Saudi Arabia apologises over beheading: Indonesia

Human rights groups say workers from countries like Indonesia, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka underpin the Gulf states' economies but face extreme forms of exploitation

JAKARTA: Saudi Arabia has apologised for failing to inform Indonesia about the beheading of a maid convicted of murdering her Saudi employer, Jakarta said Wednesday.

The apology came during a meeting between Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa and Saudi Ambassador Abdurrahman bin Mohammed Al-Khayyat, a foreign ministry spokesman said.

“The ambassador apologised and regretted the situation and said that such a thing wouldn’t happen again in future,” said spokesman Michael Tene.

Natalegawa also handed the ambassador a letter of protest to his Saudi counterpart, Tene said.

Indonesia earlier this week recalled its ambassador to Riyadh for consultations as lawmakers demanded a strong response to the execution, which was carried out with a sword.

Indonesian migrant worker Ruyati binti Sapubi, 54, was executed on Saturday after she was convicted of murdering her Saudi employer, Khairiya bint Hamid Mijlid, with a meat cleaver.

The maid carried out the killing after she was denied permission to leave the kingdom and return to her family in Indonesia, according to officials in Jakarta.

In a second case, a court in the Saudi capital of Riyadh had sentenced Indonesian maid Darsem to death for murdering her Yemeni employer in December 2007 in what she called an act of self-defence as the employer had tried to rape her.

Indonesian officials had said she could escape the sentence if she received pardon from the family, who forgave her in January on the condition that she pays the compensation or “diyat” of two million riyals ($533,000).

The Indonesian government will be paying the compensation ahead of July’s deadline, Tene said.

“The full amount had been transferred to the Indonesian embassy in Riyadh and a team from the Foreign Ministry will be flying there tonight to oversee the payment process. We hope her life will be spared,” he said.

Both women’s cases are the latest in a string of incidents involving Indonesian menial labourers in the Middle East.

Lawmakers on Tuesday urged the government to stop sending migrant workers abroad without agreements guaranteeing their basic rights.

Natalegawa and other key members of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s cabinet have faced calls to resign over the persistent abuse of Indonesian migrant workers abroad.

Around 70 percent of the 1.2 million Indonesians working in Saudi Arabia are domestic helpers, according to officials.

Human rights groups say workers from countries like Indonesia, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka underpin the Gulf states’ economies but face extreme forms of exploitation.

When I read the title I though KSA was apologizing for carrying out be headings.

Little did I realise that they were apologizing for not having informed Indonesia before loping off someones head.

This form of death penalty hasn't undergone a change ever since the beginning of time maybe. Surely they can find a less brutal way to do execute a death penalty.

Well its about time Indonesia starts throwing its weight around. Usually the govt. which pays the blood money and the person convicted is sent to the country of origin with no option of coming back.

But Indonesia's profile is pretty big now and this was a big mistake on SA's part. They should basically put a moratium on death penalties for foreigners especially the poor people and let their govt. arrange the blood money. Usually their families depend on their income and losing not just the income but a family member is just too much.

i hate that country to death, wish someone could blow those idiots back to the rattholes they deserve to live in!

beheading should be discouraged really, you can inject poison or something but beheading is a really brutal way.

when you kill someone you get killed .. that is the country's rules for ages . Everyone knows Sharia is our way of justice so if you do not like it simply do not come to Saudi or at least dont break anyone's skull with a Chopper knife .. end of discussion .

Sharia always will be there in our land .. you have no right to tell us whats right and whats wrong . and if theres going to be a change it wont be thank to you .. change do not come from the outside its from the inside .

One more thing .. the Indonesian govt is complaining about not receiving any information about the date of executing not the executing itself .. so whats that all about ?

i think its a stone-age practice that has no basis for existence in a modern, civilized world

but yes -- given that this is their law (regardless of how stupid some of us may think it is) then its best that these countries do not send domestic servants to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

violence and mistreatment of expat workers has been common in all the Persian Gulf countries for quite some time. unfortunately they are compelled to go because of work --which they send back to their families.

Indonesia has now banned all domestic servants from travelling to KSA for this reason, since there was much outrage over it

I do agree that ''change'' comes from inside, not the outside. The Saudis should at least have an agency or advocacy group for these foreign workers, so that if a crime is committed against them they can file complaints without fear of reprisal or threats.

LOL, the article headline sounds a bit funny, if you take it literally.

Sad story though.

And the women should allow the rapist to rape her... and should not act against the rapist. And that too she should do in presence of 4 male witnessess so that she can actually proove it. After all rape in any form is done in public....

You people are burden on humanity nothing more.

It is brutal for the one looking at it .. beheading cause instant death and will cut your brain from your body in less than a sec and you'd loose feeling of any hurt .. Google it or ask a doctor

well i guess it's hard to get feedback or ''reviews'' from people who have already been beheaded

I see another outsourcing opportunity here for the arabs sitting in their cozy harems...
Abu we Indians and Pakistanis can always prepare CREDITABLE reports about it and sell them over to them and make them believe that they are true.:lol:

nice story .. but no its wrong .

a rapist will face execution and you dont need 4 witnesses .. It is adultery that needs 4 witnesses .. which is having sex by choice and that is a whole different issue .

If the victim killed her rapist she won't be harm and it's ok and will count as a self defence .

So before talking about something please make sure you know what you talking about .
