China's new aircraft carrier no threat to power balance: Russian expert

China's first aircraft carrier, which set out on a low-profile sea trial Wednesday, will not shift the balance of power in the Asia-Pacific region, a Russian expert says.

The vessel, the former Soviet aircraft carrier Varyag, has been totally refitted for its new role as a platform for research and training.

Ruslan Pukhov, president of the Moscow Strategy and Technologies Analysis Center, told Xinhua that a single aircraft carrier does not alter the power balance in the region.

"It is a matter of both national pride and security," Pukhov said, adding that the aircraft carrier shows that the Chinese Navy has been developing.

He noted that China has long sought an aircraft carrier as it was the only permanent member of the UN Security Council that had no such warship.

The United States, Britain, France, Russia, Spain, Italy, India, Brazil and Thailand operate a total of 21 aircraft carriers around the world.

The Russian expert pointed out it could be hard to make a aircraft carrier into a feasible combat ship.

"Varyag cannot be used for combat operations as it has been obsolete. Chinese military say they are going to use it mostly as a training vessel. Even though, more efforts are still needed," Pukhov said.

He said warfare-ready aircraft carriers would likely appear in China over the next 15 to 20 years if Beijing does not abandon the program.

He said Russia supports China in a number of military programs, including refitting the carrier.

"Russia is China's only neighbor which bothers the least about growth of Chinese navy might," Pukhov said. "Russia has not been intending to expand its own aircraft carriers fleet or to increase its presence in the global ocean."

You guys trust what the Russian say!? They refer China AC is still harmless to others meanwhile its meaning object is a striking weapon, the Russian mean China Navy is still weak and the World no need to worry about that too much!!!

Trust me, the Russian are very kindhearted to brother Chinese!!!

This carrier is only good for training and at best for bullying nation-states that has no navies. Either naval power like Japan or South Korea can take it out easy enough.

And by "easy enough" you mean saturating it with anti ship missiles while their launchers are exposed to attacks by aircraft or missiles. They would not be able to sink the carrier in a single missile strike.

Any country with anti ship missiles can take out any carrier, given that the number of missiles fired is great enough.

What make you think those things are 'exposed' in the beginning? Speaking from extensive experience?

Now the oil price drops again, so Russia has no intention to develop the carrier.

What makes you think those things would not be destroyed before they could launch their payload? And what makes you think the carrier would get into range of those things in the first place? China does not need a carrier in a potential conflict with Japan or South Korea.

They are concealed? They are mobile?

That is not the point for now, which is that against naval powers like South Korea or Japan, even though neither have their own aircraft carriers, their 'regular' navies are experienced enough, especially when they are allied with the world's premier aircraft carriers equipped power: US, they can deter China's single carrier from entering any conflict.

Just as The british were relieved of there delusion last century about the same time the US empire will be relieved of it delusion that it alone has the God given right to police the world.

Congratulations :china:

hope to see this friendly ship at Gwadar for some nice friendly drills.:pakistan::china::sniper:

What drills are you expecting to do with an aircraft carrier mate? The doctrine to train with AC are totally different from other warship maneuvers. Besides, that carrier was refurbished to actually stand guard of China's east coast. That's going to be their flagship--- you don't send flagships for port calls unless they just become one of many like US Navy.

The carrier is not the only asset that will be deployed against SK and Japan. They will need to get past diesel-electric and nuclear submarines, destroyers, frigates, ground based aircraft, and long range missiles as well.

In all these aspects, China dominates SK and Japan in tonnage, detection range, geographic location and logistics.

Yeh like its that easy for anyone to send there AC when there are U.s ACs in near by locations not in the near future mate. but one day it will come to gawader and we will both go there with our camera's and have a photo shootout what do you say :pakistan::china::smitten:

Maybe in 10-15 years when china has nuclear powered carriers and has the experience!
