Is ‘Make In India’ working? India to get leftovers as China challenges electronics manufacturing gia

It is changing very fast...just as the earlier case with Japan. From copying to innovation...
It's not, they're just buying things up like Foxconn wrt Sharp. The problem in IC & semiconductors is that there's a ton of patents that you can't work around, even if you do these things are too complex for others to copy. Like a modern Intel x86 chip or ARM, for mobiles. There's just no way around it, although Chinese companies, by buying some of these big firms, are learning how to make high value/quality items (like display panels) on their own. But there's no one getting close to the likes of Amazon, Google, Apple, Intel, Samsung, Sony anytime soon.

According to tech research firm Counterpoint, while phones are assembled domestically in India because of taxes on imported phones, locally made content in those phones is usually restricted to headphones and chargers - about 5 percent of a device’s cost.

This is ridiculous. India's Make in India Initiative was announced on sep, 2015. It is hardly 2.5 years since the programme started and the policies for electronic manufacturing in India came at later point of time and you expect the country to start manufactuting high end electronic components from day 1 ? We will climb the ladder eventually.

Right...need to know the huge difference in make in India initiative..and made in India(cannot see the fruition).

Also this is globalization, many Chinese companies and others in smart phones will set assembly plants in India to get the economy of scale, the local cost arbitration and all that, huge market, beat the tariffs and trade barriers.

Indian government is well aware of low local made content. And that news is now too old. Just two months back, changes in import duty for printed circuit board came into enforcement. And Foxxconn has responded by shifting assembly of PCB to India. It will bring local content in price to 15%.

Foxconn’s local printed circuit boards push to give Make in India a boost

Foxconn’s India arm stepped up its local manufacturing efforts by starting the assembly of printed circuit boards (PCBs), which will likely benefit clients such as Chinese phone company Xiaomi and HMD Global, the makers of Nokia devices, as it will give them a price advantage over rivals that have to pay duty on imported PCBs, widely expected to be levied from April.

PCBs make up about 50% of the cost of making a phone. South Korea’s Samsung is among the only major brand that assembles in India.

“They (Foxconn) have begun assembling PCBs in India,” said a person with knowledge of the development. Foxconn’s move is a boost for Make in India. India had raised basic customs duty (BCD) on smartphones to 20% in the Union Budget from 15% earlier, which became effective February 1. Import duties have acted as a catalyst for the establishment of nearly 120 mobile phone manufacturing companies since 2014. However, many of these were assembling handsets at less than 10% value addition.

Local Value Addition to Rise
With PCB assembly and manufacturing of some other components, local value addition is set to rise to 15%,analysts at Counterpoint Research said. Foxconn Technology Group said it “follows a strict company policy of not commenting on any matters related to current or potential customers, or any of their products.”

The world’s largest contract manufacturer, also the biggest contract manufacturer for phones in India, has acquired machinery that enables surface mounting on PCBs from the now-defunct Nokia plant in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai.

For once you need to wake up amd smell the coffee. More tham 100 assembly/manufacturing plants are established in India since the start of make in India campaign. India is impelementing a strategy of incremental tariff policy. From this year tariffs of PCB boards will kick in amd foxconn and other Indian companies will start manufacturing PCB's in India. Yes we dont have chip manufacturing facilities but then that is a long shot.we neex to increase our share in other ecosystems.

Pakistan also have these smart phone assembly companies. G'FIVE a mobile communication brand of GFIVE Group is the first-ever mobile manufacturing company in Pakistan. GFive is listed in top 10 in terms of global sales volume, has continued to hold the title of the fastest developing communication company.

..also

Haier will start operations for its first state of the art local manufacturing /assembling of mobile handsets unit in Pakistan from April 1, 2016, said Tahir Mushtaq Spokesperson of the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication.

..again these are all assembly units in Pakistan.

Believe me, we don't really need any Indians trust, and India doesn't mean everyone as you suggested.
Not according to your government. For quite some time China is harping India to join BRI. It went to the point of renaming CPEC to remove P from CPEC. India didn't budge. We know China cannot be trusted.

We know how the world sees us. And the las thing we care is what Indians think of us

A year into Donald Trump's presidency, global confidence in US leadership has fallen to a new low, according to an opinion survey conducted across 134 countries.

The Gallup poll puts global approval of US leadership at just 30%, slightly behind China on 31% and only three points ahead of Russia.

Actually Indian trust means a LOT in the word. We carry huge credibility in the world. What is known as "soft power".

No amount of "olympic gold" can replace the most fundamental of human emotion called "trust" and "trust worthiness". Its called "REPUTATION".

Your government does care a hell lot. Otherwise they wouldn't have been harping about India not joining BRI. BRI has been brought into disucssion from Chinese side so many times that we have lost count.

You trust means nothing to us, you don't trust us and we don't trust you, the feeling's mutual, you think too much about what India thinks affects this world. what US and China think may affect this world more than what India thinks.

True, but then why does China harps on India joining BRI? There is a reason why India will never join BRI, its trust deficit.

Again this all look like assembly and not tech. transfer and innovation(starting the assembly of printed circuit boards (PCBs), Foxconn, the Taiwanese giant will certainly go for make in India, with caveats though.
