New Delhi: The Indian Navy has decided to admit women into its elite special forces, allowing them to serve as commandos for the first time in any of the three defence services, senior officials familiar with the matter said on Sunday, Hindustan Times reported.

The army, navy, and air force special forces are made up of some of the strongest soldiers who go through rigorous training, are capable of staging a rapid and stealthy response in the prohibited territories, and have thus far been a male preserve.

“Women in the navy can now become marine commandos (Marcos) if they choose to and meet the criteria. It’s truly a watershed in India’s military history. But no one is directly assigned to special forces units. People have to volunteer for it,” an unnamed senior naval official was reported saying by Hindustan Times.

According to a second official, the option of volunteering to become Marcos will be available to both female officers and sailors who will join the service as Agniveers next year.

The Marcos have been trained for a variety of tasks and can operate on land, sea, and air.

These commandos can carry out covert strikes on enemy warships, offshore installations, and other key assets, as well as specialised diving operations and observation and reconnaissance missions to support naval operations.

They can even fight terrorists in a maritime setting and have been used in counter-terrorism operations in Kashmir's Wular lake area.

Women are now welcome in all branches of the navy, from special operations to aviation to vessel duties. It has evolved into a completely gender-neutral force. There is no shortage of opportunity if a person has what it takes.

The opening of the navy's special forces wing to women comes as the force prepares to induct women into the personnel below officer rank (PBOR) cadre for the first time.

The navy is keeping a tight eye on the training of its first class of Agniveers, which includes women, at the INS Chilka training facility in Odisha. The navy's first batch of Agniveers included 341 women among the 3,000 recruits.

not sure what to make of this... 😐

Good decision by India. After all if female soldiers can and apply for and pass selection for the US Green Berets, I’m sure Indian women in the Navy can join your special forces too.

Green Berets are SF. Having been a soldier in the British Army, I’ve seen women take on roles that would have been banned to women even in the UK in the 70’s….

what do you mean marvel comics?

FYI

Maybe I'm just oldschool, wouldn't put them in situations like certain SFs are trained to, on shore hostage rescue, surveillance within borders maybe.. not sure tbh, kinda mixed feelings about the whole thing.. all for empowerment, but there's enough of us to do what sometimes must be done.

Yeah, this is all that remained for the females in India who live in the most misogynist society in human history but they are allowed the opportunity to join these Marcos to protect the same system and culture that commits atrocities against fellow females and protects the most extreme Capitalist, feudalist and anti-human political, social and socio-economic systems. Indian female citizens who read this news and are going to get all nationalist and decide to join the Marcos to kill the terrorists ( Muslims including Kashmiris ) and enemy countries ( Pakistan, China and whichever that NATO command orders ) must instead ditch that join plan and enlist in progressive movements in their cities because Indians suffer not because of Pakistanis, Chinese, Iraqis, North Koreans and Libyans but because the 3000-year-old "Indian" system has presented this tragic case right on this page. A young Indian man suffering from disease and social boycott because he doesn't have money to have that deformity removed and because many Indians will worship an ugly-looking dead stone idol but will boycott him, a living human and not enable free healthcare for him or speak for abolition of money system entire that is keeping him in this state :( :

I'm all for inclusion of women in every area in the armed forces. But in my humble opinion women aren't suitable for such roles as it is physically demanding and biologically they cannot match men for such roles.

Well, women, like men, should demand for end of war coming through abolition of militaries that comes through dissolving of national borders and abolition of the State and adoption of Communism by all former nations. What should exist are police forces because there still will remain psychopaths and remnants of religious ritualists. But overall humanity on Earth will become serene and evolved.

no problem with women in Sf if they have to match up to the same criteria as men

Govts of today usually try to solve hot topics or topics by influential people. Who will care for the poor or weak ones?
Govts are busy making flyovers, and airports and buying weapons, but no one cares about rising living costs, which are affecting the poor and weak.

That's the truth, live with it man.

I was just watching a video of US Army Sniper School. They say even though it's open to women, only 1 woman has ever graduated from that. Keep in mind it's not as intense as SF training. The dropout rate is around 50% as compared to 80%-90% of your average special force.

Besides, the training regimen is always softened for women in the military or other uniformed services. Would love to hear otherwise from feminists on that.

That's just nature, they're nwot geared for those kinds of combat situations. Some, understandably want to prove they're just as tough, others may feel a sense of duty and patriotism, or whatever drives one to the forces in the first place, but SF is insane, only even a small % of males from any given population will make it through.. huge hulky active duty guys drop like flies during selection all the time. It is absurd to expect them to keep up physically with the men.. and even if a small handful make it, to throw them into the fire of a real op is insane.

None of which is to say they should not work, stay home, and look after the kids.. aadmi ka bhi ek role hota hai, not about better or worse..

also, imagine a bunch of women SF going on a murderous rapey pillagy rampage through some random village forcing their way with men and shooting at civvies and kids.

these ladies ever come for me, I'll gladly yield
