Karnataka – Police on Feb. 24 detained two Christian women in Chickmagalur after Hindu extremists filed a complaint of forcible conversion based solely on the women welcoming two new converts into their home. The Global Council of Indian Christians reported that the Hindu extremists saw a recent convert to Christianity identified only as Panamma and her daughter visit the home of Christians identified only as Sangamma and K.P. Mary. The Hindu nationalists filed the complaint against Mary and Sangamma at N.R. Pura police station, and the Christian women were in police custody for about two hours. A station officer who goes by only one name, Revannea, told Compass that an inquiry was made into the matter and the two women were released without charges after a warning not to undertake further evangelism.

Karnataka – Hindu extremists on Feb. 3 burned a Christian’s house and threatened to build a Hindu temple on his land in Tumpur. According to a local source, about 15 extremists went to the house of the Christian, identified only as Dasappa, on Feb. 1 and insisted that the area member of the legislative assembly was asking for the site for a Hindu temple. Dasappa refused, saying that the land was legally owned by his son, and the extremists asserted that there was no place for Christians in the area. On Feb. 3, the Hindu extremists went to his house again, splashed gas on it and burned it to ashes. Local Christian leaders filed a complaint, but police refused to register a case.

Karnataka – A group of Hindu extremists from the Bajrang Dal on Feb. 2 attacked a Christian truck driver in the Deralakatte area on the outskirts of the Mangalore. The Hindu newspaper reported that the extremists beat Albert D’Souza, 48, with iron rods after he found them breaking the windshield of his Jeep and marring the Christian stickers on it. D’Souza was brought to a city hospital in critical condition, the report stated. Konaje police registered a case, saying the attack was communally motivated, and arrested three of the five persons believed to be responsible for the assault.

Karnataka – Police on Jan. 27 arrested a pastor in Bangalore for alleged fraudulent conversion after Hindu extremists who assaulted him filed charges. The Global Council of Indian Christians reported that about 30 Hindu extremists led by Shiva Rame barged into the house of pastor G. Kiran Kumar of Bethesda Church and accused him of trying to convert children by luring them with free tuition and asserting that he had insulted Hindu deities. The extremists assaulted the pastor and his father and dragged them to the Vidyaranyapura police station. Surrounding the police station, they bullied officers into arresting the Christians, with pastor Kumar charged under sections 503 and 153(A) of the Indian Penal Code for “criminal intimidation” and “promoting enmity between groups on grounds of religion” respectively. The pastor was released on bail on Jan. 31.

Karnataka – Hindu extremists on Jan. 27 accused a pastor of conversion by allurement in Belgaum because he offered light refreshments at his house church on Christmas Day. The Global Council of Indian Christians reported that when the intolerant Hindus heard that pastor Tanaya Sunder Nayak served the refreshments at a prayer meeting of his house church last Christmas, they filed the complaint and manipulated police into going on a hunt for him. Arrest warrant in hand, police went to the pastor’s house while he was away. Umesh Pangam, area additional superintendent of police, told Compass that after an inquiry police realized there was no basis for the charges and dropped the case.

Violence against Christians in Karnataka:

Karnataka, July 10 (Compass Direct News) – About 10 extremists from a newly formed Hindu militant group, Ram Sena, on July 8 beat two Christian workers and paraded them half-naked to a police station for what an advocacy group called false charges of “hurting religious feelings” in Bangalore, Karnataka state. The extremists dragged the victims, identified as G. Mohan and M.G. John, out of the house of a Christian, Nanda Gopal, in the Wilson Garden area, and assaulted them, Dr. Sajan K. George of the Bangalore-based Global Council of Indian Christians told Compass. Police arrested the Christians for “hurting religious feelings” and “creating enmity between religious communities,” while the extremists went free. The Christians were later released on bail. The two independent workers meet in Gopal’s house every Sunday for worship.


Karnataka – Subhas Chalawadi, allegedly a member of the Hindu extremist Bajrang Dal, and 15 others beat Dyamappa Chalawadi and his wife Geetha on July 4 in Baloga village, Khanapur taluk, Belgaum district, Karnataka, according to the Global Council of Indian Christians (GCIC). Evangelist Santosh Basappa and a pastor from Trinity Church in Baloga were visiting the couple when the group led by Subhas Chalawadi barged into their home and dragged Dyamappa Chalawadi out. They kicked him and hit him with wooden sticks on the palms of his hands and soles of his feet. Some of the assailants pulled his wife by the hair and pushed her against the wall, and Basappa told Compass they grabbed her arm, hit her on the shoulders and back and told her, “We will kill you and your husband if you continue your Christian prayers.” Khanapur police refused to register a complaint from the couple, saying “there are no bleeding injuries,” said Dr. Sajan K. George of the GCIC. Dyamappa Chalawadi became a Christian in April, while his wife Geetha received Christ a year ago.

Karnataka – Hindu extremists allegedly belonging to the Bajrang Dal attacked Christians identified as C.J. Samuel and Pastor Moses on July 4 at Belthur, near Kadugodi, Bangalore, Karnataka, according to the Global Council of Indian Christians (GCIC). Pastors of the independent Pentecostal Atmanesar Church, Samuel and Moses were returning home from a Bible meeting in Belthur when a group of around 15 Hindu extremists waylaid them on a lonely dark stretch of road, the GCIC’s Dr. Sajan K. George told Compass. The extremists slapped and punched their heads, arms and legs and cursed their Christian faith, accusing the pastors of converting poor villagers to a foreign religion. More than 50 others joined the kicking and punching as the pastors writhed in pain on the ground. Local sources told Compass the assault lasted for nearly an hour, ending with the extremists threatening to kill them if they visited Belthur again. The pastors were admitted to Baptist Hospital for treatment of their injures. “The pastors are too terrified to lodge a complaint against the extremists for fear of reprisals, as the extremists made threats to their life,” George said.

Karnataka – “There is a great threat to the country owing to conversion initiated by Christians in the name of social service,” Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat, a leader of the Hindu extremist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), said on July 2, according to the Daijiworld News Network (DNN). Bhat was speaking at “an anti-conversion awareness” meeting organized by the Hindu extremist Hindu Janajagruti Vedike and Bajrang Dal in Kundapur. He claimed bias in newspaper reports by a journalist of Kundapur about an attack on priest Sylvester Pereira on June 25. “In the last 250 years, Christian missionaries have indulged in conversion through schools, orphanages, hospitals, etcetera,” Bhat said. “Hence, there is a great threat to Indian culture and thoughts.” The RSS leader also defended Ramanna Shetty, who assaulted Fr. Pereira. DNN quoted Krishna Prasad Adyantaya, managing trustee of Kollur temple in Karnataka, as praising Bajrang Dal leaders for foiling anti-Hindu acts of Christians. “Dara Singh, who burned Christian missionary [Graham] Staines [to death] at Orissa a few years ago, is a role model to us,” Adyantaya reportedly said. “There are many Dara Singhs in Kundapur who can foil the attempt to convert.” Hindu extremist Sangh Parivar leaders were also present on the dais.


Karnataka – Police in Mangalore region of Karnataka state’s Dakshina Kannada district disrupted the Sunday worship of an independent church, Jehovah Rapha Divine Centre, in Hosabetta area on July 1. They told the pastor, T.V. Chacko, to obtain permission to hold worship services from district authorities, Dr. Sajan K. George of the Global Council of Indian Christians told Compass. “The authorities are harassing Christians by misusing an order passed by it earlier this year,” George said. The Regulation of Public Gatherings (Dakshina Kannada) Order, implemented on March 20, 2007, requires prior permission for any “public gathering,” the definition of which includes worship services, from district authorities. The application for permission must be signed by at least three persons no fewer than three days prior to the proposed public gathering. But the order does not mention if the permission for a recurring gathering can be sought through a single, one-time application. The order was passed because “public gatherings were leading to law-and-order problems,” according to the district head, Maheshwar Rao. “Pastor Chacko has applied for permission to hold the worship service,” George added.

Karnataka – Hindu extremists on June 29 attacked a pastor involved in social developmental work and later filed a false police complaint against him in Sunderplaya village in Karnataka state’s Kolar district. The assailants beat the Rev. P. Ravi, pastor of an independent Pentecostal church who was assisting people in the Kolar Gold Field area, leaving him with internal injuries, said Dr. Sajan K. George of the Global Council of Indian Christians. “A day later, the extremists lodged a police complaint against the pastor, alleging that he was converting Hindus by ‘force’ and insulting Hindu gods,” George said. Police promptly arrested Rev. Ravi, and the extremists prevented his lawyers from contacting him. The pastor was finally released on bail the following day. George said police showed a “visible bias” in arresting Rev. Ravi and letting the attackers go free without charges.

I don't get why do people have this problem with conversions. Nobody can force anyone to believe in something they don't believe in. Nobody would convert if they were not interested in converting. Banning conversions is similar to telling people what they can and cannot believe in. Are you trying to stop people from expressing their ideas and what they believe in? That would be wrong too.

How does conversion from religion to atheism happen? That is conversion too. How would you ban someone from not believing something?

All this talk of banning conversions etc in India is plain old Talibanisation of Indian politics. It goes against our democratic ideals and infringes on personal freedom.

Hmmm do you even know that the 'conversion' in discussion id the coercive,market kind and not the real spiritual awakening ?

Coercion of the simple tribal,village folk by deriding the Hindu culture, denigrating Hindu gods as demons,threatening hell fire for not choosing the "path of light", giving cash for conversions, placing conversion as a criteria before giving Jesus' wonder medicine (paracetamol) for common cold,fever..?

I'm a Catholic Christian from Mangalore. Born and brought up there. Lived there for 25years of my life. I nor any one in my family or any of the fellow Catholics I know has faced any hate crime or discriminated against due to religion. In fact there are a few radical Christian sects who have recently started operations in the region, who are creating communal problems not only for non-Christians, but even for Catholic Christians, who have been living there in peace with other communities for many centuries. These new radical christian sects are mostly funded from foreign countries and they are run like multi-national companies. The more the members they get, the more the funds they can get.

Violence against Christians in Karnataka:

Karnataka – Four Hindu extremists on November 4 beat an independent pastor and filed “prostitution” charges against him near Karnataka state’s Gundelpet town. Dr. Sajan K. George, national president of the Global Council of Indian Christians, told Compass that the 50-year-old independent pastor, M. Thankaraj, received injuries on his head, right hand and chest. He was attacked at about 1 p.m. on Sunday in Hosalli Colony area while he had gone to see off a 33-year-old woman of his church, identified only as Thulasiamma, who had visited him for prayer and counseling. Thulasiamma was facing opposition from her family due to her conversion to Christianity, George said. The extremists held the pastor hostage till about 8 p.m., and then dragged him to the police station, where they filed the complaint against him for “prostitution.” Police readily registered the complaint against the pastor, but refused to file his complaint against the attackers, George added. The pastor was recovering in the Gundelpet Government Hospital, while police were investigating the allegations against him at press time.

Karnataka – Hindu extremists from the Bajrang Dal threatened independent pastor Vijay Kumar on October 18 in Chikkaningahalli, Hassan district, Karnataka. Hindu villagers approached five Christian families for a contribution for some temple festivities, said Kumar’s brother, Mohan Kumar. “The Christians refused to either contribute money or even participate in the Hindu festival, and this angered the Hindus,” Mohan Kumar told Compass. The local extremists groups accompanied by villagers waylaid Vijaya Kumar on his pastoral visit to the village on October 18 around 6 p.m., his brother said. “They threw Vijaya off his bicycle and caught him by the scruff of his collar, and angrily questioned him about the behavior of the Christians in the village,” he said. “The extremists accused Vijaya of forcibly converting them and warned him not to enter the village again, and they threatened to kill him if he refused to obey their orders to stay away.” Police refused to register any complaint by Pastor Kumar, but instead registered a complaint filed by villagers against the pastor for forcible conversion.

Karnataka – Hindu extremists attacked a Christian worker on October 15 in Karnataka state’s Shimoga district. Mani Kumar of Grace Baptist House Church, in Jay Pee Nagar in Shimoga’s Sagar area, had gone to visit his friend in S.N. Nagar, who was not home. Some youths approached him and asked him to come with them to a nearby village, Itheri, to preach Christianity, said Dr. Sajan K. George of the Global Council of Indian Christians. Since Mani regularly traveled to the area to share the gospel, local villagers knew him. When they reached the village, however, the youths called extremists of the Bajrang Dal, youth wing of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (World Hindu Council), who beat him up, accusing him of “forced conversions.” The 32-year-old Mani, who received injuries in his head, legs and arms, was rushed to a hospital for treatment. Police have registered a complaint against the attackers.

So what is the acceptable bevavior of the minority in these areas ? If christian folks offering material benefits than the boys in khakis should offer them same or better. Its free will vs free will. If material benefit is the deciding factor, so be it.
