Sixth generation fighter aircraft: rise of the F/A-XX - Airforce Technology

The tail-less twin-engine stealth fighter design comes in "manned and unmanned options as possibilities per the US Navy,"

Financial... Well technical in terms of those birds not meeting bloated expectations (they are damn good, but their expectations were even better...)

Russia/China have less bureaucracy. If a project needs funding a couple of heads of state will decide on it. In the US you need to follow a process, approvals and then **** off some other budget head from where you'd pull the funding to satisfy this project.

Moreover US's is financially volatile compared to China at least which has been on the up and up. US is doing better right now than say 2 years ago, but its as good as the next big debt crisis. A handful of these birds won't make a difference in a long drawn out war. Especially if we see US vs Russia or US vs China (as unlikely it may be) scenario.

What about F-22?

How many financial problems do you see? Especially for the Chinese? Also zero.

You admit that US designs are "damn good" but since the expectation were "even better" that is somehow a failure? An analysis of any major US warplane program will show that any shortfall in performance is used to study and improve the technology until it meets or exceeds the initial expectations. This process of evaluation and improvement is proven to deliver results, and many other nations follow this process too. The funding decisions that you describe may be convenient and simple due to the autocratic overtones in other countries, but the US system of checks and balances has been proven to deliver good results too.

Being at the forefront of any technology is never cheap or easy, but the rewards are commensurate with the chances of failure. You can say that two space shuttle disasters were costly failures, but you can also see that the whole program was a success and have placed US at the leader in space technologies in many ways.

Financially, I would wager that USA is still in a much better place than any of its competitors, including China. You may be correct in saying that China is progressing rapidly, but it will take several decades to catch up, at least. I would also say that USA needs a kick in the pants to improve its financial performance, and that kick will be delivered when China comes close in challenging USA. Then it will be the start of Cold War 2, but who will win that I do not know.

It would be quite boring without manned AC anymore. Pilots will miss the thrill of flying and acrobatic maneuvers. War and blood shed will become much more savagery as lives will be ruined by video game players.

There will always be manned aircraft for thrilling pilots and spectators, but manned warplanes as we know them today may or may exist for much longer.

That is what I don't like. Also look at the casualties the advance countries can inflict on inferior nations when the risk of losing soldiers won't be there. Cyber warfare will become very prominent , most likely at the forefront of any war.

nuclear powered and it got all kind of rocket factory inside.. so it can fly for years and drop bomb countless :chilli:

Uh...no

I think this is the last generation the fighter pilot would keep his job. 7th Gen on wards, pilots will be a rare thing.

Hmm...completely unmanned and advanced war planes would be technically possible in the post 7th generation era. But there would be ethical matters.

When we merely use machines to make war instead of dedicated men and women, then war would simply become a game for others.

Welcome to 21st century warfare.

So it's more ethical to kill people, when people could solve their differences by just playing a very large-scale game of chess. :D

Sixth gen should not have pilots! It should be a UAV jet fighter!

Interesting design, more interesting would be the tech to provide yaw stability in a tail less plane.

They already did it with the B-2.

But B-2 is a heavy bomber, I wonder how they're gonna make a manoeuvrable fighter without a tail.

What about F-22?

Hope you are not comparing Pak Fa and J-20 with F-22..its in the other league..thats why its damn costly too..you should compare these jets with F-35..there are hypes all around about F-35 about inferiority of this jets.but nobody actually know any proper technical info about Pak Fa and J-20 too..
