Israel offers natural gas to India

Seems to me a lot of people here are missing 2 points:
1. No such thing as a "Palestine", yet.
2.This offer to actually sell gas to India, when Israel just started to discover their own natural resources after 60 years of no natural resources, is not as much about the gas than it is about selling it to a close friend to deepen the bonds between our two nations.

Practical question - how Israel will deliver to India? Syria, Turkey and Saudis will say no, article mentions Greece, but check the route - long pipeline under the sea, then Greece - Bulgaria - Romania - Ukraine - Russia will say no, therefore another under sea pipeline - Georgia - Azerbaijan - 3rd under sea pipeline (!) - Turkmenistan - Afghanistan - either Pakistan or China, either can say no.

Its massive distance, massive pain to get all countries to agree, and if just one country wants to cut India-Israel pipe off, they can do it. Or lets say happy Taliban in Afghanistan blows pipeline on the daily basis :azn: Even if such project would go live, it will take like a decade to get it done, and I wouldnt trust on its full safety after.

Report: Israel Offers to Export Natural Gas to India
Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz has offered to sell Israeli natural gas to India, the Times of India reports. According to the Times, Steinitz visited India last week and made the offer to Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon. The two governments are expected to set up a feasibility study to examine the proposal and when Indian Foreign Minister SM Krishna visits Israel in January, talks are expected to progress.

Report: Israel Offers to Export Natural Gas to India

---------- Post added at 09:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:41 PM ----------

Israel, which had been energy deficient for decades and locked in potentially unstable energy relationships with Arab countries that have been bitterly opposed to it, stumbled on a bonanza when huge quantities of natural gas were discovered off its northern coast. Gas is expected to start flowing from the Tamar field in 2013 and from the Leviathan in 2016. Varying estimates give Israel control over some 400 bcm of gas. It promises to reduce Israel's dependence on Arab states like Egypt and Jordan and offers the prospects of billions of dollars in revenue.

Israel has already started the process of picking out export routes to Europe, through Greece and Cyprus. In the east, energy-hungry India offers the best market that is also free from political troubles for both countries.

There is something called ship.

There is something called ship.

There is also a new technique of trapping it in ice and transporting it by ship after converting it to methane hydrate - this method is under research and is cheaper and safer.

Noble Energy Inc. (NBL) boosted the estimated amount of natural gas at the Leviathan prospect off the coast of Israel, its biggest find ever, after getting results from another appraisal well.

The company said the discovery holds an estimated gross mean resource of about 17 trillion cubic feet and may hold as much as 20 trillion cubic feet, according to a statement today. That gross mean estimate is 6.3 percent more than the 16 trillion cubic feet the Houston-based company announced last year.

“The reservoir thickness and quality were greater than anticipated,” Noble Energy said in the statement. The appraisal well, more than 3 miles (5 kilometers) east of the original discovery, was drilled to a depth of 17,146 feet (5,226 meters) in about 5,480 feet of water, according to the release.

Noble Energy operates Leviathan and holds a 39.66 percent interest. Delek Drilling LP and Avner Oil Exploration LLP (AVNRL) hold 22.67 percent stakes and Ratio Oil Exploration 1992 LP (RATIL) owns the remainder.

Do the math: India would receive how many LNG ships per year - 20 or so? Thats 0.0001% of Indians yearly consumption per ship, or 0.002% for 20 ships. Of course its better than nothing, but hardly any reason to cheer.

The only reasonable amount India receives through the pipes, and as my post above shows, its not happening either.

Yes, and India also signed deals with Russia, doesn't mean we are going to make a Pipe line from Russia to India. India is not just dependent on Israel for gas, you buy it where they sell, there is a large market no need to go after just one seller. If Israel fill a small percentage of India's energy demand then that mean that we have that much more fuel to use.

Majority of the natural gas produced in Malaysia is exported to Japan and Korea using LNG tankers. Its much shorter distance from israel to India as compared to Malaysia to Japan.
