M1A2 'Abrams' MBT gets ANOTHER upgrade | M1A2 SEP V4

While at it - they should get rid of the turbine engine and have a modern diesel powerplant. Turbines are maintenance intensive and have very low MTBF times. Too finicky to maintain.

They can get the Indian Arjun team subcontracted for this.

80 ton target weight will be achieved in no-time flat (just like the Arjun - a modified legacy Leopard) !!

With the price tags exceeding 10 millions, it looks fancy on paper but how many can a country procured, the tanks is ought to be the spearhead of the armored formation not individual superhero.
There should be a balance between price and quality.

i think its time to stop beating a dead horse. And they were mocking russia for upgrading old designs
I would imagine track proplems like the merkava and limited transport capability. Isnt practical

They tried to introduce the diesel engine. Not sure why it didn't work. But I agree that they need improve its fuel economy.


However not all is lost. Reminds me off the USAF taking forever to introduce the new engine for the B-52 because of cost but doesn't realize many decades later how fuel costs is going up. Same for tanks.


There was another engine that was going to replace the old AGT1500 engine but cost was a factor and that was like 20 years ago. It was suppose to give about 25% fuel efficiency while moving--50% fuel economy while just being idle or not moving but waiting. The new Abrams have the APU pack that helps fix that problem with tank consuming fuel while just being idle.

Engine upgrades have already delivered improved fuel economy, increased vehicle range, and increased durability.

Honeywell has been awarded a $1.1 billion, five-year base requirements contract by the US Army to extend its support for operational readiness of the M1 Abrams MBT.
The Total Integrated Engine Revitalization (TIGER) III contract includes an initial parts delivery order worth about $125 million for the AGT1500 gas turbine engine (pictured).
Dating from 2005, the TIGER programme is intended to improve AGT1500 operations and cut service costs, as a collaborative effort between Honeywell and the US Army (via its Abrams Project Management Office, the Tank-automotive and Armaments Command and the Anniston Army Depot).
According to Honeywell, recent upgrades to the AGT1500 engine under the TIGER programme provided improved fuel economy, increased vehicle range, and increased durability t’hat will allow the M1 Abrams to remain viable through the year 2040 and beyond’.
 
Maybe in future they can introduce a new longer gun like the L55 if needed.

ok..not what i hear from crew that operated the Abrams in Iraq. Our Aussie friends suffer more frequent overhauls because they insist upon using diesel instead of jet fuel. the turbine affords superior acceleration and quiet mobility, in the early days the engine suffered compressor stalls that caused severe vibrations requiring depot intervention, But those issues are long resolved so not sure why you claim reliability issues?

I believe that's a Canadian Leopard.

I don't think I have ever seen an Abrams covered in slat armor. Strykers definitely yes, Abrams not sure.

They did have that TUSK Urban survival kit but it's not really like the slat armor pictured above. The bars are for mounting armored plates not stopping a projectile.

Apart from the much better power to wight ratio, the Honeywell AGT 1500 engine can run on a huge variety of fuels, Gasoline, avgas, avcat, diesel, marine fuel, vegetable oil. This is a useful property on the battlefield

So they put heavy ERA in front of the side skirts and then they put extra armor in front of the ERA. That's that pretty heavy tank there! I love it.
