Is Bangladesh becoming an autocracy?

Dude...

Have you any idea what a great economic and political position BD is currently in?

It took decades for BD to get to where it is now.

While Pakistan looks like it will drop to 2% per capita growth, BD is on target to surpass 7%. This is a massive 5% difference.
Let us see what will happen if say this difference is sustained for 25 years(one generation):

1.05^25 = 3.4.

This means that BD economy will be relatively 3.4 times larger than that of Pakistan than it is now. While Pakistan is still 3rd world, BD becomes a solid middle-income country.

You have no idea just how wildly different the economic trajectories of BD and Pakistan are at this moment.

Let Pakistan worry about its economy. What great political position is BD in? Surrounded on all sides by India they have very little to oppose India, that's your political dilemma. Just look at how hard it is for any opposition that is not pro-India.

They said the same about Malaysia under Mahathir first time round - today those views are obsolete.

Excellent for Bangladesh. What's the point of inane democracy if it's not giving the desired results. Democracy never works until a country and society has developed. Sheikh Hasina can be the female Lee Kuan Yew. We need a similar system like Bangladesh and make Imran Khan ruler for life if we have to survive as a country.

Let Imran Khan prove himself first - just having good intentions is not enough.

Yes there is a bit of autocracy in BD but it is necessary evil when you are a 3rd world country - no different to what happened in the 4 Asian "Tigers" at this stage of their development.

Bangladesh is a bona fide autocracy

Even squeaky clean Singapore was a de-facto 'autocracy' under Lee Kuan Yew, not to speak of Park Chung Hee in South Korea and the KMT for the 'Renegade Province' with one party rule. Autocracy is a necessary evil and political/fiscal discipline is an essential quality in a nascent rising economy. You take your pick of evils.

Just to provide one example, the recent cleanup of illegal land-encroachers around Dhaka's riverfront areas could not have take place in a hundred years if there was multi-party rule. Even ruling party MP's and UP members were summarily arrested, some jailed. There is no alternative to establishing strong law and order regime and 'danda'.

Bandhs, hartal, tire burnings and street demonstrations aren't exactly magnets for investment in a country.

I get the feeling that just every BD poster feels that Sheikh Hasina W is doing a great job at the moment, hence she is tolerated. As long as BD is growing, all is fine and sundry.

And the day her mission is completed we might get to see a dress rehearsal.

Just a honest question from an Assamese, is this really the situation in your country? My friends in your country tell me otherwise.

This is BAL narrative only.

They defend themselves or illegal govt. by showing not-so-great or normal development as 20x more development.

You can check the comments on development news in Bangla on Facebook for few months. You will get better idea.

LOL, and we have the same ole apologists here too....saying Singapore and South Korea and whatever else lol (ignoring the vastly different culture and ethic in play there....and multitude more examples of autocrat failure in developing world where it was not present).

Those Countries are a rarity and exception to rule in that they actually fixed their basic issues (before actually accelerating), whereas Bangladesh keeps delaying, making excuses and over-relying on BBS blah blah numbers (that correlate zero with consumption footprint).

Pakistan came up recently because it might be taken off the MSCI EM index, when I looked up the member list, Bangladesh is not even on it. Says a lot.
