IAF hopes to build its own combat aircraft within 20 years

The Indian Air Force (IAF) dreams of developing its own combat aircraft in 20 years. At least that is what IAF chief NAK Browne hopes, given the fact that the Air Force has acquired significant expertise in overhaul and upgrade of aircraft.

"The 14 base repair depots (BRDs) have grown in both capability and capacity in a manner that the day is not far when it will be able to develop its own medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA)," Browne said at a press conference in Delhi on Friday.

While the IAF has successfully upgraded Russian MiG-29 fighters at its Nashik-based Ozar facility, the BRD in Chandigarh is the state-of-the-art facility for overhaul of Mi-17 choppers - the backbone of helicopter fleet.

Similarly, the base repair depot in Kanpur is working on An-32 transport aircraft and Viper engines used in Kiran intermediate jet trainers.

"I hope it's a dream but 20 years from now we should produce MMRCA kind of aircraft," Browne said.

The remark is significant as India has struggled to develop its own aircraft over the years. The LCA project has been going on for several decades, and it is not before two years that the homegrown Tejas aircraft will be ready for induction into the IAF.

At a time when the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, which does all the licensed production of foreign aircraft for the IAF, is unable to absorb technology to the satisfaction of the Air Force, the BRDs are carrying out work more efficiently.

Air Force officials said the state-of-the-art facilities developed at these facilities will prove to be a major strength in the coming years.

The HAL's wastage rate is at least five times that of other aircraft manufacturers in the world, they said. The IAF is maintaining a large and divergent fleet ranging from Jaguars and Mirages to ageing transporters and helicopters.

The maintenance of these aircraft have been a challenge for the Air Force. The IAF is inducting several new platforms in the coming years, including 126 French Rafale medium multi-role combat aircraft for which talks are underway.

What is AMCA then? Anyways I was a bit confused when they said just because they are overhauling some engines they would be able to build a multirole fighter and not talking about the technical advancement.

If India will do after 20 Years......then Pakistan has already started the whole production of J-17 (Despite the matter of technology transfer from China).........What will be PAF after 20 years....making generation 5 aircrafts..:ashamed:

Buddy is JF-17 a true multirole fighter? I thought its for point defense.

1.) First thing first its not 20 yeaqrs after but within 20 years.

2.)Its not India will do after 20 years we are already having LCA within 2 years, so India having its own in next 2 years only.

3.) The news is about IAf that our air force is getting state of the art technology, know how and infrastructure that they can build combat aircraft within 20 years.

4.) In plain words we can have 3 separate manufacturers HAL, NAL and IAF :smokin:

LCA in two years, finally. Hearing about it since decades.

well brother the Delay in LCA was more becuase of Babu/IAF top Brass & neta Love for "foriegn maal" and they kept on changing the goal posts for LCA so they could make the "upper cut" in the big defence deals but they over did it and result is they ran owt of time and LCA grew up into a true Multi Role Light Fighter which was concieved first as a Point defnce Light Fighter to fill the gap

now its freezed that LCA 2 will have GE414 american engines Indo-Israeli ASEA & EW suits and some French stuff = best of all the worlds whats more LCA has taught us the mistakes we did in the past and it brought a great shame to IAF/HAL/DRDO & MOD for delay they will be highly cautious not to repeat it again ...hope u get the point

Guys don't misunderstand, the IAF chief was talking about making aircrafts designed by Indian Air Force themselves. LCA is something ADA and HAL is gonna make according to the requirements of IAF. What we are looking forward is IAF designing their own aircrafts in their own facilities.

Even that is absurd, I dont know where an air-force has designed an aircraft other than giving requirements. we know IN has DND which designs ships but never heard any airforce designed a plane technically.

Time to appoint 3 or 4 iaf officers to hal director board.
Also appoint more iaf engineers to work in important hal projects.

If I am not wrong,Pakistan Air Force did play a direct role in the design of their Jf-17.Hope some pakistani member, will confirm it @Oscar @Aeronaut
