Kalabagh Dam - Damn anti-Dam Lobbies

What exactly is the problem with Kalabagh Dam MK Sial.I don't know much about it's disadvantages.Could you please explain what will be the side effects of this dam in technical terms (Not Political)?

Kalabagh site is located at border of Khyber PK and Punjab. Reservoir of water shall be in Khyber PK whereas Power Station will be in Punjab.

Reservoir shall affect Khyber PK i.e. Noshehra city etc. may be affected.

Punjab has bad reputation because same is the situation in Ghazi Barotha Dam. Punjab gets all the royalties ... and income. But Khyber PK is only affected!

The water in Jackobabad is not Indus River Water I presume. Its the water from Bolan

No! It is perhaps Indus. Flood normally affects eastern banks but this time flood has gone to western sides of river. It may be due to damage of western side of "Torri" band near Ghousepur.

The issue is very simple:

#1
The DAM will be built some of the villages would get effected they will have to be moved , in Paktoon region - no problem these are mostly huts and sheds a new city can be built , its already distroyed now

My Village is probably the oldest that would come into the dam. Our elders have written numerous letters to mush government and others to please initiate the project. we are willing to go live else where for the sack of project despite the fact that this village is pretty historic.

Perhaps That area should be taken away from Punjab and should be made federal territory would that be a good option?

Yes this is the one of real issues that needs to be resolved. What I think that whole reservoir is not in KPK is just a portion. Definitely it is going to rise water table which may be a problem in close proximity of dam. what package be given to affected people. How flow of water be regulated up to satisfaction of lower riparian . What will be transparent tools for monitoring of water distribution. How trust be raised and maintained. These are few issues which needs to be addressed rest Nowshera will be drowned is all BS. I think we need many dams in addition to KB Dam.

Sir can you please elaborate your point.

Sir whats your opinion doing same with Terbela too.;)

Say NO to controversial Kalabagh dam in Punjab

- Please see the ground realities. Indus delta in Sindh is on verge of death for non-release of fresh water for several years as Punjab is not allowing to implement "Water Accord - 1991" in letter and spirit after 19 years of signing it.

- Man-made disaster in Indus delta resulted in mass migration of about one million of people resulting in tremendous increase of unemployment and poverty, ruination of environment, fauna and flora, tremendous decrease in sea food export loss to Pakistan in billions of rupees every year.

- Downstream Kotri to Aabian sea, about seven lakhs people are living but they are deprived of drinking water for them, their animals and lands.

- In the world, there are 74 deltas and in order to save deltas, fresh water is released in sea to push the sea water to back. No release of water in Sindh, resulted in sea intrusion resulting in inundating about 2.6 million acres of land.
The Sindh Govt has officially briefed to the Senate Committee headed by Senator Lashkari Raisani if situation of sea intrusation remain unchanged, historical city of Thatta and also Badin would disappear in next 20 years whereas sea intrusion is inundating 80 acres of land per day.

- The underground water in Punjab is sweet which is sufficient to meet its full agriculture requirement whereas Sindh's under ground water is brackish (70/80%) which can not be used for drinking as well as agriculture purpose.

- A N G Abbasi was chief of high-level Technical Committee on Water during Musharraf era, he reported that NO extra water from system is available for new dam.

- If water is available for new dam, why it is not being released downstream Kotri as envisaged in the Accord to release 10 MAF, till survey is conducted.

- Notorious WAPDA presented wrong figures about availability of water for new dam to favour Punjab and this was pointed in Abbasi Report.

- In the world, big dams are being decommissioned. About 15000 dams were removed so far including in USA, Spain, Thailand etc., because they were environmental hazardous.

- If pro-KBD are well-wisher to Pakistan, they should first demand to save Indus delta as it is in Pakistan but they are discarding it because it is in Sindh province in Pakistan and not in Punjab.

- Link canals (Flood) are in Punjab but Punjab unilaterally taking water of River Indus through it when there is scarcity of water in Sindh. Amazingly when there is current flood, the two flood canals are CLOSED. What a hypocrisy of Punjab.

When Sindh / Balochistan's shares of water is released from Taunsa / Chasma, Punjabi Chaudhries steal the water by using Lift Machines in thousands of numbers installed on both bank of River Indus in Punjab jurisdiction.

- Recently Punjabi chauvinist Shafqat Masood Janjua (Punjab Rep. in IRSA) in capacity of Acting chairman IRSA, used unconstitutional powers of Council of Common Interest (CCI) in connivance with fed minister for Power and Water (also from Punjab) but no action was taken against Punjabi chauvinist Shafqat Masood Janjua otherwise he would have been behind the bar for violating the Constitution and Raja Ashraf dismissed. Since both were Punjabis, they were above the Constitution.

- They are talking about cheap Hydel-power to find justification of Kalabagh dam. We can produce cheap electricity from gigantic Thar Coal deposits, sufficient to meet the power requirement of whole the country for eight centuries....I repeat eight centuries but Punjab and notorious WAPDA both creating problems.

- We can produce cheap electricity from Air, (Wind), Solar and Sea. Iran is ready to provide us electricity at the cheap rate of Rs 1.80 per unit whereas China has offered Rs 300/- per month per house but notorious WAPDA in connivance with Punjabi bureaucrats creating hindrances and staging conspiracies.

-When Punjab fills Manla, it is sowing season in Sindh. Sindh has asked many times to Punjab they may give them water as loan for 10-15 days so that they use for sowing season but Punjab had refused it. Please record.

- Flood water is never stored in dams like Kalabagh due to technical reason. Plz see statement of ex-IRSA Chairman Enayatullah Gabdapur (1993-1998) who while commenting on PM Gillani's statement told him, flood water is not stored in dams like Kalabagh due to its design as flood storing reservoirs have separate design.(plz see daily Times dated August 12, 2010). Meanwhile, PM Gillani for political reason is playing with the sentiments of the nation.

- In Pakistan dams are filled BEFORE monsoon season traditionally, therefore, flood water can not be stored in any dam in Pakistan in case we presume.

- There is long list of highhandess of Punjab in Pakistan.

SAVE INDUS DELTA....SAVE SINDH.....SAVE PAKISTAN.

Kalabagh Dam article on Wikipedia contains following line about Ghazi Barotha Dam

"The entire system and canal of Ghazi- Barotha hydro electric project runs in Khyber- Pakhtunkhwa, however the electricity generating turbines were installed just 500 meters inside Punjab so that the royalty is denied to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa."

There is another funny or serious point against Dams in Rural Sindh. Waddera ppl poor peasents ko ye bata ker bharrkate hain k Punjab aur PK hamare water se saari bijli nikaal lete hain ... therefore jo water sindh main aata hai that is not suitable for crops...!!!

Should we decimission Tarbela and other damms too for the sake of environment..Pakistan is a poor country. We can't afford to do stuff like this.We need power to first develop then invest in more expensive ways of generating electricity.

SAVE INDUS DELTA....SAVE SINDH....SAVE PAKISTAN....SAY NO TO KALABAGH DAM IN PUNJAB

Indus delta in Sindh (Pakistan) is on verge of unnatural demise due to man-made tactics being used by Punjab - another province of Pakistan.

Our elected President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani both have no interest to save Indus delta from ruination. What a shame!!
Ruination of Indus delta resulted in mass migration of one million people, degradation of land, tremendous increase in poverty and unemployment, environmental disaster, destruction of mangroves & flora and fauna, tremendous reduction in sea food export by Govt of Pakistan and much more!
Sea intrusion has resulted 2.6 million acres of land in Sindh inundated. This situation if remained unchanged, the historical city of Thatta and Badin two districts in Sindh would disappear within next 20 years as per briefing by Sindh Govt to the visiting Senate Committee on water headed by Senator Lashkari Raisani.

Punjab is not allowing to implement "Water Accord - 1991", 19 years after signing the Accord in which release of 10MAF water downstream Kotri is guaranteed to check sea intrusion and meet the drinking and other requirements of people living between Kotri and Arabian Sea.

All Organizations working for Human Rights and NGOs are requested to stop the highhandedness of Punjab as Punjab now wants to build Kalabagh dam to turn Sindh into desert.

Three out of four provincial assemblies have passed about 10 resolutions against construction of proposed Kalabagh dam in Punjab.

I appeal to the world and particularly NGOs and Human Rights Commissions to come forward and check highhandedness of Punjab against Sindh and take measures to save Indus delta from unnatural sad demise other it would be unnatural and environmental disaster in Sindh (Pakistan).

Also pressurize Govt of Pakistan not to ruin Indus delta to 'please' Punjab.

New "Yazids" in Pakistan

Those pro-KBD people who are calling release of water downstream Kotri in Sindh as WASTAGE, they forgot about 1.5 to 2 million people are living between Kotri and Arabian Sea. They need water for drinking and other purposes. Those who are opponent of release of water downstream Kotri to save Indus delta and meet necessary requirements of human beings, they are real enemies of Pakistan and Sindh. It is better to call them "Modern Yazids".
