No 'Dhanush' for the Army?

The Army is desperately short of new long-range artillery having failed to induct any new gun after the Bofors scandal.
After placing an initial order of 114 indigenously-made Dhanush howitzers, there are doubts whether the Army will go ahead with the purchase even though a snag in the gun has been sorted out.

The Army is desperately short of new long-range artillery having failed to induct any new gun after the Bofors scandal.

The Dhanush is an upgraded version of the Swedish 155 mm Bofors howitzers bought by India in mid-1980s based on the original designs. It is a 155mm, 45-calibre gun with a maximum effective range of 38 km in salvo mode compared to the 39-calibre, 27-km range of the original guns. It is 80 per cent indigenous, with the APU (auxiliary power unit), electronic dial sights and few other small items being imported.

The Dhanush prototype suffered a barrel burst during firing trials at Pokhran in August last year, which has since been resolved.

An official with knowledge of the matter said. “It's true that the trial at Pokhran didn't go well. There was a barrel burst. However, it was later confirmed that the burst was not due to a defective barrel, rather the ammunition wobbled out-of-axis to exert additional pressure on the barrel, causing the accident”.

The official added that “the raw barrel was sent from the Metal & Steel factory, Ishapore, which is known amongst the ordnance factories for its quality barrel work”.

The army has placed an initial order for 114 guns and an expressed interest in procuring 300 additional howitzers. But after the initial enthusiasm, the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) is presently awaiting an indent from the Indian Army. The present lull may be an indication that the Army may be weighing other options of procuring howitzers.

Despite numerous efforts, Defence Ministry and Army officials were not available for comment.

I wonder if further trials were carried out by the army after that barrel burst? What were the results?

India army would get the Indian systems. NO, NO to foreign systems. Babus and and army officers earned a lot from these deals.
..don't worry..Manohar Parirkar will give some danda to corrupt Army general..unlike Antony..who was taken for a ride by some of the corrupt men.

Yes some, of the top generals need real danda. they are just playing with the tax payers money.

INDIAN ARMED FORCES HAVE TO BUY INDIAN MADE WEAPONS, GOOD OR BAD. THEY SHOULD NOT COMPETE WITH FOREIGN WEAPONS. IN ANY COUNTRY INDIGENOUS WEAPONS DON'T NEED TO FIGHT WITH FOREIGN DALALS, IN INDIA DRDO FIGHTS WITH EVERYONE TO BUY INDIAN.

This is pure hogwash, the IA have placed a firm order for 114 with a option for a further 300+ units. This is non-negotiable, I don't know what the motives are behind this news but t wouldn't be the first time the Indian media knowingly or unknowingly engaged in misinformation campaigns.

It cleared those trials but still my gut feeling, army will.end up with these gun in huge nos.

May be because BABA Kalyani offers ultra light Howitzers and one more, Tata is also offering one gun. All these 4 guns must be put to the test and best should be choosen.

Even the Israel guns had found some defects in barrels, only Boforce has such a good quality, Moreover DRDO needs to confirm that such thing does not happen including to care that some Corrupted officer does not derail the project, like in arjun it was said by one member that, some person intentionally add the dust in the engine, such thing need to be hanging of that Idiots who are acting as more like animals (or even worst then them).

Other than the electronics (like the digital ballistic computers,FCS,muzzel velocity radars etc) DRDO does not come into the picture when we are talking about Dhanush. It is largely an OFB project.

I think need to change the name too Dhanush is also missile.......... Pandits chage the name.
There is useful for the Mountains rather other areas, If TOT is possible we could built it over here.

Does DRDO is not concern or related to it?
