was hotter," he said.

"It was over 40 degrees without a doubt. We were treated like cattle. It was disgraceful."

As previous host to the Commonwealth Games, Australia was the first team to enter the arena but that also meant they were among the teams positioned in the tunnel for the longest period.

"Being first wasn't the ideal place to be," Moneghetti said.

He did not raise the issue the day after the opening ceremony because he wanted to first speak to the Organising Committee (OC) for the Games.

He said his complaint was primarily with the event staff but did say it was the OC's ultimate responsibility.

I saw some footage on the news, it was terrible. Most of the athletes were soaked in sweat, some British athletes collapsed with heat exhaustion.

It isn't just Australia that is complaining, all other countries athletes were treated like this, and considering what was done to them, they have EVERY right to complain. They should not have been treated like this.

There is nothing like "Good Enough" for some people. They will always keep complaining about something or the other even if the host tries with all its might to provide the best to its guests.

Still, if there is some problem, the organisers need to solve it out. They are here & its our responsibility to keep them happy & content.

Well, I think that all athletes precipitate quite a lot because of the physical exercise they do. I'm not sure that any athlete, who trains so hard physically, collapses so easily.. They aren't that weak, are they..?
But nevertheless, there can't be any excuse for faults. If they were not comfortable, the organisers should take appropriate measures to make sure it does not happen next time.
