No Australian uranium for Pakistan:
Gillard

Jan 13, 2012, 10.38PM IST IANS

SYDNEY:

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has
reiterated that Australia will not agree to export uranium to Pakistan, which is
imploring Canberra to make a similar
policy change as done recently for India.

This policy is an exception which
recognises the compelling rationale and
national interest for a change in relation
to India only, Gillard told IANS in an
interview. "In the case of Pakistan, the issue does not arise as it does not have an exemption from the Nuclear Suppliers Group," she said.

Gillard also indicated that the US might
have played a significant role in Australia overturning the ban on the sale of nuclear fuel to India. "Not selling uranium to India made sense when it was part of a widely-supported international strategy to bring New Delhi into the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)," she said in answer to a question about the primary reason behind the lifting of the ban. "But the US-India civil nuclear agreement of 2007 changed that strategy," Gillard added.
Against that background, it made little
sense for Australia to stand alone as a
country that would not consider nuclear
trade with India, said the country's first
woman prime minister.

Gillard has been lauded by some sections of the Australian media for the resolute posture she took while persuading the Labor National Conference to overturn the decades old ban on uranium exports to India. Australia does not sell uranium to nuclear power countries which have declined to sign the NPT. The exception made in India was not only due to the US prodding but also because of close links between the two prominent democracies, she said.

A number of Australian political observers have been criticising the ban for hampering the relations with India. Australia and India have strong and deep ties from trade and investment to
education and science, Gillard said. "We also share significant people -to- people links that underscore the closeness and warmth of our relations. "Yet, despite these links, in one important regard we had treated India differently in relation to selling uranium for peaceful purposes." The Labor Party has been debating the
uranium trading ban since 1977 but had
failed to reach consensus to allow any
such export till National Conference in
Sydney in December. There was a genuine, passionate debate around the issue, Gillard said. The lifting of the ban just over a month back has seen a perceptible change in attitude in New Delhi as far as Australia is concerned.

Gillard hoped that bilateral ties with
Australia's fourth largest trading partner
would continue to grow. "The breadth and potential of our relationship is enormous as we continue to strengthen our ties. Together, we have a bright future ahead in this Asian Century," she said.

Pak seeks parity in uranium
sale from Australia

Place: ISLAMABAD | Agency: PTI Pakistan today said it should be treated at par with India in civil nuclear cooperation and given the same facilities, including uranium sales by Australia, under a "non-discriminatory regime".
"We hope that facilities as available to
India will also be made available to Pakistan," Foreign Office spokesperson
Abdul Basit said during a weekly news
briefing.

He was responding to a question about
the Pakistan government's stand on
Australia's decision to sell uranium to
India. Pakistan has contended that the world community should give it access to civil nuclear technology to overcome a
crippling energy crisis ever since the US
finalised an atomic pact with India.

Basit said Pakistan had taken up with the Australian government the issue of
uranium sales to India. "As you all know, Pakistan has always tried for a non-discriminatory regime for cooperation in civilian nuclear technology," he said. He said Pakistan is an energy deficient
country whose energy needs have been
multiplying. We, therefore, strongly believe that these non-discriminatory approaches do not help and Pakistan will look forward to benefitting from nuclear technology for peaceful purposes," the spokesman said. Basit's remarks came hours after Australian Defence Minister Stephen Smith said during a visit to New Delhi that India represented a "unique" case for uranium sales.

This quote gives a straight answer to why Pakistan can't be given equal treatment.

Analysis:

Indian nuclear policy (including its nuclear doctrine) had been very clear ever since its first nuclear test in 1974.

On the other hand Pakistan has acted as a doubtful state. Its hidden nuclear capablity was uncovered by India in 1998 by a little provocation.

The clear cut stand of New Delhi against baised NPT/CTBT has earned India a respectable and ''Unique'' position among the NSG members.

But Pakistan has got its image tarnished time to time.
1> Reports showing increase in growth rate of warheads.
2> Finding of OBL in Abottabad.(No less than a Nuclear explosion)
3> Dr. A.Q. Khan and prolification to Libiya Iraq and Iran.
4> Support to terrorism as a proxy war.
5> Military rule and fragile democracy.
6> Undefined Nuclear Policy and First Use Doctrine.
The list continues...

Options before Pakistan:
1> Let it be like that...
2> Be friends with India and be a part of the Regional Grid(Presently India, Srilanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan) to meets its energy needs.

Why does pakistan always cries for equal treatment with india, and make themselves a laughing stock for world ?
You cannot buy same amount of stuff with 1 rs which you can with 100 rs. How difficult is this to understand ?

Lad you fail to understand, it's not about the money. Pakistan can afford uranium, no problem with that.
But lets say that the outside world's view of Pakistan isn't so great, historically India has been the democracy and is not seen as the aggressor, plus with most of Western world against us, we aren't likely to get Uranium from them.

Pakistanis seek parity with India on nuclear sales but obviously Pakistan can not be trusted!!

Nothing has damaged Pakistan's image more than its attempt at proliferating Nuclear weapons to Iran, North Korea, Libya for petty monetary gains..when caught ..they made AQ Khan the scapegoat ..but obviously nobody was fooled.

Simple- India is seen as a stable responsible nuclear power who is one of the few nuclear states with a no "first use" policy. Additionally India has separated its military nuclear applications (SFC) with its civilian ones. Whereas Pakistan has not separated the two and has been proven to be prolific distributor or nuclear equipment and materials and has stated numerous times how willing hey re to use their weapons in a first strike.

Asking for parity with India is not a good act. This shows Pakistan's obsession with India.

Dude you got it all wrong.
What i meant was whatever you can buy with brand name india, you cannot buy the same with the brand name pakistan. So why cry for it just becoz we are neighbours ? I know its not about money, when it comes to nuclear as your forefathers have famously accepted to eat grass for the same.

well we are working on it even though the world wont help us........ its a little difficult but we have our own reserves too and we can ask china for help with uranium and we are building another nuclear power plant so its cool i know our track record plus us ranting after every three days that pak nuclear is not safe but we managed before we can manage now
