Pakistan will acquire 77 F-16s via the US

Tuesday, October 04, 2005 - Pakistan will buy 77 F-16 jets from the U.S. which Washington will acquire from a third country, after they are fitted with the state-of-the-art equipment, Islamabad's Ambassador to America Gen (retd) Jehangir Karamat said.

While the supply itself will be made by the U.S., the F-16s will be acquired from a third country. The upgrade and preparation of the equipment however, is to be carried out by Lockheed Martin.

According to Islamabad, the American government has already approved the deal and will present it to the U.S. Congress in October and November.

Islamabad's Ambassador also said that besides approving the F-16 deal with Pakistan, the U.S. would provide it with 20 state-of-the-art Cobra helicopters.

Last year, the U.S. had initially proposed to sell 24 F-16s, each costing around $40 million.

According to Karamat, Pakistan will be given two F-16s by December followed by supply of 20 in 2006 and the rest 55 in 2007.

The PAF, which has about 30 F-16s acquired in the 1980s, is currently modernising its aged fleet by buying used French-made Mirages as well as jointly producing the F-7 Thunder with China. The PAF has also procured several Mirage fighters from Libya.

These cobra's are additional's to the one's PA already has meaning the attack helicopter fleet of PA will come to 60 Cobra's PA might add some more cobra's later in the fleet besides these one's.

ONE Question since i dont know too much about helicopters whats the difference between a cobra and a super cobra..

Can you guys clarify how much Cobra's pakistan has in its inventory and how many apaches were going to get...Oh and what version of Cobra's do we have

This is great news. Pakistan Army's strength lies in it's armour and aviation corps unit. No doubt they are the best in South Asia.

Dear ALL - pls allow me to clarify on the Cobra's strength with the PAA.

Original order in mid-80s was for 20 attack helicopters. 19 are surviving.
according to DSCA website 40 attack helicopters were offered to PAA as EDA's (Excess defence articles). PAA was to pay for the upgrade to AH-1F standard.
20 attack helicopters are in the process of delivery (8-12 delivered by mid-2007) rest by mid-2008. TOTAL = 39
20 attack helicopters have been stripped down into spare parts and are being delivered to PAA as strategic spares stocks including engines.(remember the word: SANCTIONS)
PA is finally thinking smart.!
so total strength is 39 helis and not 60.

As far as i know (with whatever i have read), we currently have AH-1S helicopters while we are recieving upgraded AH-1F variant.

There is no sign of Super Cobra, and there is no need for it. Otherwise, AH-64D would have made much more sense. The United States army is upgrading its old ones to the standard of D model, so they can keep the company stay on for a while until a next generation helicopter (Cammanche? confirm?) comes in production.

UAE also has made the order of 36 or so. Opportunity existed, but Pakistan doesn't need it... nor do i believe we have huge requirements currently.
