South Africa has asked the Serum Institute of India to take back the one million COVID-19 vaccine doses the company had sent in early February, The Economic Times reported on Tuesday, a week after the country said it will put on hold use of AstraZeneca's shot in its vaccination program.

Serum Institute of India, which is producing AstraZeneca's shot, has emerged as a key vaccine supplier. One million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine landed in South Africa last week and another 500,000 were due to arrive in the next few weeks.

The company did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

South Africa's health minister has said the government may sell doses of AstraZeneca's vaccine, after the country paused its rollout following a small clinical trial that showed it offered minimal protection against mild to moderate illness from the 501Y.V2 coronavirus variant dominant in the country.

AstraZeneca has said its vaccine appeared to offer only limited protection against mild disease caused by the South African variant, based on data from a study by South Africa's University of the Witwatersrand and Oxford University.

The African country, which is yet to launch its COVID-19 vaccination program, has decided to start vaccinating health workers with Johnson & Johnson's vaccine in the form of an "implementation study" with researchers.

Do not make it as sensational news. We have people dying all over the place in this region and we at least realised that this vaccine wont work despite its high efficacy rate.

Johnson and Johnson is the one next choosen because of its ability to stop the variant now circulating.
South Africa never said there is a problem with the vaccines. They have a new strain for which existing vaccines don't work.

Going by past record you will not vaccinate pak people and call it 'smart vaccination'.
Correct....

That fellow who is stilling in Canada tends now to push out 'variant view' of the news.

It has nothing to do with the efficacy of the vaccine but to the current Cape Town variant that it is ineffecitve again. It does not mean that AstraZeneca wont tweak it further to correct the targeting for more variants as they evolve further.

These people want to take cheap shots at the expense of propaganda.

The AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine is currently being tweaked and a version will be ready by September that is effective against the S African and other similar variants.

S Africa is just following the science and needs to use a vaccine that has high efficacy in its own country. UK is fine to use the AstraZeneca vaccine as it has high efficacy(80%+) against the dominant strain in the UK.

Do you know when S Africa will get supplies of the the Johnson and Johnson vaccine?

My dad back home just registered himself to be vaccinated being over 65, as instructed by the Islamic republic of Pakistan.

Since India's western overlords are squabbling over effectiveness of AstraZeneca/Oxford here in Europe, it will be wise for Indian establishment to start bending backwards to the Chinese for their vaccine. I mean, its not something you lot are not familiar with, just did the same in Laddakh region, well experienced.

World needs Chinese, Russian vaccines to win war against COVID-19, says Macron - Xinhua | English.news.cn (xinhuanet.com)

I hope to god you aren't planning to give your dad the chinese vac. As for Indian vaccine plans, tell the world what you said about it with reard to pakistan and they will laugh at you.

Erdogan got it, and I believe Sissi got injected with Chinese vac as well. World leaders are eyeing Chinese Vac, even in Europe. Pay attention, and read what I write, plenty of education for your kind.

The joke is on India being the covid19 epicenter, feel sorry for your elders to be living in a pandemic ridden nation.

India is already at good level of "herd immunity" and their cases, hospitalisations and deaths have now collapsed from what they were last September.

Please stop this.

I suggest you take this personal bashing elsewhere.

This was expected and predicted. After totally mishandling response to Covid resulting in third highest number of deaths, Modi played with the lives of people outside of India by acting as savior with its vaccines. Astra/Zeneca might still have some efficacy being a licence produced drug but India’s own Covax is a farce. Soon enough the world will see it.

Horse crap.

Sinovac was approved effective in multiple age cohorts after reaching post-stage 2 trial validation, following a release schedule similar to other professionally trialled vaccines all over the world, barring one. Let's not regurgitate the embarrassing statements by VG Somani regarding premature distribution of Bharat vaccine "in clinical trial mode", followed by damage control statements declaring that the Bharat vaccine is actually only suitable as an emergency alternative in some circumstances - might as well toss a coin.

Multiple health care workers are on record in India as having been coerced into taking the Bharat vaccine "in clinical trial mode" and have been summarily silenced when taking their complaints to a higher authority. India's basic failure in medical ethics is actually what the world is laughing at. Even Indian origin doctors in UK are aghast at India's gung ho cavalierism, ostensibly overseen by BJP as a quasi-nationalistic exercise instead of the scientific one it was supposed to be.
