Anything from the avalanche site?

This is the latest update from ISPR:

Despite weather hazards, rescue operation at Gayari Sector continues at five priority points identified with the help of SPD team employed alongwith plant equipment, Army Search and Rescue Teams.

A 450 meters long access track has been developed on the avalanche to access the priority points. Work on another access track has also been started to widen search perimeter.

Mainly Plant equipment is employed at two points. The work is in progress at rapid speed on both points.

At the work on other three points mainly being done with the help of infantry troops who resort to manual digging with some assistance from plant equipment where required.

A Dozer has been employed to restore the water channel, which has been blocked due to avalanche. So far two exists are available with 20 and 15 cusecs discharge. Efforts are in hand to enhance same with the help of plant equipment.

Siachen rescue work focuses on 5 points | DAWN.COM

Experts say there is little chance of finding any survivors at the place which is at an altitude of around 4,000 metres.

Despite harsh conditions, the military said efforts had intensified, with 452 people, including 69 civilians, taking part — up from 286 late on Monday — aided by mechanical earth movers, bulldozers and excavators, and work was focusing on certain key areas.

“Five points have been identified on the site where rescue work is in progress,” it said in a statement.

“Two points are being dug with equipment while three points are being dug manually.”

Photographs released by the military showed diggers and rescuers at work on an almost featureless expanse of dirty grey snow and ice, with no trace visible of the camp that had been the 6th Northern Light Infantry headquarters.

The number of those believed missing in the disaster rose to 138 as the military released an updated list naming 127 soldiers and 11 civilians.

They include a lieutenant colonel, a major and a captain.

Manzoor Hussain, president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, said the camp had probably been hit by a chunk of glacier that split from the main mass.

He said there was “no possibility” of anyone surviving and warned efforts to find those buried under the mass of snow using specialist equipment would become harder.

“It is becoming difficult to locate people through thermal imagery camera and infra-red system because by now probably there would be no body temperature under the snow,” he told AFP.

Col (retd) Sher Khan, a mountaineering expert, suggested the devastation might have been caused by a landslide rather than an avalanche.

“For me it was a huge landslide provoked by a cloud burst, not an avalanche. In this case a huge flood of water is coming down from the sky and creates a lot of mud and loose earth on the mountain. Mostly boulders, mud and water ran down the mountain.”

He said several days of freezing temperatures would have hardened the mass of snow, mud and boulders, making digging more difficult.

Specialist teams from the United States, Switzerland and Germany have arrived in the country to help with the search.

A security official said the US team had not reached the site due to poor weather and ten foreign experts were waiting for weather clearance to proceed to Gyari.

According to the Met Office, snowfall is expected in Siachen and adjoining areas over the next two days. —AFP/PPI

Here are some excerpts from a five year old study, conducted by a Pakistani hydrologist, which shed some light on the environmental issues:

1. Mr Abbasi compared satellite images of the glacier's snout between 1978 and 2006 as part of a study for the Worldwide Fund for Nature in Pakistan last year. He found the rate of retreat far more dramatic than the annual 30m to 34m previously reported.

"The images suggest the glacier has been retreating at around 110 metres a year over the period studied. This is all due to human activity"

2. Among human activities that have caused the retreat, Mr Abbasi cited troop deployments, daily military flights to the world's highest helipad, kerosene and diesel fumes, lorry movements and the dumping of chemical and human waste.

3. Mr Abbasi's 2007 study found that Siachen had lost 35 per cent of its volume over the previous 20 years.

4. We have lost a substantial amount of glacial mass as a result of huge infrastructure development by both armies on either side of the ridge. "This has led not only to the creation of glacial lakes and snow hole formations, it's responsible for destructive snow avalanches on both sides of the Saltoro ridge.

War zone's melting glacier a 'colossal' risk - The National

Glacier has lost much of its structure over the last decades?
Most of it can be attributed to global warming..Its happening everywhere. But some of it can be linked directly to the human presence there. But losing 35% of a mountain Glacier is too much

they will do whatever it takes to retrieve our comrades regardless of the risks

The Pakistan Army takes care of its own and it always will, no holds barred.
Ummm my statement was based on the context of ground realities.Hopefully you're aware of how rescue team's work.

Hopefully the rescue team's will find survivor's....that's the only thing that will keep them going !

Safriz,

I could find the original post of your video so am giving some input in this post,

The wall that you are referring to is called "Terminal moraine".It is made up of loose debri material and has no role in holding up a glacier.

The less steep part on the top of glacier is called "Firn field" and it is a zone of accumulation where snow accumulated during winter.

The comparative steeper parts are called "Ice falls" and there are crevasses present in it which leads to detachment of parts of glacier and lead to avalanches.Avalanches are also caused by accumulated snow on medium slopes. On steep slopes snow does not accumulate while on planer slopes there is no energy to propel an avalanche.

Since this is a glacier,it must have detached at one of it's crevasse.

Glacier are not static like some people imagine them but are constantly moving like a river of snow.

A contributing factor to this avalanche may have been lubrication of Glacier base by melting water which seeps down via a crevasse.(This is nearly guarranted as this avalanche took place in summers).

A Glacial avalanche is always massive. It is a rare phenomenon in occurence but its size is small compared to most glacial avalanches.

Soldiers who would have been caught in open during this avalanche have no hope of surviving. They would have been dead by now due to either hypothermia or asphyxiation. But if the building have survived an avalanche than there is still hope for those trapped inside as there would be enough oxygen and snow itself is a good insulator thus if a person is not is contact with snow and there is enough large air pocket, the person may well survive.

I think i have read enough..I am no more optimistic..May Allah show us a Miracle..

With these words,i will leave this thread.....

"In flakes of snow they rest
mountains shall bow in respect
In valley of white a roar has crept
Soldiers they were As Conquerors they slept
"

cmon guys i know chances are low and its a fools hope but they arent dead yet... i am being hopeful and i know its foolish optimism considering the frost bites and the lack of oxygen and being buried under the snow still i hope there will be survivors and i pray that our brave defenders would still be alive

To be fair, I think the process of true grieving will start only with the recovery of the bodies. That will still take some time given the enormity and nature of the task to recover them.

Brother u r so much convinced that thr r only bodies and nobody is alive !!

God is up there to decide... so let him decide the faith of these brothers instead of making ur own claims :)

While speaking to my contact in the ISPR, I could hear in the back ground, some media persons being requested to omit the word "buried" while reporting and asked to use the term "trapped" instead.
In the hearts of heart, there is still a glimmer of hope.

this surely goes out for Bro VCheng too ... Our religon has also taught us not to loose hope so y r u again and again telling to be ready for worst ... Man dont make ppl loose hopes...u are not watchng the News ??? thr families are hopeful, they still have hopes !! Army has hopes , Nation has hopes...

and for ur point... we are not cowards, we can face facts and when it will come to (God Forbid) worst , ppl will accept it but rite now u r requested not to request the people to loose hope :) Thankyou

I understand having hope but, there is such a thing as false hope - we must be prepared for bad news now.
